So I went to visit my parents in the small town where they live about 80 miles north of Phoenix this weekend. While rummaging through a couple thrift stores up there I came across some systems I don't usually see in the wild.

I stopped at Goodwill and of course headed right for the glass cases and found a 3DO with a plastic bag on top holding its cords, controller and three boxed games. The price was $140 which seemed pretty high but then again, I don't really know what these systems are worth. I passed but next Saturday is half off day...

Also, on the shelf above it, there was an Atari Lynx inside it's little portable bag. The tag said $150 and also mentioned that it "needs work". My wife asked what it was and as I was explaining it to her, the middle aged guy next to me ran and got a sales clerk and asked to look at it. She pulled it out and started to hand it to me (I guess since I was at the front of the case) and he snatched it out of her hands before she could... not that I wanted it, just seemed kind of funny. He brought it over to an outlet to test it out and after fiddling with it for awhile he brought it up to the counter and paid.

Next, we checked out an independent thrift store which had some cool and older stuff but nothing specific really stood out to me. As I passed a pile of old alarm clocks, I saw this grey device that kind of looked like a CD player without speakers. I picked it up and looked it over for a few seconds but then tossed it back into the pile.

It kind of stuck with me, though... I started wondering if it was a Philips Cd-i and after googling a picture I realized it was. I didn't see a price but I'm assuming it was cheap since it was in a pile of alarm clocks. It didn't have cords, controllers or games with it, though.

I usually don't collect "newer" systems so I don't really know the value of these items... can anyone help?

$140 for a 3D0 is way overpriced $70 would be half-decent if it came with some games, $150 is WAY overpriced for a Lynx, and the CD-i is a piece of junk unless you want to play Hotel Mario, or one of the Legend of Zelda games, which will cost you at least $50 each for those games.

Pass on all three.

oh no, i wasn't ever considering buying the lynx or 3do at that price... i guess i wanted confirmation that my thoughts of those two being insanely over priced was accurate, haha.

i mean, if the cd-i was only a few bucks i'd get it. i pretty much buy any system i don't have but the newer ones i only get if it's a great deal, as i know i wouldn't use it much.

thanks for the info...

If you decide to go back and check out that CD-i, make sure to look very carefully at the back of it and see what kind of power adapter it takes. The Goldstar CD-i takes a very strange, proprietary power cord that baffles all who gaze at the slot where it should plug into. I purchased a Goldstar CD-i, bare, hoping that it took regular cords, but sadly, no. It has sat on my shelf ever since.

And you know that guy bought that Lynx just to put up on eBay, thinking he found himself some kind of super rare handheld that he wrongly thinks he'll make his money back on. Check eBay for the exact stuff you saw at the store, he's going to have a seriously high price on it.

3DO, Lynx, and Philips CD-i systems are considered 'newer' machines? I like the way you think!

As the self-proclaimed master of finding 3DO's in the wild, I have to inform you that not only is $140 for one of them a rip-off, but it's also more than what I paid for the three that are currently sitting in my room. Same thing for the Lynx. Although it isn't super common in the wild, $150 is overkill......by about $120.

I paid $36 shipped for my 3DO and a bunch of disc only games. :D

Were you up in the Prescott area? I like to walk the city square and hit the mom-n-pop stores when we make a trip that way. There is a Salvation Army just off the square that usually has some good deals and another variety/thrift that is huge not far from the SA. I usually find good deals up there. The flea market in Prescott is another great place to hit.
I need to make a trip up that way!

I think I paid $100 for my 3DO but it came with 15 or so games.

yeah, it was in prescott... we checked out the antique stores around the court house but didn't find anything. we went to the swap meet in prescott valley but didn't get there until one and a lot of booths had already closed up for the day.

A Lynx for $150??? The guy deserved what he got for acting like that(deserved the deal, not the Lynx). I hope he does list it on eBay and loose money. LOL

I do agree that they are quite rare to see in the wild though but that doesn't mean their expensive. I've only seen one at a trift store once. I bought it for $20. I eventually got another off craigslist for $10. Both were boxed, the craigslist deal had a few games with it. I did get another off eBay for $15 I think, but it was broken. It was listed as such though, I just got it because it came with a bunch of games.
