View Full Version : Does anyone else not like the name Mamecab? (Or...What should I call my Mamecab?)

I don't really mind it too much, and I use the term all the time, but there's just something I don't like about the name "Mamecab" or even using MAME in conjunction with an arcade cabinet running MAME on it. Like just having MAME on the marquee or something. I think it's because if someone's comming into my basement and says "Hey cool, what game is that" I'd rather have a cool name to tell them. Does anyone feel this way too or am I the only one?:|
Anyways, I only say all this because I'm planning on designing a new marquee but am having a pretty bad case of creativity block for what to call the sucker. The thought process usually goes something like "Lets see here, it runs lots of arcade machines so maybe it should have that in the name, Multiple Arcade...Multiple Arcade Machine... ...Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, yeah that's it...wait...doh!"
Anyone here have any ideas?

How about "multicade"?
I've heard that plenty of times (usually for the commercial type MAME cabinets).

Yeah, I think Multicade is pretty good.
Any pics ? Maybe we'd be inspired.
Retrocab ?

Yeah, I've only heard that for the commercial ones. It does sound cooler than mamecab though.

Retrocab ?
Right now it looks like an old Space Fury cab that someone unfortunately gutted long ago and turned into a Ninja Gaiden cab.
A friend of mine suggested The Wayback Machine.

On one hand a marquee with a MAME logo on it accurately defines what it is, and that's nice but on the other hand it is a little drab, not to mention pretty unimaginative. I have three MAME machines, and I don't want them all called MAME, so I gave them names and designed new marquees-
The general MAME machine (19" monitor, three buttons) is called "Warp Zone" because that sounds like a general video game term, and it's snappier than MAME.

Another machine is a 25" six button cab that I mainly use for Capcom fighters, and I wanted it to look like some kind of official Capcom thing so I called it "Capcom Coin-op Classics Collection Cabinet" but that looked dumb on the marquee so I just called it Capcom Anthology.

And my vertical monitor cabinet (a 25" monitor in a blue 3KOAM Z-Back, real cool, man!) I use for shmups, I called "Danmaku". Danmaku is a name for the "bullet hell" genre of shooters that are so popular nowadays.

The problem with the word "MAME" is that your guests may not even know what that is. I agree, either give it a name that suggests that it plays more than one game (I've actually seen a million "Arcade Classics" machines) or something a bit more personal that reflects you or your game room.
The arcade I grew up hanging out in was "Cactus Jack's" and so when I put my MAME cabinet together using an already bastardized DK Jr cabinet, I thought "Cactus Flack's" was fitting. I've had several people dub my arcade the "Flackade" and one of these days I'm going to make a sign dubbing it as such.

That's pretty much where I'm comming from. Also, I think it's because seeing the MAME logo almost cheapens it in a way. I want how it works to seem almost magical, and as we all know, a magician never reveals his secrets.

I think something like this is what I'm going for. Something pretty general, yet cool looking/sounding at the same time. I think my main problem is that I have to choose just one thing and then be stuck with it (not that I couldn't change it later, but that's beside the point) Actually, I'm sure the main problem is that I'm more technically creative rather that artistically creative.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I'll look back though BYOAC for inspatration and I'll be sure to post pictures when things finally come to fruition.
