I was just "reliably" informed by a friend that Microsoft bought out Sega and then sold the rights to Sonic to Nintendo some years ago. They were adamant this was true, despite my trying to correct them. Unfortunately this resulted in me exploding in gamers rage and had a rather long rant at them and eventually proved they were wrong. ^^;

Anything like this happened to any of you guys?

My friend does that. He says that Nintendo is owned by Sony and Sony's owned by Microsoft. ANd I don't believe it, because last 4th of July, he made bomb fireworks out of Works toilet bowl cleaner and other things. Yeah, he's that dumb.LOL

The only one I believe is that Nintendo might have a say in Sony's decisions because of the SNES CD deals and the fact that PSX was going to have a SFC cart slot once.

Back in the early 90's I was told "Sega and Nintendo are owned by the same Japanese company" which was to explain how they could legally insult each other in commercials.

I was told that if you leave your n64 turned on for too long, it will start on fire (literally)

I was told by one of my brother's dumb friends (my brother himself is borderline failing) that thought he was the know it all of everything, that there was a Halo coming out for the Wii. No matter how many times I insisted that was never going to happen, he stuck to his word, so I eventually ignored him.

I remember some kid telling me that a device that allowed you to play Game Boy games on your Nintendo 64 does exist (This was long before Pokémon Stadium, and the Transfer Pak, came out), which he claimed was called "Super Game Boy 64".

Being the Nintendo fanboy I was at the time, it led into a debate over it's existance; ending with me pointing out it's not shown on Nintendo's official website or mentioned in Nintendo Power, so therefore, it doesn't exist.

There was an unlicensed GB player called Game Booster released around 1998. I remember my dad getting one in, and the thing let out satanic messages while we tried it with Metroid II.

I remember a game store clerk telling me he owned Final Fantasy II for NES which was released for a week, then recalled.

Maybe he'd heard about the Wide Boy? (http://www.disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/wideboy64.html)

I've heard so many of these things throught the years, I've lost track. My wife thinks I'm kind of weird because I let people tell me stuff I know is complete bullshit and I don't call them on it. I just like to hear what kind of crazy stories people believe (or expect other people to believe.)

Blowing on a cartridge helps get the dust out so your NES games will work. Honest.

We used to sell those pieces of crap at Funcoland.

They're not licensed and they don't play the GB audio, but they totally exist.

There were also official ones created by Nintendo for game development, testing, shows, and to give to reviewers for taking video and screenshots of games. It was called the Wide-Boy 64.

So your friend was the one that was correct.

Edit - Missed someone else already mentioning it.

Maybe he meant Lego Rock Band... It's a hype synergistic hybrid of Frankenstein's monster and Voltron. About the same as Mario Guitar Hero would be. ;)

I believe you could plug a regular GBA cart into it as well.

A few weeks ago in a chat room some dumb ass was trying to convince me that Sony owns the Final Fantasy series and thats why they got the majority of the FF games during the last two gens. I then asked him why Sony would let a FF game be released on a competing system(360) and he just left the chat after realizing that ignorance only gets you so farLOL

A guy at a local gamestore keeps trying to sell me on the 360 claiming it's the most reliable system of all time spouting sales numbers to justify it as fact. I dont bother arguing it as I'm normaly too busy trying to breath thru the laughter. As he's sent his back 6x already I figure he's smoking something I want nothing to do with.

I used to have the Game Booster. Sucks that it didn't play sound but it was reliable when my game boy died and I had no extra batteries on me.

When I was in fourth/fifth grade, there was this kid in my class who came from the UK and used to convince me all school year that the UK is the most amazing videogame haven ever and the 64DD was released there and Mario Paint 64 came out there and you could edit tracks in Mario Kart 64 and create characters in Goldeneye and all sorts of other crazy bullshit.

Yeah, I fell for it all. But then later on he kept saying I should "lend" my N64 to him so he can attach an extra 64DD he had to it and give it back to me. It was there my bullshit meter started to kick back in gear.

I was recently told that Microsoft bought the rights to the "God of War" series, and "God of War 3" would be an XBox 360 exclusive... lol

I'm going "Classic Gaming" for this one.

A kid in 6th grade told me that the Game Genie would allow you to create your own weapons in SMB3. He himself had created a boomerang weapon for mario to use.

The greatest story I have ever been told

Gamecube/PS2/XBOX games should all work on all the other systems because they all pretty much run on DOS.

A friend of mine told me "Nintendo never makes a bad game." That's so far from the truth it's not even funny.

When Final Fantasy started actually getting big in the US, I've actually heard someone say FF7 was the first game in the series. I don't know exactly how it was worded, but yeah. Person could have meant that it was the first one released here, but then he'd have still been wrong.

I was told in late 2002 if you managed to capture the "Code Red Worm" on a device like a jump drive you could then infect a Gameboy cart or PS1/PS2 memory card. The result would be unlocking hidden things such as weapons, new pokemon, etc. I remember thinking the guy who told me this looked like Lt. Dan (from Forest Gump around the New Year's party scene).

One time when I was working at Funco a kid called on the phone and asked how much Sonic for Game Boy was worth.

This was years before Sega went defunct as a console developer, and we typically got all kinds of misinformed questions from soccer moms and Nascar dads about 1st party titles on the wrong system, so I was pretty used to it.

My response was "There is no Sonic on Game Boy, so, zero dollars."

When the kid insisted that he had Sonic the Hedgehog on Game Boy I told him that if he brought it down I'd buy it from him.

A few hours later the kid showed up. With a HK bootleg version of Sonic for Gameboy. Similar to the HK original Famicom version it was a full sonic game developed from the ground up for GB.

This was the first time I'd been exposed to an "HK Original" and I gave him some reasonable store credit for it and apologized for doubting him.

Found a video of the actual game on YouTube.

The audio from that link made my ears bleed.

I do love the video game tall tales. I remember when kids/parents would come into the store and argue with me that Sonic was indeed on Nintendo or Sony long before Sega left the hardware business.

I'll go even more "classic gaming" for my story: A kid once told me that the upcoming release of Atari 2600 Defender was going to be exactly like the arcade since it was going to have an extra chip in the cartridge and was going to cost $100.00. I argued with the kid for a while since even at that time I knew that the difference between an arcade machine and home game console was more than just having one extra chip in the cart.

Remember that awful April Fools joke about Sonic being in Super Smash Bros Melee?

Yeah, all of my friends were trying to convince me that he was, when at the time it was obvious a third party wouldn't let Nintendo have their star character.

Yeah I have some Nintendo-era stuff as well.

I remember the day my brother came home from grade school with the latest Nintendo code written on paper. Apparently his friend Jeff told him that there was a stage select code for the Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers game, and he even wrote it out for my brother! We tried the thing for a few rounds, and after a bit we realized it was fake. This same dude was always telling my brother about crazy shit, such as owning a machine to make his own legos at the house and so forth.

I used to have a friend who was the same way. One time he told me about owning a fat book of NES/SNES codes and cheats, including some really cool tricks for Super Mario World, such as being able to destroy Bowser in one hit, with a special fireball, and an invincibility code. Of course this book was always "in Mass. at his dad's house" and he lived with his mother during the school year in Pennsylvania. I always figured he was bullshitting, but who knows, maybe it was Game Genie or something he was talking about. I also remember him telling me about some stages in Mega Man 4 or 5, I cannot remember which, before it actually came out. The funny thing is, his description of the levels (they were later levels, not the robot masters) were pretty accurate to the game, but he probably gave generic descriptions to begin with.

I don't remember any game specific stuff, but there was a friend of mine who had crazy stories like that. He said he had a complete NES collection including every game(I think either complete or factory sealed) but sold it off to some collector, I really can't remember the specifics as it was years ago. This same person always had crazy stories, like he was actually half cat and had full contact lenses to change the way his eyes looked, and always wore jeans to hide his tail. He was always serious with everything he said, he never admitted anything was a joke unless you cornered him about it and there wasn't any other way out(even then he later went back on stuff and insisted it was true). Plus his stories about his computer systems were BS too, like he had top of the line CIA super computer quality type stuff.

I knew a few kids like that growing up. Not specifically the half-cat stuff, but people who habitually lie just to lie. Last I heard the main one I knew was serving a relatively long stretch in prison for armed robbery, and the other one's done some time here and there for committing petty crimes.

What you eventually learn is that kids who lie to that extent usually do so because their home lives are terrible enough that they have to construct these sort of fantasy worlds where they're involved in all of these amazing things. I don't know if it's a prerequisite that they actually believe their own lies, but I think the reasoning is more that they just want to wow and impress the other kids without having to deal with reality.

Back onto the main topic, I don't really know any bullshitters anymore so I don't hear anything like this, but when I was younger the biggest source of rumors by far was the first two Mortal Kombat games, and that whole era when they were sort of at their peak. Hopefully anyone who grew up around 92-94 can back me up on this. You'd always hear about all manner of hidden characters, hidden levels, hidden sequences like a nude code or some sort of secret fatality.

The worst part was that you had to give just about all these claims at least the benefit of the doubt, because of whatever actual hidden things you had seen up to that point. Therefore anything was fair game, and just about anything seemed plausible.

My friend once told me Final Fanasty was a good series. lol

...all kidding aside. when I was younger, I was at my friends house and his big brother was absolutely avide that N64 games where all going to cost $100 dollars or more and just how much better the play station still was. this was just a little bit before the n64 came out, and i think he was pissed just cause his parents said they weren't going to get him one.

These are Gamestop related. Before I got Xbox live back in 2005 I asked a GS clerk if I could still run it if my internet was on a laptop as opposed to a desktop. He told me flat out "no":hmm: Then at another GS I was promptly told by two different GS employees that the Final Fantasy series had never been released on an Xbox platform. This was several years after FFXI came out so I could only look at them puzzlingly:?
