First the Xbox 360...now my PS3. I was finally going to give Metal Gear Solid 4 a go. I installed it but then started getting weird red screen errors if I left the game in the drive upon startup. Took the game out, no problems. Hmm. Then I tried playing and found I couldn't save my game due to an error. Great.

So I uninstalled MGS4 and removed a few corrupt game saves. Then I tried doing a firmware upgrade, just in case that might have fixes. After it updated, I was greeted with the Red Screen upon boot. Nothing I have done with "safe mode" helped. So an email was sent off to Sony in hopes they could come up with the magic solution.

I'm wondering if my unplayed-with Wii is booby trapping my other systems.

Well looks like you have a very unlucky PS3, is the light yellow? (I don't have one but I heard this from others) I heard that you have to actually buy a whole new system sony doesn't fix it, the failure rate on PS3s are like .02 or something like that.

Well only reason microsoft fixes their systems for free is because they'd actually buy a ps3 if they had to buy a new 360 every 2 weeks.

If you're talking about the power on/access light, no they are normal green and blue.

One thing you can try is to remove the hard drive (you won't void warranty...the manual shows you how to remove the HD as a matter of fact) and turn it on without it. See if you get a screen. If you do, chances are the HD got corrupted somehow.

I had something like this happen once and what I did was to remove the HD and hook it up to my PC, and then use Compuapps Swissknife (free HD utility..search google) to remove the partition and format it FAT32. When you pop it back in the PS3, the system will reformat it again with the proprietary PS3 OS. After that you should be back to normal...providing the HD was the issue.

Didn't think of trying that, though it was getting late when I turned it off for the night. As in "see if I get a screen", are you talking about the XMB or something else?

Without a HDD inserted you'll get a screen that says something to the effect of - PS3 can not start without hard drive. So, that's likely what you'll see.

I got a chance to remove the hard drive during lunch. I pulled it and powered up the system and got a black screen. A few moments later it stated that it couldn't find the hard drive. No red must mean no dead.

I'll give the format approach a try. I know I've got a SATA cable floating about somewhere at home. Thanks for the advice zektor!
