View Full Version : Do You Have More Than One Copy of The Same Game? Why?
The 1 2 P

With the upcoming release of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 on XBL and PSN I started to wonder how many people(who already have copies of it) will be purchasing it again in download form. Then I wondered about this more in a broader scope, such as how many of you have exact or near exact copies of the same game? And if you are one of the many in this catergory, "why" do you have more than one copy of the same game?
Below are some of my examples with visual aids. You don't need visual aids with your answers. I just did it because I was bored and because I'm a pic whore8-)
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1140a.jpg
I have three copies because this is a rare case where all three copies are either uncommon or somewhat rare(despite how many listings are on ebay)
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1142a.jpg
The PS2 version has more content but honestly I think I bought that version first. But the Gamecube version was on sale for $10 new.
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1144.jpg
Three slightly altered covers and three different special characters. Oh, and also three very different controller types.
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1145.jpg
This is one of the only examples of two current gen games I have and again it's because of extra content. The PS2 version has the Jedi Temple prologue level, something you have to download on the 360 and PS3 versions. They obviously left this out on purpose so they could make more money later.
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1146.jpg
I got my special editions of Halo 2 and Doom 3 first. Years later the regular versions were cheap enough that I could pick them up without having to think about it twice.
http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr306/THE-1-2-P/HPIM1148.jpg
Left to right was the order I got these in. I was going to sell the bare bones version once I picked up a sealed copy with the demo for MP2. But before I did that I ran into the Legend of Zelda:WW hybrid copy at Gamestop. I also found another variant at Goodwill a few months ago(the Kmart Wavebird version) but they wanted too much for it so I passed.
EDIT: I left out all my examples where I have both a US copy and import copy(mostly PS1) but I may post those later. Same thing for my Genesis and Snes games that I have one sealed copy(to collect) and one opened copy to play.

The only games I have multiple copy of are the 3 sealed NES games that I have. Loose copies were easy to get so I can enjoy the games without opening the sealed ones.

My bro has both copies of star wars but the game for 360 is different than the ps2 and he got the 360 later. I look at people's collection pics and i see people with 3 or 4 of the same game like 3 copies of sonic 2 Why

I've got quite a few different ports of the same games, as seen in my sig. I have Bubble Bobble for NES and GB. Strange how much better the GB one is.

I have a few dups of Atari 2600 games and I have the GC and Wii versions of Resident Evil 4.
Then I have two copies of New Super Mario Bros on DS, because I bought it once, then I got it again about a year later in the Mario DS bundle.
And if you want to count this too, I have some games (Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and a few others) that I have on the Wii Virtual Console and the SNES.
I don't really have a good reason for having duplicate games. Although the Atari games were from different bundles so it was out of my control.

i generally don't go out and intentionally buy multiple copies of the same game. however, i do have a few ports of the same game including Mortal kombats 1 and 2 for both the snes and genesis (mainly becaues the genesis i bought came with both kombats).
also have nba jam for snes and genesis as well as nba jam toury edition for snes and sega 32x (the 32X version has slightly better graphics)
also have ultimate mk3 for the snes as well as for xbla (only because xbla version has the online capabilities)
i have fatal fury motw for the DC and for xbla for same reason as above.... i will also be getting marvel vs capcom 2 on xbla for the online capabilities even thou i have the same game on the DC.
i think i might be forgetting a couple others but thats about it.

Sega Genesis MUSHA! I have a cheap loose copy with Bad Label to play and a complete MINT Copy in my collection. Thanks BUYATARI for the players copy. Mike : )

I think my answer would be rather obvious.
But for the hell of it:
1. Greatest Hits
2. Collectors Edition
3. Pre-Order Bonus Version
4. Typo Variant
5. Bundle Variant
6. Disc Art Variant
7. Updated Disc Variant (See: Eidos Demo Fiasco)
8. 3 different types of long boxes
9. Jewel Case variant of Long Box release
10. ESRB variant
11. Content Variant (Actual Demo changes)
12. #%^%@! Custom Made Prize Variants...
13. Autographed copies...
Figure what, 8 Alundras, 5 PSones, 5 Lunars, 3 Lunar 2s, etc etc...
I bought 3 PSN PSX games (FF7, SFA, Tekken 2) for research purposes, since SFA turned out to be oddly compressed improperly ratio sized. Tekken 2 was fine, and on.

I at one point resolved that if I ever ended up buying more than one copy of a game, it would be time to stop buying games and spend my time working through my backlog. Of course that didn't happen.
I only get a second copy of a game when it's part of a bundle with other games that I don't have or when I think I ought to be able to trade it away for something else fairly easily. The former doesn't happen too often; most recently it was with the GTA Trilogy sale on Steam, when I had already bought Vice City for $5 elsewhere. (Ironically, that wasn't at all too difficult to get moving.) As for the latter, I am consistently mistaken about the ease of trading. :( (Why the frak is it so difficult to get rid of this spare copy of Apollo Justice!?)

I also have MvC2 for both Dreamcast and PS2, I didn't know the PS2 version was so bad when I 1st got it and decided to track down the [almost] arcade perfect Dreamcast version. It doesn't really matter that much now that it's coming to PSN/XBLN.
I also have 2x copies of Kof95 MVS and and 2x Kof97 MVS simply because I bought them loose when started collecting MVS and then got a pack including every single MVS kof at the NG.com forums.
Speaking of kof, I have all MVS kofs and Kof94 Rebout (PS2), Kof Orochi Saga (PS2) and Kof Nests saga (PS2), plus Kof99 Dream match never ends (basically Kof98 for the Dreamcast) and Kof98UM.
I have JP and US copies of Bloody Roar for the PS1 simply because i totally forgot I already had one when purchased the JP version.
I own JP and US versions of KofXI and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum for the PS2 (similar reasons as to why I have 2 copies of MvC2, got US versions 1st then realized JP versions are better due to progressive scan support and no slowdown)
Don't know if this one counts, but I have SFIV on PS3 and PC (Steam version) just because I wanted to have both networks available for online play.
I have Gokujou Parodius Deluxe for both the PS1 and Saturn, no particular reason.
I got 2 copies of longbox Tekken 1 for PS1.
Also Super SFII for the Genesis and Saturn (SFII collection).
SSFII on Saturn (SF2 collection) and HD Remix for PSN too.
Not sure if this counts, but I have DOA2 on PS2 and DOA2 Ultimate on XBOX.
Fatal Fury Special for the PC Engine and Fatal Fury Battle Archives for the PS2 (includes FFS).
World Heroes Perfect (MVS) and World Heroes Anthology for the PS2.
I have JP & US copies of Battle Arena Toshinden 2, got the JP version later on simply because I like the cover and artwork on the manual.
Also have JP version of RE Code Veronica for the Dreamcast and Code Veronica for the PS2.
And finally, I have 2 copies of Mortal Kombat for the Sega CD.
EDIT: added a bunch of games I was forgetting about.

If we are including compilations, I'm pretty bad with Sonic games then. I probably own at least 3 copies of the first few Sonic games. I pretty much bought anything with Sonic because of my fan level at the time. I'm guessing though we aren't going by compilations though, so I'll stick to what I do have.
I think I may own both the SEGA CD and Genesis version of NBA Jam TE. In my game list I wrote down I had regular NBA Jam for SEGA CD, but for some reason I think I have both. Probably had to do something with buying Genesis consoles in lots.
I know that there are two copies of Destroy All Humans in my house. One of my brothers owns the PS2 version and the other owns the Xbox version. My Older brother took his PS2 to college and for some reason bought the game there.
As far as ports go, I own Sonic Adventure DX for GCN and PC as well as Metroid for NES and VC. Sonic Adventure I bought for GCN just because I never owned a Dreamcast while the PC version was purchased solely for the customizable skins and this one hack that never got completed. Metroid I purchased on the VC for my dad, only to find it cheaply at a flea market for the NES a year later.
My younger brother and I both own are own copies of Animal Crossing, which occurred because he wanted to use Action Replay on it and I wouldn't let him. He ended up buying his own DS to use it on too.
The only game I literally own two copies of is DBZ Legacy of Goku. I purchased my own copy of the game and later my mother found a loose copy lying around her classroom. I forget why she never returned it to her students, but it may have been after school had let out for summer or something. Never got around to trading in my extra copy of it and probably never will.

I seriously used to own 6 copes of SMB/DH before I had a garage sale and tried to get rid of the extra copies, which failed lol.
Back on topic, I own two copies of Castlevania: SOTN, which are the Greatest Hits copy and the Black Label Copy.

I have a lot of games separately that I also have in compilations. In general I prefer to play the originals, and I prefer to play separate games rather than compilations (I just do). But I'll buy a compilation for a particular game or games on it, and disregard the ones that I have on other systems. For example, I have Sonic Gems Collection, but I pretty much just pretend it's Sonic the Fighters for Gamecube. When I want to play Sonic CD I do so on my Sega CD, and when I want to play Sonic R (which is more rare), I do so on my Saturn. If there were some way to buy just Sonic the Fighters (short of buying the arcade version), I wouldn't have bothered with Gems Collection at all.
Other than that, I don't own any outright duplicates, but I do own multiple versions of a few games. I bought Blackthorne for SNES before I had a 32x, and then I got the 32x version later, because it's superior. I just haven't gotten around to getting rid of the SNES one, because it's not like it's worth a lot of money or anything. Similarly, I bought the Sega CD version of Flashback to see how it compared, and decided I preferred the cartridge version, but the CD version is still sitting on my shelf, because I just haven't bothered. In general I prefer to get the best possible version of every multiplatform game, but occasionally this isn't possible until later. I have Puzzle Fighter for Saturn, because I happened upon it for cheap; the one I really want is the Dreamcast version, but it can be a bit pricey. The Saturn version will do for now, and it kind of has the unintended effect of moving Puzzle Fighter for Dreamcast way to the bottom of my want list. When I do eventually get it, I'm not going to immediately throw out my Saturn copy.

In terms of stand-alone single released games, I have two games I have two copies of.
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec & Auto Modellista, both PS2.
I have a domestic copy and an NTSC-J for each respectively. The reason is beneficial either way.
Auto Modellista - Got the import for free and had always wanted to see how the original compared to the NTSC-U/C release. In short, the import is far better and it makes me wonder, why was the handling changed.
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - Got the import for $5 and figured it's worth a shot to try out the import exclusive (unless you have GameShark/AR) Diablo GT race car, results pending.

I have 3 copies of Gears of War 2. One Collector's Edition, one that I bought brand new, and one that I bought used. The reason? I play it too much and the discs get wrecked :D
I also have 3 versions of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3. NES, SNES (in Super Mario: All-Stars), and then Gameboy Advance.

I have the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox versions of the game Roadkill. I loved the GC version so much I ended up buying the other two when I found them on sale. I've played through them several times.
I picked up Smuggler's Run: Warzones on the GameCube, and I liked it so much I wanted some other Smuggler's Run titles, so I bought a PS2 copy that had a different name. And it turned out to be the exact same game, just different names for different consoles. That pissed me off for a good while.
I've got a few games from the olden days that were ported to different Atari consoles, like Ballblazer, Dark Chambers, Desert Falcon, and Basketbrawl. I enjoyed seeing how each game performed on each console.

Doom - PC (id Anthology box set), 32X, PSOne (long box), Jaguar
Duke Nukem 3D - 2 for PC (original and Atomic Edition), Saturn, PSOne, N64
Castlevania Symphony of the Night - 2 for PSOne (original U.S. black label and Japanese Best Series), Saturn
Puggsy - Genesis, Sega CD
Resident Evil 4 - Gamecube Special Edition, PS2
Resident Evil 2 - PSOne greatest hits, N64
Sonic 2 - Japanese & U.S.
Doom 3 - X Box (Collectors Edition) & PC
Yars' Revenge - 2 copies (one is factory sealed)
Mortal Kombat - Genesis, Sega CD
Most of them is because I collect the different ports and versions across the systems for some games or like for Yars' Revenge one is sealed so I got a cart only copy to play.

I have several dupes of Atari commons but as others have stated, that usually happens when you buy bundles or lots for one or a few things only to get a pacman, combat or space invaders in every lot.
Having said that I have pacman, ms pacman, jr. pacman for the 2600, Ms pacman for the 7800, pacman and ms pacman for the 8-bit atari computers and pacman and mspacman for the NES and mspacman for the genesis.
I could make similar statements for games like Donkey Kong, defender, and some others. Its because I enjoy the games themselves and although each version on each console is similar, they aren't exactly the same. For example the MS Pacman on Genesis has different gameplay modes that aren't on other versions.
I don't know about modern games so is it the same? Is soul caliber 2 the same on gamecube, xbox and ps2? Are there differences aside from possible graphical differences?

I have multiple copies of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, King of Fighters 2002/2003, the Art of Fighting Anthology, and both Fatal Fury Battle Archives, because at the Pamida here in Ashland and Park Falls, they're selling them from anywhere from $4.99 to $9.99 BRAND NEW. Sometimes it just pays to be a generation behind, and Fire Pro is great. I have a 360, but I still play the ol' PS2 and old Xbox too.

Below are some of my examples with visual aids. You don't need visual aids with your answers. I just did it because I was bored and because I'm a pic whore8-) You and me both. :)
The majority of my dupes are Resident Evil games:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/alxbly/new/DSCF2789.jpg
I got the original Resident Evil on Playstation, then Directors Cut, and of course, RE: Deadly Silence is essentially the same game but for DS (although with a few extras). I got REmake when it first came out on Gamecube and picked up RE Archives just this week. Cheapest port ever, because there's no additions... hell, it doesn't even have widescreen support!
RE2 I first played on Gamecube, but was intruiged to see what the original version was like so I also got it for Playstation. Then I wanted to see what the N64 version was like, as it's held up as one of the best technical achievements on the N64. It's obvious they put a lot of effort into the port but those cut scenes are heavily compressed and just don't look very good.
Code Veronica I had only played on Dreamcast so I wanted to see what Code Veronica X was like. RE4 I owned on Gamecube first and was tempted by the extra content of the Ps2 version. However, since the Wii version has all of that, the PS2 version doesn't seem so tempting now.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/alxbly/new/DSCF2791.jpg
I really enjoyed Shadow Man when I first played it on the N64, so I eventually ended up getting the, visually much sharper, Dreamcast version. I seen the Playstation version in really good conditon so I just picked that up as well.
GTA III - I never played this on the PS2 when it first came out, but I was blown away when I played it on Xbox. The PS2 version is something I seen just recently in excellent condition and very cheap, so I decided to get it.
NFS Hot Pursuit I first played on Gamecube... I enjoyed it despite its obvious faults (and because at that time the Gamecube was my only console and there's weren't many motor racing games available for it). When I got a PS2 I was curious to see what the superior version of the game was like.
Dead Rising... I loved the 360 game. It was really THE game that made having a "next gen" console worthwhile at the time. So, I was curious about the Wii version, despite the bad rep it was getting. It's true there's less zombies on screen but there are other changes that make this less obvious (open areas are reduced in size) and there are new enemies and a much better targeting system. I enjoyed playing through both versions of the game.
I've never gotten around to selling the standard version of Morrowind, but I might just keep it since the artwork is different. That sounds silly, I guess. I've owned the original Ninja Gaiden (on Xbox) then traded it in for Ninja Gaiden Black. Now that I've got Sigma I'll probably sell Ninja Gaiden Black (stupid Classics/Greatest Hits cover means I don't have much love for that one).

I've got several different versions of the same game mainly for the sake of completion, and because Sega had a nasty habit of re-releasing the same games on all their consoles... so I have many of the same games on Game Gear, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast... but also because I enjoy the novelty of Wii motion controls, so I'm beginning to get quite a few Wii games that I already own for the PC, just to have the different control scheme... another reason is because the Wii versions of multiplatform games are often graphically different from their counterparts, due to the Wii's lower graphics capabilities, and I'm growing rather fond of the Wii's unique style in those cases... but otherwise there's no reason for it... the only other reasons for my duplicates are because the games are the same in name only across multiple systems... that happened quite a bit between the Genesis and the SNES, so in those cases I got both versions... but as a general rule, when games are available on multiple platforms, I just choose one version to buy... unless there's a portable version too, in which case I'll also get the portable version of it, if I like the game enough to take it along with me sometimes

The only game I can think of that I have more than one copy of is Sonic Blast for the Game Gear. One of them is actually still sealed haha. For the life of me, I cannot remember why I have two copies, the copy that's opened (I just have the cart now) works just fine. Probably a two-people-same-gift mishap.

I have multiple copies of certain games...
Donkey Kong:
One for me, one for my brother, who now doesnt want it. Ones players choice though, so meh...
Super Star Wars:
I bought another copy on eBay for a dollar (was it from a fellow DPer? I don't recall) That way I would not have to use my near mint (and once sealed) players choice copy *kicks self*
Sonic 2:
I needed the box, and the game happened to be in it...However, I now have an NFR copy, and a normal copy, without the box still.
Pokemon Pinball:
Three copies >_> one for each of us kids :P but they eventually found their way back to me.
Finding Nemo:
Different systems, but got one at a lot...
Oracle of Seasons:
lost one...then found it!
EDIT - Ironically i just remembered i also have two copies of Sonic 2 on the Game Gear. Haha

My reason for buying various ports of same games to different systems even when they play the same is the controller alone, and just for the ability to play the game on a different system for the heck of it. It also gave me motivation to play through certain games more than once. Examples of what I have that I actually do care about are Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II, X-Men Legends, X-Men Legends II, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Sonic Mega Collection.
There is something about that hack & slash gameplay that makes it really addicitve. Hand me any hack & slash game and I'll be glued to it till it's done.

ff4 (j) x10 1 "easy type" 9 common version and 1 "rare" 1.0 version

I have different reasons for different games. It's either because I got several lots of games that had games I already had, or I came across a copy for a very cheap price or it was part of a very good trade, or so I could have a portable version of a previous console game(like Earthworm Jim for GBA when I have the Genesis version), or to have different variants of the same game if they had different packaging or if they played slightly differently(I'm hoping to someday get complete copies of Loom, both the floppy disk and CD-ROM versions because they play differently).

I have Final Doom for both PC and PS1. I like tha in case I need my Doom fix, I can play it in my room. I wish I had a X-Box and Doom 3 for it since my computer is annoying to play it on PC.
I have Mario 3 on both GBA and NES as well.
And I have a Sonic game with 1, 2, and Mean Bean Machine and I own Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2. I don't count Sonic 2 on Game Gear as the same game, since it so different.

Well, I have a copy of Super Mario Bros. that I won in an auction on shopgoodwill for my current NES, and I have Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt from my old NES, does that count?

You and me both.
I appreciated your pics. Thank you:)
It also gave me motivation to play through certain games more than once.
That was my reasoning behind getting the Japanese import versions of 70% of my US PS1 collection. It gave me another reason to play thru Syphon Filter, Castlevania: SOTN, Bust-A-Groove, Smackdown and so many of my other favorite PS1 games. So I ended up with two copies(different regions) of the same game but I enjoyed each playthru just as much.

I have 2 copies of Mario Superstar Baseball. I got it when it first came out. I misplaced it about a year ago and I really liked it so I bought another. I eventually found the other one.
I have MVP Baseball on GameCube and PC. Got the PC version about 2 years ago for the mods.
I never owned them at once, but I had all 3 versions of the first Lego Star Wars game. I got the PS2 version when it first came out but traded it in later. I got the Xbox version 2 years later but the sound is horrendous on the 360 so I returned it and bought it new on Gamecube.
I also owned 3 copies of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Got one at TRU for a $15 coupon, then Target had it on sale, and then Amazon had it on sale and there was an addtional $5 off code so I got it for $29.
I have Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles on Genesis and the Mega Collection on GC. I actually won a Genesis lot that has Sonic 2 and 3 so I will have another copies of those (my Sonic 3 label is messed up. I don't know what it is).
I have Pokemon Snap on VC and for N64 (gave it away on N64 but bought it again last week). I also have Donkey Kong Country for VC and SNES, too.

As the OP's question relates my most current Digital Press Blog Entry (http://digitpress.com/blogs/pantechnicon/), I'm just making a plug to go read what I wrote there.
The short version for the twittilliterati is this: I keep more than one copy of a game if there is significant aesthetic variation between two copies.

I'll usually only end up with multiple copies of a game by accident. Although if something is cheap I'll pick it up as tradebait.
The only exception for this is Puzzle Quest. I've got like 4 or 5 versions of it for different platforms. I don't know why. :)

My only duplicates right now are the Splinter Cell games. I have them for Gamecube and Xbox mainly because the Cube ports have enhanced gameplay and the Live levels included.

If you count the many different versions of Pokemon as the same game, then I have multiple copies of like 5 or 6 games! (Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, FireRed/LeafGreen, etc.)
But seriously speaking, I have 2 copies of some SNES games because I end up getting the Japanese versions as well, just to have them and so my collection will look more complete (and so I can swap the game cases and play the English versions on a Super Famicom! ROFL)

I wish I knew why it was proving to be so freaking impossible to get rid of my extra copies of Apollo Justice and Tetris DS! I hope I've finally learned my lesson now about getting things like this for trading purposes.

I've had two copies of a number of uncommon to rare imports, easy enough to do when you're looking for quality. Right now I have (for example) three copies of Sin & Punishment and two copies of Rendering Ranger...but no Psychic Killer Taromaru LOL
I also have two copies of Getsu Fuuma Den for Famicom, at least I think I do. The new one is in much nicer shape.
Genpei Touma Den for X68000 I have twice over, and one copy has a traditional banner thing and poles. Pretty nifty extra.
It really gets crazy when you have multiples of consoles...which I do, especially Genesis / Mega Drives.

I have two copies of Populous on SNES, because I needed the manual for it and I was hoping to be as into the game as it was more worth buying the game CIB for 9 on ebay, rather than 4 on ebay for just the manual. I was probably jipped though.
I have a few games on both SNES and Genesis (Addams Family, Pac Man 2, Out of This World)
I have multiple copies of Pokemon Pinball because my brothers are overpossessive of theirs so we keep buying more (good thing they were only like 2 apiece at gamestop.)
Theres a couple games we have on both PS2 and GameCube. I also have 3 copies of Sonic 2 on both the game gear and genesis, because cheap prices are tormentuous

The only game that I have exactly two copies of is Shadow Hearts 1 for the PS2. I got the second copy since it was a preorder bonus for Shadow Hearts 2.
I do have games that are "director's cut" versions of the original. For example, I have:
Devil may cry 3
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure: DX
Valkyrie Profile

The only interesting thing that I have 2 of is Suikoden and Dudes With Attitude. I found my original, loose copy of Suikoden at my local flea market for a whole dollar. I played it a bit and loved the game. Fast forward 3 months when I happily picked up a mint and complete Suikoden for $3 :) at the same flea market. I also mentioned Dudes With Attitude. I originally picked up a beat up copy at the local game store, Special FX, for $4.99 when I first started collecting. Just a few months ago I found the second copy of Dudes With Attitude for $4.99 at the same store. Mostly bought the second copy of that game because it's in beautiful mint condition.

I have doubles of a few NES games. The reason is, because my old copies of them were kind of beat up and I wanted to replace them with copies that were in better condition. However, I could not bring myself to sell my old copies or give them away...because they are the copies I've had since I was a little kid (lots of sentimental value). So I just put them in the boxes, and put the newer copies out on the shelves with the rest of my NES games.

My bro has both copies of star wars but the game for 360 is different than the ps2 and he got the 360 later. I look at people's collection pics and i see people with 3 or 4 of the same game like 3 copies of sonic 2 Why
Packaging variants? That's why I have four copies of Sonic 2.
