View Full Version : Who actually feels a nostalgia factor from original PS1 hardware?

Since this is the one classic console that has been made over 90% obsolete by having its successors compatible with it, does anyone here prefer using an original Playstation or PS One to play its games rather than a PS2 or PS3 (or emulator)?
I would say for myself there is a slight nostalgia factor that takes me back to the days when I first learned about the Playstation and tried it out, especially when I play one of the first games I had for it. My mom's ex introduced it to me when I was a teenager and it became an instant favorite. I even own the monitor we used to play it on, so when coupled with that screen it almost makes me feel like I went back in time.
Even though I do feel nostalgia for using the hardware, I rarely dig it out and use it. I feel even less nostalgia for Playstation 2 and that system hibernates even more than the PS1.
What matters to you when it comes to nostalgia? Just the game itself, the controller you use, or does it even take the same form of the unit you play it out of to give you that feeling?

Since they kept the same controller design, playing on a PS2/PS3 doesn't feel much different to me (although the PS3 emu can be off at times).

I feel that I don't really need to get out my PS1 to get the nostalgia factor, though I occasionaly like to get out my original unit out just for fun (It is my first game console BTW).
I have never played any PS1 games on the PS3, but playing them on the PS2 is almost exactley the same feel as playing them on the PS1.

Since I've had my PS2 (2001) I never played a single PS1 game on it. I always used the PS1. Although I dont have a PS3 with backwards compatability for the PS2, I most likely would still play those PS2 games on my PS2. I just like to play on the original hardware.

I use a PSone with LCD every day for work on Game-Rave. I use it for Screen Cap and movie capturing. It's through-fed to a S-Video TV.

i still feel a nostalgia factor from it. i had a n64 between it and the Genesis/SNES days of my youth but with only one game for the n64 it just didn't stand out as much.
the PS1 holds the title as the system that officially got me heavy into games, and into RPGs. i got one for Christmas 2002 with FF Chronicles and was hooked since. my next few games only solidified my love for RPGs. FF VII, FF Anthology, Lunar Silver Star. now only 7 years later i have over 120 games, 60-70 being RPGs alone, spanning 11 systems and i can thank the PS1 for it completely:rocker:

Every single time I turn on my PSX, and I see the initial boot up white screen, I get A LOT of goosebumps. So many memories come flooding back whenever I see that.
Too bad my PS3 doesn't have it. :-( My PSX and PSOne are boxed up right now.

I was feeling nostalgic about it back when I first played Tenchu. At least, I get more or less the same feeling from the system's crazy visuals.
And it seems I'm still one of the only people on the 'net who's referred (apparently correctly) to "affine texturing" :p

One important thing you don't get when playing PS1 games on a PS2 or 3 is the original PS startup screen, with the slicing sword sound & bassy sound effects etc. :)"Bowwww BOWWWWWWWW" you know, that sound effect. ;D
There is a big nostalgia factor with me. I preordered a PS in the summer of '95 and picked mine up from TRU on launch day. Used my own lawn mowing money to buy it and everything. I had been to Hawaii for a week on summer vacation in 1995, and all I could think about when I was there was the Playstation! :P I brought my gaming mags with me just to read about it some more etc.
Also the demo disc I got when I preordered the Playstation was the first CD I ever owned, music or gaming.. I was 13 at the time btw.
Infact I just bought the original launch Playstation box on ebay. It's almost all black and I get a lot of nostalgia from looking at it. ;) Actually I bought an OG PS from ebay just yesterday. I've owned many but right now don't have one and felt like having an OG PS again, with another original box. I'm also looking into getting the specific PS "audiophile" edition, which is the first US edition with the AV out plugs. Supposedely the quality of CD music that comes from it is unmatched even by high end equipement. I do remember rocking out my CD's on my original launch Playstation and it sounded awesome, but I didn't know any better back then.
so anyway, I had bought like 15 games over the course of 6+ months after I got my PS. All longbox games. Then my PS started not working after I had played Resident evil quite a bit. So I sold it and my games to BRE software iirc. I remember being very nervous that they wouldn't accept the PS cus it didn't work, but they sent me a check. :) Then I preordered an N64. Woohoo! :D I skipped the SAturn back then.. ;)

DB mentioned in another thread how he thought PS2 games look awful on the PS3, and that's how I feel with PS1 games on the PS2. Even with smoothing off it doesn't feel right to me, visually or otherwise. Once the PSOne hit 80 bucks, I bought one, and sold the crappy bundled games.
Besides, it's much less of a pain playing import games on an actual PS1 than it is with a fat PS2 (in fact, I'd buy a PS2 Slim in a heartbeat if the same swapping method as the PSOne was doable).

I always had so much trouble out of mine that I was glad to ditch it. It got to where I had to stand it on its side to make it work, and even then it would still skip sometimes. It did have a nice smiley-face sticker that I got from PSM on it, though.

The early original PS models had skipping problems.. But the later models (even before the PSone) fixed the problem. Here's a great rundown of all of the versions of the PS, scroll about 1/3rd or halfway down the page:

PS - I never did care for the name PSone or the smaller (mini) PS model. ;)

I would say no. I just don't feel much desire to play PS1 games in general since the graphics don't really seem to hold up and there are very few games which offer the kind of gameplay that keeps me coming back to other consoles of similar age. I do still have my PS2 hooked up despite the fact that I have a backward compatible PS3, so I guess I would say I have a nostalgic feeling for the PS2, but that doesn't extend back to the PS1.
I usually played my PS games on my PS, but since I've got a ton of stuff hooked up I'm using my ps3 now. I still have my first original PS with the box and the styrox pieces and all the paperwork (my mom kept it for me). The box had been in storage for 11 years until my mom brought it for me last week, what a great nostalgia kick in. That said, I'll have to box it up since I don't want my new puppy to totally destroy it :P.

much prefer playing ps1 games on a ps2. ps1's are so damn failure-prone (even more so than the ps2, it seems). never tried the psone, though i've heard they're more reliable. plus there's the fact that ps2 supports wireless logitechs (so much better than dualshocks!)
plus for all you purists out there, consider that each ps2 actually contains ps1 hardware.

I think this is an interesting discussion, since there isn't a huge difference playing games on the PS1 or PS2. Plus the PS2 doubles as a DVD player so it might be more of a convenience.
The last system to allow this kind of backwards compatibility was the Atari 7800. One might wonder, would the Atari 2600 still be popular today if the Atari 7800 was released at the proper time and was well received?
I have posted a news item on the videogametrader.com blog to spur more conversation on this topic.

I'm also looking into getting the specific PS "audiophile" edition, which is the first US edition with the AV out plugs.
I still have my launch system (box & everything that came with it) and pulled it out last week to see if it still worked and it works great. I even tried the old disc swap method to see if I remembered how to do it that still worked.
The PlayStation arrived during a low point of gaming for me. I had recently graduated from high school and I was busy getting drunk and having fun with friends. I looked at the PlayStation with very little interest until the release of Tekken. Then it was a must-have. I dropped $550 on a system (with Ridge Racer pack-in), controller memory card, Tekken, and MK3.
So, I have no particular nostalgia for the system. My few years with it were spent playing Tekken, Tekken 2, NFL GameDay, Bust A Move, and whatever random crap I rented. I spent more time playing N64 than the PlayStation. After getting tired of FF7 being delayed yet again, I sold off the system and games.
I stuck to PC gaming until the Xbox, which brought me back into console gaming. I then fell in love with Dance Dance Revolution. The Xbox version was crap, so I sold off the Xbox, and bought a PS2, since DDR was virtually arcade perfect on it. Of course, this lead to me checking out which games I missed on the PS1. I ended up acquiring 30 PS1 games, despite never really playing any of them.
After a few years, I start trying the PS1 games and find that I like them more than the PS2 games. I actually ended up buying a separate PSOne and a used Sony Wega CRT TV to put in the bedroom. The PS2 gathered dust and I am in the process of selling off the PS2 collection now.
So, despite having no real nostalgia for the PlayStation, it is currently my favorite console system. I now own 45 games and play it almost daily. I own both the latest "fat" model (9001) and the PSOne. Both were purchased from Ebay sealed in box to ensure freshness. I just played through Klonoa for the second time and I am working on Chrono Trigger.

If you still have that preorder disc play the demo's on it. I remember how cool they looked back then, now you'll see how far we have come in terms of graphics.
No. Nostalgia is reserved for games I played as a kid. And I'm an old fart :(

Me too. The PS1 was my first system as an independent adult - though I had an SNES while still in college. I really enjoyed the hell out of coming home from work, playing some Return Fire or Twisted Metal or FF... So for me, it's got a strong nostalgia factor.

Yup I know the games in the demo well! :D Graphics have come a long way for sure, but I've gotten to the point that I don't care about new systems anymore, and infact am mainly in games from the 90's. From the NES to the N64 and everything in between are my main interests. I lost interest in games starting with the DC as at that time I had my first serious gf and only care about her and partying. ;) But ya that demo disc is a great one loaded with classic games.

We were a Nintendo family but I always enjoyed visiting my cousin and trying her PlayStation. She had Crash Warped and it was a lot of fun. PlayStation doesnt mean as much to be as it does to many as I didnt actually get one until 2001ish. I still prefer to play with the original hardware though.

I do prefer playing PS1 games on a PS1, but I don't really think about it. I don't have either my PS1, or PS2 hooked up anymore, so depending on what I play, I'll hook up either console.
I do like the loading screen (the white with the logo) on the PS1 more though.

While I like the boot-up screen and accompanying sounds, I don't have much of a nostaglia factor the the PS1. I never owned a PS1 until 2004 and before than I had only ever experienced it through friends. Like the times of the N64 I wasn't big on games then and never really enjoyed the experiences either console provided.

Once I got my PS2 I ended up giving my PSX to my brother a year later. When I didn't own a PSP, which is what I play all my PSX games on now, I played all the PSX games on my PS2.
The only thing is that some games didn't play properly. Vandal Hearts is one as it cut the bottom half of the exp off every time you gained exp(which was the majority of the time you took an action.) Then on Grandia where there were clouds going overhead on one part of the game it would actually be a long square shadow(this may be because of smoothing though, not sure.)

I kind of do. It was the first system I got after my NES(I lived with my aunt for a while and she had a SNES and Genesis, so I wasn't missing much). I remember getting it from Palmer Video for $399. I got Pitfall 3D and Gex: Enter the Gecko with it. That Sunday, I picked up Mortal Kombat 4 and I used to play that for hours. I also remember pre-ordering WWF War Zone from Kay Bee and playing that for a long time.
But, my biggest memory was getting Metal Gear Solid for Christmas. I got to the Ninja and I got the "Spinning Circle of Death"(the Disc icon in the upper left hand corner). We took it back and come to find out, the disc was halfway blank. NICE! So, we scored another copy and I beat it with guide in a weekend.
Yeah, this system does have tender memories for me. But, with my modded PSP, I can rip my PSX games to my hard drive and convert them to use on the PSP. It are the awesomeness.

I wasn't nostalgic for it until recently. Playing SoulBlade, Jumping Flash!, and Symphony of the Night in the past year really made me giddy, especially with the original digital controller.
I have a hard time playing PS1 games that I didn't play back then, though, so it's clearly nostalgia.

I guess this shows how often I've played PSOne games on PS2 hardware, but I thought the PS2 showed the original PSOne bootup intro when playing a PSOne title?
Edit - Guess I'm remembering incorrectly, just checked to see for myself. Does the PS3 show the original when playing a PSOne title? Mine is unhooked at the moment, but maybe that's what I'm remembering.

it shows up the last half, the plack psx logo, but not the white start up, a small thing maybe...
and the ps3 does the same start up as the ps2.

Yeah, I have fond memories of the PS1. I currently have 3 (2 old models 1 PSOne /w screen) and I one point I had six in my apartment.
Up until very recently I would keep a modded PS1 (with a cool clear green casemod) alongside my current gen consoles with a disc containing It Might Be NES and a full-set of US NES games. With a pair of modern wireless PS2 controllers it would always be a hit at parties.
"Hey, what's that green PS1?"
"It's my NES!"
"What?"
(Turns it on and displays all of the games .... non-stop playing ensues)
Though, last month I got an emulator-filled X-Box (including but not limited to NES) so that's supplanted the ol' modded PS1 which will now go into hard storage.

PS1 was the first system to really get me into console gaming. My SNES had been worn out for years, and PC titles like Prince of Persia, Rebel Assault, etc, had been happy to fill the void. Then one Christmas in came the PS1 with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, quickly making itself one of my favorite systems to this day.
After the PS2 arrived, I moved the PS1 to a small set in my bedroom, and would play my favorites there. We had this awesome Blockbuster that for years would sell the classics for like 10 or 20 bucks. Castlevania SotN, Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu, Final Fantasy VII, FF Tactics...
Well I sure am nostalgic now.

Sorry, not me. That generation was one of my least favorite, and I think the PS1 was probably my least favorite machine of that generation.
Like was said elsewhere, I have nostalgia about the games I played when I was younger. I was well into my 20s when the PS1 came out.

I like using the original hardware when I play games... I'm not 100% sure why, I just figure that if I'm gonna wear out my PS2 it should be with PS2, not PS1, games. Anyway, I've got a PSone that I use for any Playstation games and I'll probably get an original Playstation when I see one in good condition... and for the right price.
