I can't believe this game doesn't have its own thread yet (until now, anyway)! I've been playing it constantly since it came out on PSN last week. IMO it's the best update of Arkanoid/Breakout ever, and that's saying something given how many clones and sequels have been made. It plays like classic Arkanoid/Breakout with some major gameplay mechanics addded. With wind power you can push and pull the ball while it's moving thus affecting its trajectory. You can also use two different special abilities when your power meter is charged; a shield for your paddle so you can absorb stray brings floating toward you and a big machine gun bullet spread type attack...thing. Oh, and the music is great too. Nice graphics also. Plus, it's only $8! Buy it, play it, love it.

In spite of an admittedly small "publicity effort" by developer Sidhe, Shatter (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shatter/) has sold quite well on the PlayStation Network so far, with one week sales of around 30,000. Critics (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/shatter) have been quite nice to Shatter's modern re-imagining of the classic Breakout formula, praising its "clever game mechanics" and "incredible original soundtrack (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/07/25/shatter-soundtrack-available-for-a-minimum-of-9-99/)." It's the type of game that warrants a playable demo -- and that's exactly what Sidhe is working on now. "We will be making a demo available down the line for those gamers on the fence," managing director Mario Wynands told Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24727).

Further down the line, Sidhe is looking into porting Shatter onto other platforms. "Shatter is not exclusive to PSN," Wynands stated. "But Sony is offering the combination of good royalties, strong technology, and a well defined process for getting content to market."

Already, the team has "working builds" of Shatter on PC and XBLA, thanks to the cross-platform functionality of Sony's free PhyreEngine (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/shatter-developer-talks-up-benefits-of-phyreengine/). Wynands says the team is "reviewing the situation to see whether it makes sense to continue investing in those versions," but also admits that a cross-platform release is "likely." That's a good thing too. We'd love to see Shatter end up in as many hands as possible.http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif (http://www.joystiq.com)Shatter demo in the works, multiplatform release 'likely' (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/shatter-demo-in-the-works-multiplatform-release-likely/) originally appeared on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com) on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. You know why, servbot?

1) it's 7.99

2) it's a really good variation of Arkanoid/Breakout

Armed with that info, the consumer can make a reasonable decision whether to purchase w/out a demo. Unlike the many anonymous, too expensive games on PSN/WiiWare.
