View Full Version : What will you do after you finish collecting?

The question came up in another thread so I thought I would start a new one dedicated towards it.
What do you plan to do after you finish collecting the games or items you are currently looking for? How far away are you from asking yourself this question?

I'm approximately about 7 days and 6 months from asking myself this question. I'll let you know then, provided that I answer myself immediately.

Well, after I've finished my mini-collections, (one of which is Sonic, which will never be done). I'll move on to the next mini-collections I have in mind. Then after uni when I've got a Job, I'll start seriously aiming for a complete Dreamcast/Saturn collection. After that? Who knows? Maybe Megadrive or Gamecube? I'll never stop! :D

die, and leave the collection to my kids to do whatever the hell they want with it.

Word life. I'll start collecting dollars, since I won't be spending them on games!

Collecting for me is a business as well as a hobby, so I won't even have any extra time when my own collection is finished. :( But I'll just do what I do now: play the games I have in the amount of free time I have and bitch about not having enough free time.

I'm having quite the opposite thoughts. I don't think the human life is long enough for me to finish my collection. Sometimes, I wish I was a turtle.

As other people already mentioned, I'll either play them as I'll finally have them in my possession, or just die. Or something else, I don't really know. LOL
I guess there will always be new games coming out too, but I don't know if I'd be interested in any of them by that point.

I keep finding ways to extend certain collections for some reason. I might have all the games for the NGPC, but now I for some reason need all the system box variants, on top of having one of each system and all accessories ect ect. I did the same with the Dreamcast (with at least all the games) and I know that i'll end up doing what DB did with the PlayStation when I finally get myself to that point where I could call the collection complete.
Otherwise i'll move up/on/along with whatever current systems are out there on to the next thing.

The short answer is to play and enjoy until my carcass gets chucked into the crematorium and the collection goes to my kids.
I'm starting to realize that I may be reaching a point in life where I can, should and probably will bring the task of active collecting to a halt, and be content with it. About the only system I'm actively collecting for anymore is the old Atari 2600. I've been mulling over setting a particular benchmark - say a complete set of games <=R5 - with respect to the acquisition of games before time, money and fatigue all take their toll. It's achievable within two to three years...sooner if something causes the market to drop. And barring the occasional happenstance of serendipity, that will probably be that.

There isn't enough time to play all the great games that I don't even have, so I don't think I'll ever be done due to finishing collecting.

Ill probably hold onto my game stuff and sell most of it off later on in life.

I think I'm growing out of collecting. It takes up a lot of space, most games are more or less worth nothing, I've gotten the couple major items I've always wanted (64DD, NEO GEO arcade cabinet), and I rarely have time to play games anymore.
I haven't figured out what I want to do now, though. I would love to reclaim a lot of the floorspace my collection has taken up somehow, but I don't know what I want to do. Sell stuff, box stuff up, I don't know.

If you're having trouble answering this question, you can always go for collecting every Atari 2600 game, with variants. That way, you'll never have to worry about what happens when you finish the collection.

My collecting career ended about four years ago. It's going to take a lifetime to play all of the stuff I've amassed, but I'm making pretty good progress.

When you stop collecting, you should open up a store and sell it, so that other people may get a chance to experience retro video games.

I never thought I'd say it, but thank god for digital downloads :P Lets me focus more on getting good deals off Steam - and also playing things.

I'd like to attack the "guilt" that I have also collected over the years, for collecting more than playing. My idea is to draw up a master list of everything that I have and then randomly pick a game "out of the hat," and then make a video review on it.
I have always wanted to do video reviews, but I never feel like I have time. With this idea, not only will I be forced into playing games that I may never get around to playing, but I can also provide reviews to people who don't bother reading game reviews often (like me). As a plus, I can always get rid of anything that sucks after said review.
It is crazy how often playing a bad game with friends can be as enjoyable as playing a good one.

I'd say that as long as games are still coming out I'll still be collecting, but even that isn't necessary. There are already enough games in existence to keep me hunting them down for my whole life. For the most part, I never really have a "looking for" list. There's just stuff I really want and other stuff I'll happily give a try if it's cheap enough, and that basically encompasses all games in existence. :P

I don't think I'll ever stop collecting entirely but I've slowed down in my active pursuit because my collection is pretty close to where I'd like it. But I still go to yard sales and flea markets and thrift stores and if I see a good deal I'll grab it.
Thats the difference between collecting and having a collection. The former is an active pursuit of something, the latter is something you just "have". I think its safe to say that its true for almost all of us that its the hunt thats the most fun and exciting. That rush of finding something you didn't own, something rare or valuable you can brag about getting for a dollar. You don't get that having a "collection", you get that by collecting.
Its just too much fun to ever completely stop.

Sounds like you have 4 choices:
1 - Don't stop/there is no end.
2 - Play them.
3 - Sell them.
4 - Masturbate furiously.

Never realy thought about it. When I first started, was only after the games I used to own on any system I sold off. Then it was games for certain companies. Then entire genres. I'm still not up to the point where I want every game for any system. I hope I never reach a point where I feel I'm done collecting games though. Yes, it's sad to say I want to continue buying games for the rest of my life, but somehow it feels even worse to think that there'll come a day when I stop and feel there's nothing left worth buying. I get the feeling that day will come when there's nothing phisical to buy.
Selling doesnt even sound like a viable option though. If I got $15 a game for my entire collection, I still wouldnt. What would I do with the money that was any more important then what I've already done with it? Buy a house? That'd be one empty house with no furniture.....

If I finish collecting (which will never end in my lifetime), I will just play the games and maybe open up a gamestore and sell doubles of games I have, and even open up a game museum.

Answer to those.
1. That's what she said.
2. Would be a crime for any video game fan not to do even when collecting.
3. Only when the game is crap.
4. I'm doing that right now(kidding.)
Anyways. I honestly don't think I'll get out of video games unless they take the absolute turn for the worst. Even then I'll still have the games I own I'll enjoy.

Exactly. I still play now but somewhere between playing and collecting I started to become more of a collector. I wish I could play more but that would deprive me of precious collecting time.

Not unless they make a one handed controller and last time I checked the Wii didn't have any dating sims. And honestly thats probably a good thing, especially when you consider used Wii remote sales:yipes:

No way, I wouldn't do that to my games. They deserve better than that. I just searched on google images and took the first pics on the page, just search for "bathtub nintendo". Pretty creepy though.

I have it layed out perfectly, once i've collected a full nes, atari, snes. turbografx, genesis.gameboy as well as transformers gijoe power rangers voltron and a few other things I collect.... I plan on finding the fattest bitchiest most anoying woman, possibly get her preggers and have her force me to sell all my stuff so she can buy a liftime supply of bon-bons and sit on the couch watching court tv while spending all the rest of my collection money on whatever she wants while I work myself to the bone being miserable and unhappy for the rest of my life.
seems the popular thing to do right?
thankfully I don't think i'll ever have everything I desire to collect so that sad fate will never happen :-)

I randomly came across those pics ages ago while just searching for Nintendo stuff, later I thought those pics would be good to post in some forum topic so I tried to search for them using "bathtub" and they showed up. I know I posted them before for some reason, maybe even on another forum too(I really can't remember as it was a long time ago).
Those carts are probably all ebayed by now, ending up in other peoples collections.
