Thanks for being understanding about the week off. Not only was my trip fun, but it recharged my batteries to get my MAME on!

Club Rules

01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

Awesome, had 17 games to toss into the hopper this week. A lot of interesting choices, but the one that popped out of the lottery hopper first was Kid Niki: Radical Ninja.

Now, my first memory of this game was as a NES game. I remember the day-glo pink box...the combination mullet / rat-tail hairdo on Kid Niki on said box. The only thing I have no memory of is actually playing the game.

I just played this game for the first time ever. The level itself is pretty easy, but Death Breath handed me my lunch. I have a long way to go to be a good pastel ninja.

So remember, share screenshots, tips, high scores, questions in this thread this week. Most of all have a lot of fun.

Oh yeah, if you need the ROMs... please search out our sources:

Flack will be hosting at http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/

and 2DSkillz will have the games ROMs at http://www.retrogoggles.com/

Previous MMMC games: Jump Coaster, Rampart, Jungler, Ninja Emaki, Port Man, Psycho Soldier, Metamoqester, Gunbarich, Sengoku (series), Snacks'n Jackson, Metro-Cross, Moon Shuttle, The Real Ghostbusters, Moonwalker, Black Widow.

I used to play Kid Nikki at the skate park back in 1989 or thereabouts. NES game was fun too, I first saw the game in the "SECRET Video Game Tricks Codes and Strategies" tape where Jim Alee and Donn Nauert were showing me how to get into the secret rooms in each stage. (Which I don't think are in the arcade game)

As far as describing the game, imagine Kung Fu with more jumping and different enemies. And Nikki's spinning sword has a nice wide hitbox to help him mow down any enemy in it's range.

I haven't played this game in awhile-

135,200 - one credit.

By the way, to beat Death Breath you have to hit his body. Wait until he jumps, and hit him in the air or have him land on your sword.

I don't remember any arcades near me having this game, but I sure played the snot out of this one on the C64. I'll have to try the MAME version later and see how it stands up.

I didn't get a Kung Fu vibe off it XYXZYZ, for some reason I got an Adventure Island feel off the game. I know it doesn't share much with it, just the feel of the game was similar.

Thanks for the tip by the way. I will give that a go.

Adventure Island would probably be a better comparison, I thought of Kung Fu because of the way you plow forward knocking down whatever gets in your way in a single hit, enemies in front of you and enemies coming up from behind.

Ha! Kung-Fu Master was the first thing that popped into my mind when I started playing this game.
I don't really like Kid Niki, mainly because I find him very awkward to control.

But then, I'm a totally rad ninja :D

Another game that I'm not that great at. I couldn't get past the second boss. It'll probally help as I learn the game a bit more though. At first it was "Ooh, there's some birds floating in the air. I wonder what I get for grabbing it, they killed a poor bird at the beginning so it must be something good for me"...then it kills me! Stupid bird!

Then when I was fighting the 1'st boss I thought he threw a sword I could get. Turns out it was my sword and I was weaponless LOL

As for the Kung-Fu Master comparison, acording to wikipedia, they do run on the same hardware. It does sort of play like a more cartoony version of it.

Man, I just cannot get the hang of this game. I feel like I should turn in my gamer card for not being able to beat the first level.

I can beat the first and second levels on a single man -- it's the third level that eats my lunch. Who invented Ninjas on Kites?

I didn't get a chance to play this. Mostly because I spent the week trying to fix my Donkey Kong, and MAME club was out of my mind. So now I'm done working on DK for a while, because I can't figure out it's fucking problem... and I'll get to this game next week when I play the new MMMC game. Although that brand new copy of Ghostbusters for the PS3 is sitting on the coffee table, and I can hear it calling my name.

Who invented Ninjas on Kites?

Programmers on acid.

I still can't get past the second level. I can get a few hits in on him but I keep dying and eventually gave up. How many hits does he take?

Three or four ... I can't remember. At first I spent all my time trying to attack him from the front; it's much easier to jump over him and attack him from the rear (and then go chase down your sword ... Christ, for such a radical ninja this guy sure can't hold on to a sword). After a while he gets out his throwing star ... when you see that just jump over it and him and run around and hit him in the back again. It only took about four times of doing that to kill him (took me about 20 credits to figure it out the first time though, hah).

Alright, so I got to round 4 without cheating. After two dozen times (or more) of trying to avoid those bats I became pretty frustrated. Needless to say, in order to finish the game I had to turn on Invulnerability in the dip switches menu. I'm wondering if the controls were that bad in the original arcade? Maybe it's just a bad mame translation. Most of my dying was a result of the unresponsive controls. The beginning of stage 5 would have been an impossibility without the cheat because those guys would drop right on top of you by the handful. Anyway even with better controls the rooftop boss fight would have still been pretty challenging. That Kid Niki is one rad dude fo' sho.
