not sure how this is happening but some how there seems to be a liquid/oily stuff coming from or getting on the rubber and on the plastic of the analog sticks. i keep stuff clean and it isn't like this when put up. after sitting a few days it seems to just come from nowhere. this controller is the original one that came with the ps2 slim in 06. it works and nothing seems to be wrong with it. i just want to know what this stuff is and where it is coming from and how to stop it? i usually have AC on and it is coolish in here. like under 70F usually. entertainment center is by AC but this isn't happening to any other game system. i cleaned the controller the past few times playing it too with alcohol too if that helps.

sorry if this is the wrong place for this and thansk for help.

that's good. it's not just me. i can't think of anything in it that could cause it. i even took it apart to clean it. this just don't make sense. sounds crazy but closest thing i can compare it to is it's bleeding.

I think you should find out what your sisters are doing with your dualshocks.

...

Seriously though, take pics :D

i just have a camera on my cell phone which is not really good. and my sister don't live here. i live alone. i take care of stuff. i don't even eat and play games. i don't know how anyone could do that now. not really much to see. just imagine what your analog stick would look like if it was wet. that is it. it has no smell or anything. another thing think could cause it is friction from the analog stick rubbing on the controller? still don't know how that could cause it.

Maybe over the years the controller has soaked up the oil from your thumbs and for whatever reason it is starting to leak back out? Is the rubber wearing out?

thing is it's not just the rubber. it's the plastic that goes into the controllers that does it too. if you look at this picture you see that part at the bottom that goes into the controller? that is wet too some how. like i said i take care of it and clean it.

there are no fluids or grease of any kind inside the controller, it must be external.. proberly grease and sweat from youre hands..

Maybe oil left over from the manufacturing process? Maybe there's a seal or gasket inside that's worn? What color is the oil?

Perhaps the rubber material is breaking down from exposure to air or UV light. Similar to the yellowing of snes consoles.

I have the same problem with both of my Dualshock 2 controllers. I used to blame it on the people around me, I thought they were putting oil on my sticks as a joke.

I don't think it's sweat/thumb oil, it gets caked up very high and is thick. I haven't even used my Dualshock 2s in a while and they still do it after I keep cleaning them.

I only have one idea that makes sense. The Dualshock 2s have rubber caps on the sticks, they aren't originally part of the sticks. So maybe before the caps are put on, the people/machines at the factory lube the top of the stick so the cap can be slid on easier and without tearing. And the lube is just now, after the sticks have had so much use, seeping through the cap and dripping down the sticks.

My uncle had a similiar problem with his Dualshock 2. I always thought he used the controller so much that he wore off the rubber top and that there was only plastic left and is why it was always wet with sweat.

actually that sounds like it might be that. it is clear and thickish like you said. i use alcohol wipes to clean them often. ther eis no left over and it drys. this sure is annoying. i don't get is this is not happening to the analog sticks on the gamecube too.

Yeah, the same thing happens to my controllers for GC/PS2 if I don't use them for several months. The oils from your thumbs get caked on the stick, and even though it appears clean after you use it, they seep out and gather dust over the course of time, making that nasty, sticky stuff. Not really any practical way to stop it from happening; you'll just have to clean them every so often.

This does make the most sense, unless of course Sony has perfected a biodegradable plastic and this is just the rubber reverting back to it's base petroleum product.

I've seen this happen on other rubber parts like SNES select/start buttons or the rubber pads on regular buttons. What really bothers me is how I've seen it on controllers that have been stored for ages and were perfectly clean before putting them in storage.

Maybe it has something to do with the climate of where you live?

I've never had this problem with any of my controllers.

There must be a logical reason.

With it being in Kentucky (I'm natively from Northern Ky. and living in Columbus now), maybe it's something to do with the humidity and the wildly changing temperatures around here. Even indoors, I would think the humidity would have some sort of effect, could be causing the materials to wear faster.

Just a thought.
