...but to make a long story short, CJayC sold GameFAQs to CNET after becoming overwhelmed by what has become an absolutely enormous site. He's convinced that the GameFAQs will retain the same level of integrity that it had when he was calling the shots. I think that's an optimistic viewpoint at best, but on the positive side, CJayC specified that all content written by contributors will remain the property of the authors after the acquisition takes place.
This is pretty big news. Does anyone have any opinions about the CNET takeover?

In the Cnet/ZDnet competition, I will almost invariably take ZDnet over Cnet, but Cnet's properties like download.com are generally well organized and kept up to date, so I don't see any problems with gamefaqs going to them.
I do wonder how this is going to affect gamespot's relationship with gamefaqs. but even then I don't think it will affect me, since for the most part I use the two services exclusively (as in separate from each other despite their connection).
As long as gameFAQs maintains it's simple straightforward (.TXT based) layout, I've no problem with it.

I think it's a move for the better. It was getting overwhelming, and while we'll still have to deal with the same sorts of idiots who were around earlier, it will work out.

I think it's too bad. I like the way the site is, and they WILL change it somehow. I can see them charging for it eventually too :)

God I hope they don't charge for gamefaqs. That would be a heavey blow to teh gaming world.....on the upside...Ic an't see em doing it, because they'd have to license EVERY faq on there from the authors or face heavy copyright infringement. I bet the ads alone would more htan pay for that site with it's traffic, so I doubt they'll charge for it. Intersting news though.

Interesting news...
I've been using Gamefaqs for years, and think that it is a great site, but I am worried about it. CJayC really brought the site together at the start, and I know that it is getting huge these days. So, I am not surprised that he passes the reigns on. I think that going pay would be a really bad idea. I remember when it used to be ad free. However, either way, I don't think that their relation to Gamespot makes much of a difference to those who really use the site.
When these video game sites go pay, I am totally turned off. I can usually find the same info for free somewhere else on the net, anyway. It happened with Gamespot and IGN. I agree with Silent that we will probably see some changes. The site had a personal touch before, and I think that we will lose that, at least.

Yeah, I used to go there most often until it was absorbed by ign then assimilated into the pay shithole that it is now.
The same is going to happen to GameFAQs, I'll bet. Combine the biased beaurocracy of CNet with the huge population of lamers already frequenting GameFAQs and I give it until December before it's a pay site with JavaScript coming out of every orifice, pop ups everywhere, and CNet's patented bias mixed in. They might as well just change the name to CNet's XBoxFAQs now and get it over with.
