View Full Version : I have an idea for a community project...

Ever since Vidgame.net went down a while back, I haven't really had a good go to place to quickly find basic tech info on consoles. Sure, I can ask here, and so can everyone else, but that would be just a waste to keep having topics such as "What AC adapter does the Game Gear use?" "Crap, I lost my cord that goes between my 32x and my Genesis, what does it look like?"
Issues like that would be rather easy to solve if we had an small FAQ section that addressed those questions.
E.G.: The NES page would have the basic specs for the NES, pics of the AV and RF cables for visual reference, pics of the AC Adapter and specs and maybe info on some of the more common questions, such as the 72-pin.
With as many active members that we have, I'm sure this would be a rather simple project to implement if Joe would want to add the info into the site. I'm sure it would help drive up a bit of traffic since people with basic questions could just be directed to Digital Press instead of being told to "Google it" and have to deal with possibly not being able to find the info.
Any thoughts from you guys?

I'm BetaWolf47, and I approve this message. The internet lost a great site when vidgame.net closed. It'd be nice to have something similar.

That's a cool idea, I'd be up for it.

Good idea. Perhaps have information on how to repair common problems, like the fuse problem with the Sega CD, or s-video mods on the systems.

A wiki would be a great option, or an FAQ.

I've been wanting to something similar. I wanted actually to basically do the same thing as vidgame.net of taking pictures of every console, controller, etc and show what everything came with and how the games were.

The only problem is that typically one person won't have everything of interest. :)

I would love to have a vidgame.net style wiki. I support that idea wholeheartedly.

Hopefully Joe will see this.

There used to a be a section here like that, I believe it was called the Knowledge Base. It got taken down for some reason.

Some of what you seek might be located in the Library. The link is on the left pane of the site, and within the library there is a section labelled Tech Docs.

The fella who did it (Jibbajabba) stopped coming around. It was a really cool project and he did a nice job with it...no one else picked it up. If enough people wanted to work on it I'm sure we could bring it back, the work is a bit much for one person.

The problem with that is that overall, there is not that much info in the Tech Docs. Plus, it's not something that people can contribute to without having to funnel the info through Joe or whoever runs that part of the site.
A wiki would allow for more community interaction and would lessen the workload on a single person.

Although Achi took vidgame down, we still have everything intact. Once we get past our garage sale (if ever, the way things are going), I'm going to talk again to Marriot_Guy about getting everything put on his site. Things have been busier recently but they will calm down (hopefully) shortly. We also wouldn't be against supplying that info to support a wiki-type deal as well.

Sweet, nice to hear from someone that worked at Vidgame. Great to know that the info is still intact, I personally found your site to be quite useful.

Well, I wouldn't say I worked on it all, Achi is my wife. :P
Her main beef was people would rip off her images and photoshop off the watermark(s). If anyone has any way to further protect her images, it'd be appreciated. Even the Angry Video Game Nerf ripped off her CD-i pic for his CD-i review.

http://www.gamesx.com/ and the GameSX Wiki http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php have a lot of info on video pinouts/mods, controller pinouts and the like.

I wish I knew, I could search though. If you guys decide to revive Vidgame, maybe try a Wiki format?
