Found this sucker today. After picking it up, I though 'son of a... of all the games it could be, it had to be Pac Man', followed shortly by 'At least it isn't ET'.

Anyway, is this considered a Proto, or are loaners in their on category? I've played it and notice no difference from the release version.

I think this was just taped on w/ scotch tape. Should I remove that?

Oh yeah, and not being an avid 2600 collector, I might sell. How much/little is it worth?

That's a prototype. If it's the same as the release version, it would be a shame. I thought the earlier versions were colored more like the original arcade game and Atari had them make the colors different before release.

Guys on AA would know more about this stuff but I'd assume it would have to be dumped and the code compared to the release version.

YOU MUST DUMP IT AND GIVE IT TO EVERYONE FOR FREE

Sorry, obligatory proto thread post. :p

Also probably needs to be opened to verify that it's the real deal. Unfortunately these things are easy to fake.

I'm not home at the moment, but isn't the screw to open these under the label? Makes it kind of hard to open up without destroying it. I guess that's part of why they are easy to fake.

I thought the released version WAS the prototype. An early one.

Yeah there are hassles like that. I would post about it on AtariAge where you would get the real scoop.

In the meantime there's a picture of another PacMan proto at Tempest's site that you can compare it to:
