John Madden Genesis box variant

Yes I know......why post something about one of the cheapest most common games for any system. Well, in my years of Genesis collecting I've never seen this kind of box for this game and was wondering if any other Genesis collectors ever came across one.

It's not the normal paper box that I always see. It's an EA branded (it has the old cube, sphere, triangle logo above the cartridge slot) plastic clam shell case. The cover art is an over sized version of the manual cover:

Store promo item perhaps?

I've never seen that box before either. Since it has no barcode, and descriptions for other games, it most likely is a store display box.

I don't have it anymore but a long time ago Electronic Arts had a deal where you could buy either 2 or 3 games (can't remember which) and could send away for a free game from a small list of games and wouldn't you know it the game I sent away for was John Madden Football, I bet that's what this is (the box art from the free mail away copy of John Madden Football).

Edit - It probably is some sort of display box art actually but if it's not my guess is it I say :D
