Club Rules

01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

This week we've got an extremely obscure Data East shooter called ShootOut. This is a tricky game, because the controls take a while to get used to, but once you do they are pretty responsive, although still not very accurate.

Here's the official site, with a quick video of the game. The video though is just the attract mode.

Great game! I have to disagree that the controls take getting used to because they are pretty simple and straight forward (8 way joystick, jump button, fire button). I think that the issue with most people is the perspective of the game. I never had a problem with the perspective and the perspective is what actually got me loving the game in the arcades when I was a kid. I have beaten this game many times in MAME but I never did in the arcades because it get's HARD in the later stages (you can't stand still for more than a second without getting shot or hit by something). In all though it is very fun to play and I think the majority of gamers will enjoy this diamond in the rough.

I really appreciated the fact that there was a training mode included in the game. A couple runs through that REALLY helped me get the hang of it.

I don't think that it's that the controls are complicated, it's just really hard to aim. It took me about 10 tries to get to the second level. I thought the second level was much easier but I don't know if it's just because I had more practice by then. Level three though, that guy in the manhole kept getting me. How do you shoot him?

Press the direction you aiming at him (depending where you are standing) and down. He will crouch down and shoot.

I figured you had to crouch to get him but he always managed to shoot me first so I never got it to work.

Kind of quiet in the thread this week. I'm probably partly to blame, since I was gone most of the weekend, and didn't have a chance to play much.

Anyway, I still have a decent list of titles to choose from next week, but am always interested in more nominations. Anyone have anything new and exciting, or old and forgotten, to add?

Shoot Out's a cute little game. For some reason the diagonal shooting reminded me of Laser Blast from the Atari 2600. It took a while to get the shooting angles down, but it was kind of fun.

Got done playing it a little while ago, and only got to the Subway stage. The aiming definitely does take some getting used to. I never did get the shoot dodge technique down, so I died a lot. After eating lead a lot I began to notice there are patterns the the enemies like to follow, so you can memorize where most of the bad guys are going to be. Anyway a unique third person take, on what could have been a basic light gun game.

I actually discovered this game for myself a few weeks ago when looking up PCB prices - I didn't get past the training though, because I was expecting the cursor to work Cabal-style). I quit before the actual stage. This time I figured it out easily, including the all-important down+left or right combo.

I also only got to the subway stage after half a dozen plays or so, and I'm 10K short of first place (hitting the roller coaster a third time should've done it).

There are some cool bonuses here and they don't repeat every time - for example, hitting the flowerpot in the first stage wins 1400 points (IIRC). Some things you have to time carefully, like the red light in the first stage, and other things you just blast as fast as you can (the car in the first stage is a good example). I like how the stop light keeps you "centered" scoring points continuously if nothing else is onscreen.

It reminds me a lot of Cabal, which actually turned out to be a stumbling block the first time I played. That said, it's very easy to play and fun.

I think I'll be looking for this PCB now. It'll be a lot easier to set up than a Cabal would on my supergun due to the standard eight-way joystick, which is a plus.

No, it's not turning into the Monday Maybe MAME Club... I just forgot that today was Monday (this is the downside of not working boys and girls, days of the week don't really matter much).

I have to run right now, but I'll be back around 10-10:30 PM and will post this week's thread then.

Sorry again for the stupidity.
