I took apart two of my Genesis controllers to wash them when I found out why one controls much better than the other. The dpads are completely different.
Left="good" pad, Right="bad" pad

The controller on the left has the type of dpad that's on the 6-button controllers and Sega Saturn controllers (where the dpad and the white part "sandwiches" the casing). It controls much better than the one on the right, especially when hitting diagonals.
The "good" controller also has the case/buttons in matte black and has a textured feel, compared to the "bad" controller with it's glossy case/buttons and smooth feel.

I still don't understand how they could make the perfect D-Pad 20 years ago, but can't replicate the process today.
I hear so many things about how bad the new Street Fighter controllers are, why didn't they just copy an old Genesis six button?

LOL
This is interesting though, I didn't know that there are some 3 buttons floating around with that have the same D-pad as the 6 button.
I still don't see the point in using the old 3 button controller though. The 6 button controller is just better, from ergonomics to control. Well, in my opinion..
(And I mean the original 6 button, not the crap one that was released around the time of the Genesis 3.)

Yea I remember the 3 button pads got good around 93. I purchased a Genesis back in Oct. 93 and the pad with it was the type with the better revised thumb pad, so I was able to use it on stuff like Fatal Fury 1 and Mk 1 with no problems. Most of my friends who had Genesis decks bought the year prior had the older revision and had a harder time with them. In the end though, the original 6 button pad was tops, probably the best game pad I have ever used period.

The model numbers are exactly the same.
Sometimes I like using the 3-button controllers just because everything feels larger.

I love the 3 button controller!
I use it all the time, unless I need 6 buttons like street fighter.
I loooove how the genesis 3 button dpads feel. theyre all touchy! Great for Gaiares, and Contra 3

Well I've got a red button controller and it has a very bad d-pad and it's unlike both of the controllers you've posted.

I have one of those too. It's exactly the same as the "bad" pad in the original post except for the red highlights and different location for the "Trigger" and "A, B, C" text.

crap. that looks like my controller that I love dearly.
I better open it and see if its got a supposed bad-dpad.
What if I love the bad d-pads! Does that mean im defective?

Eh? They look different to me.
In the one I posted It's missing the metal ball in the center of the magnetic overlay and the underside of the d-pad has a small piece of plastic that's rounded at the end that sticks out a little that goes in works as the center point.

LOL Thats what I was thinking as well. I opened 2 of my favorite Genny controllers last night and found that one of them :gasp: did in fact have a bad D-pad. But I have always loved that controller.
Now I am going to have to have to play some games and see if which controller I find more responsive.

You're right; yet another variant. We'll call it the "early bad" one.
