I'm planning on having a classic gaming get together sometime in the future and would like to pick up some of the best 2 player (preferably vs) games for the original gameboy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Faceball 2000, perhaps?
I'd like to say Yoshi's Cookie, but there are other ways to play that. And that's a good question, actually: are you looking for sort-of GB exclusives?

yeah, i would say tetris too. Only GB? Oh c'mon! Every classic gaming needs some mario kart! :P

Not necessarily, just some fun choices.

Well, I'll have several different systems and a Mame cabinet as well. It's just that I have 2 gameboys and a link cable but no 2 player games, not 2 of the same game at least...I just thought that 2 player GB would be a fun option since I already have the systems and all. The games seem to be cheap and easy to get at my local game store but since I'd need 2 of each I didn't want to end up with a bunch of crap times 2.
And, I'll have Tetris for sure.

The games seem to be cheap and easy to get at my local game storeYou have one heck of a local game store, then. Perhaps you should double-check on the selection there.
I dimly recall that Revenge of the Gator is supposed to be kind of fun in two-player mode, and apparently Space Invaders is pretty good too.
These also come to mind, but I'm really not sure about a lot of them. Perhaps you should try them in 1-player mode on an emulator first.
Titus the Fox
Go Go Tank
The Hunt for Red October
Radar Mission (specifically the action game component, not the Battleship clone)

Well, the games you'd expect to be more are generally priced higher, but most of the cart only original GB games are $5 or less. Maybe not always the best deal you can find but certainly affordable.

What is this Tetris I keep hearing about??? Seriously though, does 2 players really add a lot to it to make it the definitive 2 player Gameboy game...or is that just the one most people have played since everyone had it? It's like Puyo Puyo where you send junk to the other players screen right?
I'm certainly going to pick up another copy. And thanks for the other suggestions as well, I'll be sure to check them all out.

But it's well-presented and has Mario and Luigi and more good music.

Dr. Mario is right up there with Tetris.

Revenge of the Gator
This really is a good game. I've forgotten all about it. Didn't realize that there was a 2-player aspect to it...VERY interesting!

Super R.C. Pro-Am (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_R.C._Pro-Am) would be my top pick. It's classic NES style R.C. Pro-Am, supports up to four players (with the four player adapter) and is an outstanding on the go game. I'd also toss F-1 Race in there as well. It's kind of like Pole Position on the Game Boy and also supports four players.

Oh HELL YEAH! Me and my friends when I was little used to play that game a lot during recess. Anyways, besides that. F-1 Race, Tetris, and Pokemon are sure-fire definites.

Warlocked is a phenomenal game that was sadly over looked by most.
I played all the way through the Human campaign and then again with the Orc/Goblins or whatever they were. It's been years but it is a must have GBC game.
I never was able to talk my friends into buying a copy because they just borrowed mine. But I always wanted to play it multiplayer. Warcraft II style battles across the GBC would be unforgettable!!

Warlocked does sound like a game that I would be interested in. It looks like it's only available for GBC though. I'm not a big fan of Pokemon but what is 2 player like on those? Do you compete against each other? They tend to be a bit pricier though so I'm probally going to stay away from them.
Several of the ones mentioned so far have been in the $5 and under category so I'll probally check them out first.

Do you compete against each other?2-player Pokemon is great if both players have teams that they've been putting together and tweaking for hours on end, but it's really not something that two new people can just pick up and play - or at least not if they want to have much fun.

That's the draw-in for it. It's an RTS for a handheld that's weaker than just about any PC. It's less technologically advanced than the first Command and Conquer. But it's still freaking good.

No, I meant that I'm only looking for 2 player games for the original Gameboy. Warlocked does look cool though so I'll checking it out anyways.

Kingdom Crusade aka The Legend of Prince Valiant!
F1 used the 4-player adapter, never tried it like that though.

Those later JP fighting games are quite good too.

Isn't Revenge of the Gator just 2 players alternating?

Not a ton of choices, all things considered. I remember thinking that it was really cool but in retrospect I hardly ever used my link cable.
Besides Tetris and Pokemon, I remember enjoying Motocross Maniacs. Kind of a fun, competitive racing game.
Rolan's Curse was also multiplayer but I never played it that way - too much of a rarity to find someone else with a cartridge.
