View Full Version : Should I buy another 360 after mine just died?

Of course, mine died from the red rings of death. Mine was the first 360 put out. I've heard so many good things about Xbox Live so I shelled out 75 bucks for a used wireless adaptor. As soon as I turned on the 360 and plugged in the wireless adaptor, the screen froze and I got the rings.
Could it have been because of the used wireless adaptor I plugged into it?
Anyway it will cost 100 bucks to fix it plus shipping. Should I just buy a new one? Or do the new ones still suffer from the same problems my old one had? Does anyone know what the warranty is on these new Xbox 360s.
And, does the 360 Elite come with built in wireless?
Also Im on the PS3 live, but I'm not very happy with the games you can download. Castlevania, SF2 HD, and Wolfenstein 3-d are about the only ones I'm interested in. It looks like Xbox Live has much more games you can buy/download like Double Dragon, Robotron, and other oldschool arcades.
Thanks for your input!!!!! I really value opinions from the DP forums.
It's been really hard for me just to buy another 360 thinking it's gonna die again.

I thinking it may just be simpler to send the 360 in to get fixed. No idea how well the new ones work, but I would guess they may have problems since Microsoft still has the 3 year warranty on the RROD. It's only worth it if you really want the HDMI output. Also, I don't think the Elite has wireless built in, but I may be wrong as I've never seen one in action.
I don't think the wireless adaptor broke the Xbox, but it is a waste of money. So long as you have a computer within Ethernet cord distance of the 360 you can use that as a wireless adaptor so long as it has a WIFI card in it...

If you want the best gaming experience this generation(imo) than go get another one. The new Jasper chips have been much more reliable but I wouldn't say they are perfect either. Your warranty will be three years from the day you purchase it and that covers the rrod and E74 error. If you still have your hard drive just pick up an Arcade model. They do have jasper chips in them(well, the new ones do).
Elites do not have built in wireless but it would have been nice if all 360's did. The wireless adapter also isn't worth the $100 retail they cost. If at all possible just use ethernet cables for an excellent connection. Finally, I have to sadly inform you that Double Dragon is no longer available on XBLA. Me and some other forum members have been trying to figure out why for the past month or so. I wrote to OXM(again) so hopefully I'll have a concrete answer in my inbox sometime tomorrow. I hope that helps with your decision.

I'd second getting an Arcade unit.
For the extra 99 bucks you're guaranteed an HDMI output unit, a Jasper board, you'll get a wireless controller and bunch of decent games.
You can use the official microsoft online license transfer tool to copy your XBLA game "DRM" to your new system. Just remember that you can ONLY use that tool once a year.
AND, most importantly with that new unit you get a nice new standard warranty from date of purchase (which I believe currently is 3 years).

I would say go get a PS3, but chances are you have alot of 360 games, friends and accessories for it, so go get a new Jasper Arcade unit, it is a bit more stable.
Dump the RROD 360 off on Craigslist or ebay.

Well, I got a PS3 and a Wii. But I think Im going with the arcade. Thanks guys, great advice. I already got the 20G memory device and I got an eithernet cord, so I should be ready to go. Its only 200 bucks and if I was to get this repaired its atleast 100 bucks not to mention shipping.
I got lots of great advice in under 20 minutes. I love the DP community! Thanks so much.

I love my wii and the ps3 is a nice machine but the system to have is the 360 and being without one would suck. I just bought my second after my (near launch) unit failed twice once was RROD then the disc drive acted up now and then and finally the graphics card was toasted (man did that thing emit heat!) I sold it for parts/repair at 150 USD and got an elite (red RE edition) cause I needed the huge hard drive for my DLC :) if you don't download much though then a 20gig/arcade is the way to go

Yes I also have to have all the systems so I'm going with the Arcade 360 cause I already have the 20g memory. I am very bummed to hear that Double Dragon was taken off Xbox Live!!!!' That totally sucks cause I love that game. Again thanks for helping me with my delima.

Where's the "take a hatchet to it" contingent?
Anyway, like everyone else said, grab an Arcade and go to town. Enjoy!

Did your Arcade have 256MB or 512MB internal memory?

Could someone point me at the thread stating that Double Dragon was taken off Xbox Live Marketplace? I guarantee you that it has not actually been taken off, but that the selection was just removed. There is a policy in place to remove games with low Metacritic scores/low downloads, which is evaluated after 6 months of release and quarterly afterwards. All that needs to be done to download the game is to have someone recommend it to you. Send a message to my GT (Shadow Kisuragi) and I'll recommend it so that you can download it, provided this functionality hasn't been removed.
Also, if you're planning on getting a new box, I'll be glad to take your old one off your hands. Send me a PM and we'll sort out pricing.
Lastly: I've owned all versions of the Xbox 360 except for the Arcade. I would go with the Arcade if you already have the hard drive (20GB hard drives are cheap now anyway), as it's the value choice and now has the Jasper chipset which reduces heating and introduces HDMI. I would suggest buying new since you get a 3-year warranty on RROD and E74 (though, I have heard rumors from my fiancee that E74 errors will just keep coming back after a few months, and local shops have stopped accepting E74 repairs).
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Also, you should be able to make back most of that extra $100 by selling the extras you get with your arcade. Sell your RRoD system for $50 or so, the extra controller for $20, your old power supply and cables for $20, and you've got $90 back.

LOL Yes, yes it is. I don't think the Sega CD's were prone to failure coming off the assembly line.

I'd use your PS3 and Wii. The 360 is a great system but why throw another 199.99 down on it when the warranty will just expire in another three years?
The 360 is a system you most likely won't be able to play five years from now. What happens to all those arcade titles you buy when the system dies and Microsoft releases a new system and no longer supports the 360?

By that logic - why should ANY of us buy ANY DLC software on ANY system??
(Including Wii and PS3) There's been no clear indication that Wii and/or PS3 will allow for backwards compatibility/functionality with their DL content.
Furthermore, backwards compatibility isn't a guarantee on brick/mortar physical software or for ANY console/company either ... so "don't buy this because in X amount of years you won't be able to play it anymore/play it on the next gen system" is pretty silly.
Especially considering that there are millions and millions of 360s out there ... it may become harder to find a working one say, 20 years from now ... but if there's some type of necessity to do so, I'm sure that it won't be impossible.
And most importantly, I think it's safe to say that even those of us concerned about longevity DO want to simply enjoy games in the here and now regardless of what we'll be able to do with them in 10-20 years.

Because we'll more than likely still have a working Wii or PS3 10-20 years from now. If the PS3 or Wii happens to die, we can more than likely get it fixed without the RRoD coming at another random time.
So more than likely our DLC will still be fine with those systems. It's not like we have to be on a network in order to play it. The only thing is you better make sure to get a big enough harddrive to keep all that DLC if you tend to have alot of it.

You don't need to be on a network to play DLC on the 360. I do things like play XBLA games offline all the time.
Hopefully by the time MS discontinues the 360, things will of been hacked apart where we can do things like repair common defects like the 3 red rings and replacement DVD drives, download XBLA games, burn them to DVD-r's, somehow activate the licenses, etc., so we can keep things going without outside help from Microsoft after they've moved on.
That's what I'm hoping for at least.

I just sent my 360 in for the second time in 3 years. Instead of fixing my old system, they sent me a different one. It said it was a refurbished system, but it sure looked brand new. The clear plastic was still stuck to the disc tray. I got the system back(new one) in less than two weeks. It was probably 10 days or so.
I would call them back and talk to someone else and see if they will fix it for free. My sytem was out of warranty, but the lady on the phone offered to fix it for free without me asking. Keep calling til you get someone who will help you out.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/d/doubledragonxboxlivearcade/ to get Double Dragon.
That won't help according to this (http://forums.xbox.com/27649538/ShowPost.aspx). Thats one of the Double Dragon forums where many others have noticed that the game is no longer available for download. One member even knew why:
Technically, the titles weren't a part of the delisting policy; that was canceled after the NXE was revealed since the NXE had a more organized marketplace which eliminated the need to delist Arcade games. Lost Cities and Yaris were removed because of licensing problems (or the license was expired), and according to Gamerbytes, Double Dragon as well as Speedball 2 were removed because Empire Interactive had financial troubles.
Sounds like a good enough answer to me. Very unfortunate but atleast we now know why it's gone:(

In all seriousness though, if it were me I would turf the thing altogether. However, it sounds like you enjoy your 360 so...I would absolutely buy a new one. Like I said before if you send in your broken one, it will cost $100, it'll take around 4 weeks to get it back, you might get some shitty refurb back that might be just as crappy as your original unit, and if you buy a brand new one you get a new 3 year warranty.
On that note, if you decide to get a new one, please get the Pro model. Even if you keep the 20GB drive from your origiinal 360, that's going to fill up fast, that 60GB drive will come in handy. Also you the get component cables with the Pro, $60 right there.

If we still have it on our HDD it's playable right? It didn't self-destruct post NXE right?

I didn't say you did. I just said that you didn't need to be on a network to play DLC.
Meaning that in 10 years, the only two systems you'll have that are most likely not dead are the PS3 and Wii, so it won't matter if the PSN or Nintendo Channel or whatever their stuff is called is alive or not.

Like Damaramu said, if you already bought it then it's yours forever. And if you delete it you can also redownload it when ever you want. I really wish they would have given some warning before taken it down. I wonder if it could be downloaded to a memory card and shared that way. I doubt it but it might be worth a try.
