Anyone watch the live streaming of it? I caught a glimpse when I got back from my friend's house. I tuned in and I saw a Guile v Guile mirror; I guess one of them was like one of the best Guile users in the world. He sure did look like it.
I just heard about Gootecks gettin beat, Filapino Champ doing something cocky, and Sagats getting embarrassed. That's from the GameFaQs SFIV message board, so I don't know if this is legit or not.
Also, I did see a Cammy player beat an E. Honda. He crowded the shit out of him; it was awesome to see.

Yeah, I heard that they got 1040 registrations for SF4. Insane!
I also hear they had a new build of Tatsunoko vs Capcom's US release, I'm interested in any changes on the floor.

I was going to watch it but assumed someone would record it and it'd be on Youtube within a week so didn't.

Gootecks lost to Alex Valle, not sure what is so surprising about that. I'll be shocked if Alex is not top 5 this year.
I think too many people see blogs by Gootecks and then all of a sudden it's "shocking" when he loses...since the game came out on console, I don't think there's any reason to be jocking him like people do all the time....he's a good player, but there are a lot of better ones....

To be honest I had no idea who gootecks was, or why anyone would expect him to be awesome. Valle seems to be pretty fired up in his interviews before the tourney though, I would not be all that surprised if he won it.
I'm interested in how the HDR tourney goes today; I loved how all the big ST players ragged on it, and then were surprised when it got a crapton of entrants as well..possibly more than ST's gotten at evo anytime recently? I'm wondering if the tweaks will change up the top echelon of characters in the tourney. I expect to see Balrog, Dhalsim, and Vega up there once more, but if anyone else gets up there that would be pretty awesome.

Gootecks has a Twitter blog (for quite some time) and basically markets himself out, which is smart, but when only three areas in the US had SF4, it's not that difficult to be "one of the best" that early on. It's keeping up with it as the game progresses. He is solid, but in this day and age (the last SF game that people played that came out, CVS2, was not during the You Tube internet must copy video phase like everyone is doing now) everyone believes "hype" more than anything as the name.
HDR is not a "bad" game, but it did not need to be rebalanced, so it's kind of silly. It's being played because it's readily available on next gen systems, and there is no definitive "good" version of ST out there that people can agree on.
When you have 1100 people entered, it's obvious HDR is going to get a lot of carryovers from SF4.
I really should have gone to EVO this year, but the money was catching up to me from this arcade. I had a bye into Winner's Semifinals (SF4 Top 64 Winners) from the GameStop National Championships but even if I mooched off 3 people for hotel and food, it was still $350 for me to go this year with a trip to Miami next week. Car rental rates are OUTRAGEOUS right now on top of all that. Man. What a time to live in this economy.
I don't know if Valle is going to win, (beating Daigo might be a stretch) but he's got the talent and has been powering up. Everyone talked shit in SoCal about how he was slacking off because he wasn't winning arcade tournaments, but arcade tournaments for the game (now that console characters are out) killed the game effectively.

Eh, I was just stating what I heard.
Although I'm surprised you didn't head over there, your reasons are understandable. There's a lot of money involved with a trip like that. But it would have been awesome watchin you play.
Anyway, I won't be able to see much of what's going on today since I work. Must be awesome to be over there at Evo though.

I was thinking about showing up, but I didn't want to embarrass any of the top players.
Maybe next year

I actually don't think there was a problem with ST being rebalanced. Kind of weird that this is what, the 7th revision of SF2, but I think it addressed some of the very real issues that ST had. Not that ST is bad by any stretch, but crap like Vega's walldive, O. Sagat's fireball spam, all the throw loops, weird motions and random input windows made getting into the game tough for newcomers, and the far and away shittiness of half the cast against the top characters - and their shittiness vs. Akuma - are grounds enough to revise the game. I don't agree with all the changes, but I think overall it's the better game.
And don't get me started on the single player of ST :P But as you pointed out, there was no real console standard, and now there is. A readily available one too, as opposed to an obscure japanese dreamcast port or a crappy PS2 one on a compilation!
I've barely been putting any time into the recent fighters...my heyday of free time to do so seems to have been back when Capcom wasn't putting anything new out past CvS2, which I got bored of. I have decent fundamentals, but I have to put more time into them to actually get the nitty-gritty game specific stuff down.
So DreamTR, when am I actually going to catch you on Live to run some SF?

Ubersaurus, I'm on SF4 every other day in the evenings mostly...make sure Dream Theater is added to your friends' list!
Nirvana: Since I opened a business, it's been gobbling up my time, and wallet....I really never knew that getting married and opening a business would take up THAT much of my time, but traveling for tournaments is now out of the question it seems....oh well....to be in my 20s again!
The thing I am pissed about most my not going is that almost ALL of my friends from California/Arizona are there.

Ah. That's definitely understandable, but at least you're moving on in life. That's always a plus ^_^ But I was just going to mention that actually; I figured you knew at least half the people there.
BTW, gg, DreamTR. We finally had a rematch, and it could have gone either way. It wasn't a flashy win, but I wasn't given a lot of combo opportunities. God, I hate facing Honda >_>

I was hoping for a 2009 sequel to EVO: Search for Eden. Thanks for disappointing me!
PS My Dan is pretty decent.

Anyone have some more info on how the HDR matches are going? Everybody's going gaga over SFIV (which I can't blame them for) but I can't find jackshit on how the HDR matches are going.
Favorite moment of the stream so far is that Gen player. Gee-zus christ.

Dunno much about Soul Cal, but this Hilde guy getting ran by a French Ivy in the finals was pretty fantastic to see.

You know, DreamTR, with all the improvements in netplay quality, you'd think that they'd think of organizing an online-only tournament for those of you who can't attend the actual event...

Daigo takes home another Championship. Justin Wong came out with the surprise Balrog pick though and gave Daigo a run for his money. Hell of a match.
It was awesome seeing Sanford pull out Cammy earlier in the losers bracket and totally dominate the Ryu though :) That's what inexperience with console characters does I guess.
Also, for any Sakura players out there, you should enjoy this:

Sabre totally confused the hell out of him. I'm surprised he didn't try jumping after any of those resets.

For like the pass five years I've been trying to find affordable(as in not $40-60 each) official dvds for the Evo events. Ever since I've watched highlights from some of the finals on the free Gamepro disc I've been hooked. I like watching stuff like this but those dvds never seem to be available for a reasonable($10 or less) price:(

Well this year there isn't a DVD, everything's going to be up on IGN Insider.

Doesn't he always? From what I know, he only plays Capcom style fighters so he better be good at them.

Not as such, he doesn't generally sweep the EVO tourneys. I don't remember if he went last year, but John Choi won SF2 and CvS2. He didn't win any of the tourneys in 06, either.

Yeah, they're starting to delete EVO vids (or ones off the stream at least), mostly cause of the IGN deal and the upcoming DVD.
