The guys over at Lens of Truth decided to review Jaws for one of their retro pieces. Here is a glimpse of what they said:

With summer upon us and blockbuster movies hitting the screens, I couldn’t resist replaying Jaws. I watch Jaws almost every summer night and the opportunity to review this game was going to be as enjoyable as drinking Quint’s moonshine. Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your NES again….

...Obviously there was no QC back then or we would have never seen this game. Jaws is a disgrace to gaming and should have never reached store shelves. When a game can be finished in under twenty minutes there is a serious problem...

I still remember renting this game from Blockbuster back in the day...what a bad game. :-/

I really liked that game.

Yeah, it's not really as bad as some people would like to think. It is actually pretty enjoyable for what it is. Not a great game by any means but there are far far worse.

I played this a lot when I was a kid. I don't think it was all that bad. I never did beat it, because I didn't understand that I had to upgrade my weapons. I just kept shooting Jaws with the harpoon over and over again, and thinking "Uhhh...".

It actually reminds me a lot of some early Atari games. It's not -bad-, just overly simplistic.

I remember I had that game too when I was little. Never figured out what to do.

I can remember when I beat this game. It was by sheer luck. I was shooting jaws like always when suddenly there was a different view. I miracuously skewered him with my boat. I was like oh ...

Complete happenchance.

I agree with the majority of people here. The game really wasn't that bad.

I feel special beating it shortly after I got it for Christmas, 1987. :)

Funny, I know another game that can be beaten in 20 minutes or less, but no one considers it to be horrible... *coughSuperMarioBroscough*

And that dude sucks. I can beat the game in under 15 minutes. ;)

I agree with Kitsune Sniper... Jaws plays awfully similar to the Activision Atari 2600 game Seaquest. In the DP review (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=5925), Joe calls it "Seaquest meets Air-Sea Battle in the land of Shark! Shark!" Maybe it's because I like all three of those, but I like Jaws well enough. It's not fantastic but it's a fun little diversion, and it's a really short game. 15 or so minutes is just about right.

the game isn't terrible, but I think people expect more from a Jaws game. Like, action, carnage, etc.

They tried to deliver that with Jaws Unleashed I think. Never played it, but that didn't get a lot of attention either.
