There are many kinds of RPGs out there, and as technology got better, certain new kinds became available.

There's the all-text sort, like Zork.

There's the Wizardry-sort.

There's the third-person, NES Dragon Warrior sort, or 2600 Adventure.

And, of course, those like Mario 64, Tomb Raider, and Spyro the Dragon (we'll count them as adventure games).

Others?

If somebody said to you "what sort of new RPG would you like to see for your favorite console," what would you want?

I'm partial to Wizardry-type games, with all-text a close second.

I grew up on the dragon warrior type games so that's my first choice. I'm quickly starting to love adventure types though where it keeps track of what percentage of the game you've completed.

Currently, my favorite RPG is Dark Cloud 1 & 2 (2 being much better, but 1 was still GREAT) Kinda like the Actraiser games on the SNES.

I'm a big fan of anything that just purely kicks my ass when I play it. Like in Wind Waker when you get the Master Sword and then there's a huge plot revalation, I had a huge grin on my face as I tapped through those scenes. Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy II/III/VI, Xenogears (Speaking of that, Xenosaga just got price dropped to $30! Gotta get it), anything that the story can really compel me to finish the game is my kind of RPG.

Got one more off the list today, only 27 psx rpg's left!

I've played the NES dragon warriors and loved them . Now I'm playing Dark Cloud 2 and love it. I finished the first one and was instantly hooked.

You know, I like the concept of RPGs, but I find that there are too few that aren't set in that traditional Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior -type realm. Xenogears/Xenosaga, the Persona series, Harvest Moon (arguably an RPG) and some others are notable exceptions, but IMO too few exist. As a gamer who just can't wrap his head around the whole spells/dragons/dungeons thing, I'd like to see RPG's with more science fiction/real world/hell even wild west :) themes.

Wow, I was actually thinking there aren't ENOUGH set in medieval times. pretty much EVERY console RPG lately has to have guns and machinery. Suikoden 3 was I suppose.

I'm a big fan of Infinity Engine games, like Baldur's Gate. I have a blast making up strategies, or making my favorite strategy (blast the hell out of everything) work in a given situation. It's a rare day that I can die to a boss over and over and be too busy formulating plans to get frustrated.

Other than adventure games, which are my favorite genre - probably Elder Scrolls stylee ones.

I like the style the Lunar games were done in, that sort of storytelling and turn-based fighting pulled together. I'm not a heavy RPG player, but those two (Lunar: SSS and Lunar: EB) just pulled me in.

Well, I'd have to say it's a toss up for me between the old standard "3rd person" and the nifty isometric Landstalker style (which I don't really count as RPGs). So I'll have to say 3rd person :)

I grew up on the Dragon Warriors and Final Fantasys myself so I like them best. The Lunar style comes in a close 2nd.
