Here's the story:

I was doing my daily eBay rounds when I noticed something that looked out of the ordinary. I've had good luck in the past with such auctions (see my brother's Mappy Land prototype find), so I figured I would throw down a bid and cross my fingers. I ended up winning the lot for just over $25 shipped. Here's the link:

Star Trek is one of the last five carts I need to complete my Vectrex set, so I figured no matter what it was an alright deal. Boy was I wrong. The package shows up today and I immediately open up the Cosmic Chasm case. Before opening the cart I notice that the actual casing is actually slightly different than a typical Vectrex cartidge. Here's what I was greeted with:

Yep, a genuine Vectrex prototype. The date on the cart 6-1-82 actually predates the release date of the system by 4 months! To my knowledge this is the oldest know Vectrex prototype (only by 3 days mind you). Any prototype collector will tell you just how rare Vectrex prototypes are. I can't tell you how pumped I am!

It's interesting that sometimes sellers don't have any idea what they have. I got a Black Bass proto for $12 in a very similar situation on eBay.

Great find! I've never seen a Vectrex proto before!

Also, the auction link is not showing up. Do you have a picture of the lot you won? I think it would be neat to see where the proto was "hiding".

I fixed the link, so it should work now.

I'm always amazed at what people don't realize they have too. I actually sent the seller a message asking about the cart. Here's how it went down:
Me:
"Hi there!

I noticed that the Cosmic Chasm game cart has a strange label on it. Did you happen to apply that label, or did it come that way?

Thanks!
- Matt"

His response:
"Hi, yeah I forgot to clarify that. I believe it was a homemade
label. I don't remember what happened to the original label -
it was a long time ago! Let me know if you have any other
questions. Josh"

No questions here Josh lol!

On a sidenote, if you ever want to sell that Black Bass prototype I would pay good money for it. Just something to consider.

Heh, my seller told me that the label on Black Bass was a "company" label. He even messaged me after I won it asking if I knew what it was. Also, I'm not sure if you'd want my proto, because from what I can tell it's exactly like the retail verson of the game. I haven't dumped it to see (I need to just for archival purposes). Anyway, I'm keeping it because it's the first proto I've found (and I've been collecting games for almost 5 years now lol).

I was hoping you'd chime in. Outside of one eBay sale and a post on AA, I've never seen a Vectrex prototype sell. Any idea what it might be worth?

I would still totally be interested in buying it regardless. I do understand that need to hold onto it though. I wouldn't sell my first prototype no matter how much money was offered to me.

I'd send a message to Vectrexer (sp?) or Mayhem. They are the forums vectrex nutz and could help you with that one.
