Some awful video game store recently opened up here, right by all the pawn shops. You know the type. Zelda for $25, current games more expensive than Gamestop, person at cash register has to call her husband to answer your questions....

but right as you walk in there's a dedicated Rally-X for 150 bucks. Sideart is pretty well worn and it may or may not work....but would you consider this a decent buy for something I would restore and resell? Or have I lost my mind? Leaning towards the latter at the moment.

I'd say if it works, $150 isn't bad. But if it's dead, I wouldn't.

(Of course, remember who you're talking to here)

I've been hanging over at KLOV lately, and I've been scouring Craigslist for cabs myself. While $150 is a decent price, I wouldn't buy it with the intention of reselling immediately. I notice a lot of the same cabs on Craigslist week after week from $600-$2000 and up and the cheapskates over at KLOV hate spending much more than $400 on a cab.

If you do plan on trying to put a little money into it and fixing it up, don't do it with the intention of making some sort of great profit on it. You might end up sinking more money into than you expect by chasing down a problem, or replacing a hard to get part. If you have the extra money and think it would be nice to fuck with for a while as a hobby, I'd do it. There's the possibility that you'd find the right buyer and make a few hundred off of it- but just don't rely on it.

It's not a bad price if you want to keep it for a while, but it's not great if you want to fix it and flip it quickly. I don't think Rally X is a super hot game, but I may be wrong.

Is it this Rally X? (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9259)

If you scroll down to the bottom it appears there's a working one on ebay for $250 buy it now.

I know I wouldn't make a couple hundred. I do think it would be nice to fix up and fuck around with as a hobby. Always wanted to learn arcade restoration. I'd definitely be selling it though, only arcade machine I ever wanted was either a Neo Geo MVS or Capcom Bowling. Hell, I'd trade this machine for a Capcom Bowling.

Yes, it's that Rally-X. Not woodgrain though, more like the picture next to the description paragraph.

If it works go for it!

If it's as a hobby and to fuck around with for a while- then go for it. I'm ready to get a second one myself.

It can sometimes be either really rewarding, or really frustrating. I still have a problem on the one I bought a few months ago. Nevertheless, I've learned a lot about arcade repair in the past few months, and I think it's fun.

I'd try to get another $50 off if there's problems- but just make sure it's complete. Also, sometimes problems don't become apparent until after the machine has been turned on a while (FYI).

If it works, it's a very good deal. As for selling it later, you should be able to get the $150 back out of it when you go to sell it, but don't count on more than that even if you spend more on new parts (cap kit, CPO, etc.). Even if it's DOA, $150 isn't out of the question for a complete machine. At that point it's just a question of how much time and effort you want to put into fixing it up.

For whatever it's worth, I always liked Rally-X and havent ever really found a satisfactory re-implementation of it (Jakk's sticks, modernized remakes, etc...). Surprisingly, it doesn't even seem right in MAME, if I recall correctly.

I'd love a Rally-X, and assuming the game worked I'd get it at that price.

I won one on eBay for around $100 (sadly, the deal fell through and I never got the cabinet). I'd say $150 is definitely worth it if it works. It's probably worth it even if it doesn't work. Lots of Rally-X cabinets were painted over and converted to Pac/Ms-Pac cabs (Rally-X runs on a Pac PCB).

Unfortunately the price of Rally-X cabs has dropped since the release of the 48-in-1, which has New Rally-X (the sequel, which is very similar but with a different color scheme and slightly different flag issues).

Thanks for the responses. Got a tip that there may be a few other $150 cabs at the flea market this weekend....I think I'm saving my cash for something that beats Rally-X. For now anyway.

Actually, I'd do $150 even for a non-working, depending on the problem. But that would be my limit.

Bally/Midway machines are quite easy to fix, even with minimal electronics knowledge. Even the cabs are quite easy to restore (unless you buy a game where the sideart was stenciled on like Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, or Burgertime. Fortunately, Rally-X was two fairly small stickers.)

A dedicated Rally-X is now surprisingly hard to find since most were converted and/or destroyed.
