The big question when dealing with shmups is "horizontal or vertical?" What about the isometric ones? What are some good ones in that type? All I've ever played were these:

-Viewpoint
-Zaxxon

Desert Falcon is sort of one. Also don't forget that Zaxxon saw several sequels.

Some others include Future Spy, HATE, and Panther. The best of the bunch though is easily Blue Max.

Zaxxon only had one official sequel, Super Zaxxon.

Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 is a Viewpoint clone dubbed "Zaxxon" in name only and only for the US release. The 3D Zaxxon SMS game doesn't really qualify as a sequel as it's more of a retelling of the original with the 3D effect.

There was a game called Arcturus on the TI-99/4A, sort of a Zaxxon clone.

Would the Strike series count as isometric shmups?

I thought there was a semi-sequel to Viewpoint. I forget the name at the moment though.

Isolated Warrior (NES) is great.

They're games released by Sega with the title Zaxxon, they're as official as they get. They're no different than things like the Western release of Super Mario Bros. 2. :)

Anyways, it was obvious my point was just that there were further titles with the Zaxxon name that were isometric shooters, beyond the initial arcade release and the home ports it saw in the early 80s.

The Strike series doesn't count, you don't spend the entire time flying diagonally to the Northeast. The only thing isometric about it is how the graphics are displayed, it has no effect upon the gameplay.

Terrible, all of them, even (to a degree) Isolated Warrior and Zen: Intergalactic Ninja (on the NES, the GB game is a sidescroller).

No sequel to Viewpoint, though it has that PlayStation port with an added "enhanced" mode.

I think that Motherbase (Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 here in the US) was the unofficial sequel I'm thinking about. I read that somewhere, I just need to find where.

Blue Max for the Atari 8-bit is isometric like Zaxxon (did this come out on other systems?)

Yes, there's a C64 version. The sequel Blue Max 2001 made the odd choice to reverse the isometric scroll so it goes from top left to bottom right!

There's also Leviathan and Sigma Seven on the C64 that I can think of that use isometric perspective. Hmm... there's a 3D Skramble game too I'm sure that does.
