Downloaded this yesterday and I must say that I'm pretty impressed.
While I can completely "feel" the potential for the entire game to be just a near miss of a AAA title, I think that if the complete game consists of little more than what the demo has to offer - and all reports point to there being plenty more than what's available in the demo - that this could easily be the best modern/3D Batman game to date if not ever.
While the Unreal Engine can tend to make even the most detailed elements seem "floaty"/lifeless IMO, it looks like the developers spent a lot of time on the lighting, detail and physics and it's very pretty to look at even if I'm not partial/never have been partial to Jim Lee's designs.
The hand to hand combat/free-flow combat has a great feel to it and the collision detection seems right for the most part. And while you don't get to do too much detective gadget stuff in the demo - the stealth aspect of the game seems to be as close to living those "Batman" where did he come from/where did he go moments of the comic/animated series/film.
The voice-over work from the cast of the animated series (Conroy, Hamill and Sorkin) sound great and I can only imagine that Paul Dini (arguably the best writer the show ever had) has penned a great script for the game.
If the reviews aren't absolutely brutal I might pick this one up at launch ... even if it's just a B+ I really liked what I saw/experienced with the demo.
Anybody else try it out??
**EDIT - REVIEW**
I just finished the main story mode and got 100% of all of the Riddler goals.
This was easily one of my favorite 1-player action/adventure games of 2009, right up there with Bionic Commando and Ghostbusters.
The level of rich polish doesn't falter at any point in the production, from start to finish and top to bottom, Rocksteady poured their heart and soul into this one, and it shows. The amount of "content" in there for hardcore Batman fans is outstanding. It's 100% fan service.
The graphics are outstanding, so much so that even though I wasn't crazy about the character designs, it didn't detract at all from feeling like I was really living/enjoying the Batman experience.
The persistent world of Arkham Island was beautiful, big enough to not feel like a "video-game-ized" version of a real version of Arkham, and not SO big that the frequent back-tracking ever felt tiresome.
The classic gaming convention of the "tease" of showing areas and items that you can't get to very early in the game played out well, as each time you got a new bat-gadget or upgrade there always seemed to be some of those previously teased areas nearby, and plenty to back-track to.
The combat system and Batman's gadgets were all absolutely perfect. This is exactly what we've seen in the comics, movies and animated series'. Nothing felt shoe-horned for the sake of making a Batman game "work".
If I do have a single gripe about the entire experience it would be the brevity and ... I hate to say ease of the final showdown with the Joker. Boss battles in general aren't too challenging for any experienced gamer (on normal anyway) ... so I suppose all things considered, the final boss battle was about as challenging as any of the others in the game. And even that didn't make me feel dissatisfied with the total package.
I'm just now beginning to do the Batman and Joker "challenge modes" (bite-sized combat and stealth challenges) which, so far seem to be really fun.
I see that the ticker message that runs on the title screen says that new downloadable content will be available in 10 days ... with this game being constructed using the Unreal engine, I'd like to see a DLC multiplayer mode in the future, something along the lines of Mercs vs Spies in Splinter Cell with one player taking control of Batman and the others handling thugs in a cat/mouse type objective based gameplay. I'm not sure if that could be a reality ... but I also don't see why not. I'm sure this game is selling/will sell enough to make that happen, if not as DLC, then in the sequel.
So. All in all a pretty amazing game considering that it's a super-hero affair. It's fairly short if you just go through the story mode, but the Riddler goals and "challenge modes" make for some extended value.
If you haven't at least chekced out the demo, what the heck are you waiting for??

I loved it, there was only one negative that really stood out for me. The game starts out with these awesomely animated scenes, you beat up some dudes, then go into a room where it has an "in-game scene" that looks very awkward.
Other than that, I'm sure the full game will be great.

I've played it through multiple times. I liked the free flow combat, counters and all. I just hope fighting becomes more hectic and challenging in the full game. Detective mode is very useful, as you can see enemies through walls and such. It almost feels too good of a resource if you have it on most of the time.
I really enjoyed the attention to detail they gave to the game, specifically the bios on the characters you meet in the game. I got a kick out of finding the Riddler's cell with all the green question marks on the walls. There's a bonus Riddler bio pickup in the other ventilation duct in the electric chair room, but I haven't had the chance to check out his bio.
Overall color me impressed. I'll reserve a copy and eagerly await the game's release.

I've only played the demo at a PS3 Gamestop kiosk and I have to agree, the free-flow combat was a lot of fun. Don't know how repetitious it could get but getting into an ass-kicking rhythm didn't seem to get old for me.
This released on both 360 and PS3?

PS360 and PC as well I think. PS3 is the only one with the playable joker DLC, though.
Make sure that if you preorder it you get it at Amazon and use the 5OFFARKM code. 47.99 with free shipping available.

The reason I didn't like batman rise of sin zu . Was the repetative boreing combat. I am all for beating up thugs but give me some diversity. I was like how many goons do I have to beatup to go 2 blocks. Batman is so much more. I played the demo it did look good to me.

I'm downloading the demo now. I should have just played it at Best Buy when I had the chance a few weeks ago.
I played the demo for a few minutes this morning and found it very enjoyable, it's nice to finally not be confined to just that one room anymore. This demo, much like the demo released in retail a few months ago, seemed to spring out of nowhere and I welcomed it wholeheartedly. I'm glad to see that most of the original voice actors came back, I am a bit disappointed that Gordon's voice has changed, but I know I'll quickly get over it.
I pre-ordered this game months ago at Game Stop (mainly for the Batarang) and was pissed when the game got delayed, now it's only a few weeks away and the wait is killing me.

I'm a Batman fan and this game is easily the best Batman game I've played. I'm definitely getting this, but as cheap as I am, I'm going to wait until the price drops. I've got plenty of other games to play.
Other than that. The demo is great. I'm usually not a fan of sneaking, etc, however in Arkham Asylum when you use detective mode, it honestly makes me enjoy it a bit because you can plan what you're going to do in order to get by and knock them out. Unlike an MGS game where you have to wait for up to minutes at a time to make sure you know the enemies patterns and then sneak by.
The standard combat isn't "too great." As it seems it'll get repetitive, but it's still fun. The entire game captures the role of Batman perfectly. I hope the game does well enough for them to work on another Batman game, from just playing the demo I can tell it'll be that good to deserve another release.

Don't forget the NES Batman and Return of the Joker. Also Batman Returns for SNES only(NES version is boring.) If I had to pick between Batman Returns pretty much any standard Final Fight type beat em up, I'd pick Batman Returns.
One flaw on the NES Batman is that they're inconsistent with their Joker. Every picture of Joker shows each version of him prior to the release of the game. But maybe they did that to honor the entire series and not just a single Batman. Or I think they showed them all. Maybe just a few.

yeah, but it's been like 17 years since a good one, and I don't really count lego Batman, because, while it's good, they had already perfected the lego style, they just had to slap at bats skin on it.

Kevin Conroy was the one who did the animated series and he sounds just alike. I used to watch the animated series all the time. Everyone on the demo, Harley, Joker, and Batman sound alike. Gordon, like someone else mentioned, didn't sound like the series(perhaps it's not the same person.)

It's not, but the other 3 are the same. Mark Hamill says that the Joker voice hurts now, so this will probably be the last hurrah for the Mark Hamill Joker.

Yeah he announced recently that he wants to retire the Joker voice, which is pretty depressing since he's been doing it for almost 20 years now and a lot of us grew up hearing it. I'm sure if they threw enough money at him for a sequel he'll do it, or at least do a cameo role, but as for now he's done.
At least we know he had a blast doing it one last time, which just makes this game even more special, it's the last time this Joker will come out to play.

I have to admit this demo was lots of fun. Sneaking up on mofos and hanging them upside down from the ceiling never gets old. Hopefully they can incorporate enough variety to keep the gaming experience fresh and innovative thru out the entire game.
Figured I'd bump this up instead of starting an entirely new thread and figured this is the better place to discuss the game than the CE Sucks thread. I'm guessing that everyone who's got it is too busy playing it say anything, but damn am I in love with this game. Not only is it the first great Batman game to come out in years, it's probably my favorite game this generation. Needless to say, work went extra slow today as I eagerly waited to get home and play the game.
Gotta love doing the Riddler challenges, I keep on getting distracted by them most of the time and delay progressing in the game until I figure them out.

I was thinking whether I finish the backlog of games I have or picking this up for $48. Today I made my decision to pick it up at Amazon for $48 and realized the day it was when I went to do it.
Sucks, but looks like I'm going to have to wait quite some time to play this. I don't want to spend full MSRP on any game nowdays. I'm sure Arkham Asylum would be one that's worth it. I loved the demo, easily played it 20+ times. I'll talk about the game in 8 months once the price drops and I can finally grab it :P.

As much as I'm digging this game (shocking how well it came together within its development cycle) does anybody else feel that it's kind of uncomfortably on the fence somewhere between sandbox and linear gameplay?
Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that I can dilly-dally around in areas as long as I'd like to, or back-track to other areas of the asylum over and over ...
... maybe it's just the combination of my gaming completest OCD (need to complete all challenges per level before moving on) and the fact that it has been SO long since I've played an action game where they set up areas that you're totally aware of (destructible walls, vents, etc.) in the earliest stages of the game, that you can't access without sufficient upgrades obtained/upgraded in the later stages of the game that has me on edge.

This is why I'm loving this game so much, there hasn't really been a game like Arkham this generation and it's a nice change of pace compared to all the FPS games that have rolled out. I'm sure that the game being delayed only helped it's development as well, since they seemed to really have gone all out in making this. Hopefully this will change the standards to not only super hero games, but action games in general.

Yeah, I'm about 15 percent in and even though I now have a grapple that can pull down gratings that are high above the ground, I'm still coming across things that I can't "get through" (electric gates, break-able walls that are one level above the ground, etc.) ...
... while they're not detracting from my enjoyment of the game they're driving my completest OCD nuts!!
The last time I remember having to back-track with new obtained in-game items to get all the "stuff" so much was the Ape Escape series!

Well I'm about half way through and I'm still finding plenty of areas that I can't get to, the riddles are also getting increasingly harder. They get a little easier when you find the riddle map for the area, but I seem to only find those by accident. Still, these riddle challenges were a great addition to the game on Rocksteady's part, it just wouldn't be the same game without them.

Someone on Craigslist has this game for sale saying he beat it in one day. Is this game really that short?
It all really depends on how fast you play through the game, I got the game Tuesday night, played it for two full nights and I'm just now getting towards the end of the game. A buddy of mine got it the same night and he just beat it last night. The only reason that I didn't beat the game by now was because I chose to do the riddle challenges, otherwise I'm sure I would have beaten the game last night as well.
The game can be beaten in one sitting if one chooses to sit there all day to beat it, otherwise the average person will beat it within a few days.

This game is being hailed by Game Informer as the best Batman game ever. And most other places have given it good reviews as well.
I just beat the game and minus the disappointing final fight, it exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't say it's the best game ever (that would probably have to go to Super Metroid for me), but it's definitely going on my favorite game list. I played some of the challenge maps and I have to say, it's hella fun playing as the Joker. Then again I always did root for the bad guys when I was younger, so playing as one of the ultimate bad guys is like living a childhood dream of mine.
As for some kind of a quick review:
If you're a Batman fan: Get the game.
If you like Action/Adventure games: Get the game.
There's really a lot in the game that everyone will enjoy and while this will go on some peoples "over-hyped" list in the near future, I still have to say that it's one of the best games this generation. The story is pretty damn good, the game is well balanced with enough fighting to please the action crowd and the riddles provide enough exploring for those who want to just take a minute to look around. The challenge maps should help give the game a little more life, since there are plenty of them to start with (especially if you got the game at Gamestop) and there are plenty more to unlock during throughout the game.
This is a living and breathing Batman comic here folks, it's a fine damn game that's well deserving of it's hype.
Overall: 9.5 out of 10

I just finished it as well. Right now I'm clearing out the Riddler trophies. I like how after you finish the game you can explore the island at your leisure. Speaking of which I got scared by one of the escaped mental patients, who jumped at me while I was slowly moving around outside looking for trophies. I totally didn't know there were some enemies around, minus the joker teeth.
Man I can't get over how awesome the Scarecrow was in this game. The last two encounters were nuts. I almost thought my 360 was on the fritz at one point(those who played that part will know what I'm talking about). The last two fights were kinda lame, compared to all the other ones in the game. I'd like them to do a sequel, but I'm not sure how that would work out. The only way I see them topping Arkham Asylum is to make a game set in Gotham City.

Prior to the success of this product Eidos has been circling the crapper.
I'm sure if they had more disposable income when they started the project we'd see PSP/DS versions of the game, but in this case they smartly focused their development muscle on getting it right on the powerhouse current-gen systems.
I bet if we get a sequel that it'll show up on a wider variety of platforms.

I think since I've finished the game, got 100% of the Riddler's questions, most of the challenges complete and still having fun with atleast 30% of hard mode completed with 35% of the trophies being picked up along the way, I'll do a review(since I just completed it I happen to remember where alot of the harder ones were.)
First off. There are some people bashing it, mostly on this board, saying it's only doing well because of the recent Batman films. Now yes, Batman Begins and Dark Knight are amazing, but they're similar, but sort of a more realistic take on Gotham, where as the game draws mostly on the original Batman work as well as the cartoons(obviously with the voices.) It might be because alot of people like the movies that got them "interested" but thinking how good the game is just because of the movies is just bashing the game because you want a reason to be different.
Now let's look at the gameplay. If this game wasn't Batman and all the characters were taken from some game that's similar, such as Syphon Filter for example. Would the game still have great gameplay? Definitely.
The combat system is simple for a beginner(not to mention there's an Easy mode if Normal is too hard for you,) but it's definitely rewarding if you're a bit more proficient. You hit the square button to attack, x twice to evade, o to stun an enemy with your cape, triangle to counter, and L1+R1 to use whatever item. However, they have sort of quick actions. Instead of holding L1 then pressing R1, tap L1 to throw a batarang or when you get it, double tap R2 for the batclaw. After a combo of three hits enemies stay down after a single hit and you have to fight a bit strategically to keep the hits flowing.
Getting a higher combo value as well as stringing as many different attacks into a combo at one time will earn you combo exp as well as combo variation exp. This exp which you can also acquire each riddle that you solve can be used to upgrade Batman's attacks. Can't upgrade too much, but it helps with both his stealth and his combat depending on what you choose. I'd suggest never upgrading Batman's batarang to keep enemies down longer because when using combo batarang it'll just end up giving you more room to mess up(you can fix this by evading once if everyone gets knocked down, but it makes more of a chance you'll screw up.)
As for Arkham Island. It's extremely detailed. Amazing looking. There's parts in the game that are sealed off doors that can't be entered and such, but the majority of the island has no boundaries. Several places you're never needed to even go around have riddles and trophies to be solved and collected, giving a reason to search the landscape.
Storyline is good. They went very far into keeping the characters true to themselves. I personally thought that even the ending was good, though I didn't like the battle much as it wasn't really great just like everyone else mentioned. Also, for any fan of Batman there are tons of secrets in the game referencing to other villians that you don't specifically see in the game, even if you don't know much about Batman but the movies, or if you happen to have watched the animated series, or finally if you're really big on the comics which hold some of the more lesser known for those who haven't read them all or even most of them(a few I don't know of at all.)
When the game is completed. Try hard mode. Even after beating the game, I'm still enjoying going through it a second time. The riddles should be easier to find, even those super hard ones if you took the time to find them all, and while enemies are strong, take more hits, attack more often, and this time don't show a sensor when they're attacking, it's actually more fun than normal. I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed hard when I first started, but after getting really used to it, hard is more enjoyable.
Last are extras. The challenges, which I've still yet to play as Joker, but not everyone has the PS3 version so that really doesn't matter if I leave that out for now, and also the character info(which is just the characters you've unlocked to read about.)
The challenges will vary, depending on how much you like the combat system and the stealth system. The battle challenges are basically you against a bunch of thugs in a set of rounds. Stringing a long combo with as many attacks as possible, as well as not getting hit, well end up getting you the most points, while stringing together a combo that doesn't end to finish off the battle will get you even more points. Mainly it's just to see how you rank against everyone else, but it's atleast fun to see if you can beat your previous ranking. The stealth challenges are the most fun as there are certain requirements that you must take down the enemies in as well as taking them out in as much time as you want(which these are easy as you can take as long as you want, even if you'll get a bad ranking for being so slow at it.)
I'd say Batman Arkham Asylum is easily worth the money I threw down on it and one of the best games for this generation. The game definitely has no trouble with balancing issues as it's hard enough for gamers who are good at games to actually enjoy alot, but pretty easy, for those who aren't too great at video games to have a great time with as well.
This is also the only game in quite some time that I played through and completed 100% of the main game in two days(which that rarely happens anymore.)
*edit*
Yeah. Though I like the game. I didn't mention what I didn't like about it. That's the boss fights are almost all the same except one boss you fight multiple times as a "situation" rather than a fight and Poison Ivy.
For those who have beaten the game though or those who don't like spoilers. Highlight below. *Spoilers*
The Scarecrow. He definitely had the best parts in the game. The first part you see him was actually pretty creepy, which I also ended up jumping when opening that last body bag in the Morgue.
The second part I just about flipped out when it had that VCR type thing when a tape is at the very end. I honestly thought the game froze and my PS3 messed up or something. Then it ended up resetting and I thought that the game screwed up. Then when Joker was actually taking Batman to the Asylum and it was the same thing just the other way around. It was awesome. When Joker shoots Batman in the face, I actually didn't know you could move Batman's head until it said that you could and for you to either Retry or Exit, so I hit Retry and Batman punched out of the ground. I'm not sure if you could actually dodge the bullet but regardless if you can't, it's still kindof cool they made you think that happened.
The last thing is that the Scarecrow's boss battles play sortof like a platformer. I thought this was pretty unique. I already loved the setting and the story parts with him, so adding a new bit of gameplay definitely made it my favorite boss in the game.
*end spoilers..* Well. End of the edit too :P

Purchased yesterday. Game is great so far. Good mix of combat and stealth. Combat is very simple yet fun. This is exactly what a Batman game should be.

Well. Looks like I got my first platinum trophy. Weird thing about the game is that there is only one gold trophy in the game, even though the names of two silver trophies are "Predator Gold" and "Freeflow Gold?" Can't remember the other name is guessing. I don't really care about trophies, but seeing as I really like this game and it's easily one of my favorites, I wanted to completely finish every bit of it.
