View Full Version : Must have N64 Games (that aren't on Wii VC)

I'll be getting an N64 again (had one long ago but swapped it for some Coco 3 stuff), and I'm wondering what games to get. Yes I know about Mario 64, Paper Mario, Smash Bros, etc. but the problem is that I have all those on my Wii via Virtual Console. So I guess my real question is what are the must have N64 games that AREN'T on the Wii VC or can't be played properly due to the controller layout (I'm looking at you Sin and Punishment)? My guess is that this is going to be a small list because most of the best N64 games were 1st party and Nintendo will undoubtedly release them all at one point.
The first one that comes to mind is Ogre Battle 64, Shadowgate 64, and maybe one of the two Castlevania games (although I hear they kind of sucked). I'd like Indiana Jones, but that one is a bit too pricey. Any other suggestions? I generally like RPGs (good luck with the on the N64) and Adventure type games.

-Any Rareware game. Period.
-Turok 2
-Super Smash Bros. (though that may be coming out sometime)
Also, if we're discussing playing games "properly", a lot of N64 games don't play properly on N64. No rumble, sound glitches in Yoshi's Story, altered graphics in Star Fox 64, and no stadium screen on Mario Kart 64.

The japanese only version of Bomberman 64 - it's arguably the best version of Bomberman.

1. Tetrisphere (I LOVE this game)
2. Blast Corps
3. Pilotwings 64 (have no idea why this is not on the VC yet)
4. Killer Instinct Gold (many people don't like this version but it's fun regardless)
5. Goldeneye
6. Perfect Dark
7. Jet Force Jemeni
8. Mario Party 1, 2, 3 (the wife and I love these and are a blast with friends. Worst 1 player game ever though).
9. Mission Impossible
10. Pokemon Puzzle League (don't have to be a kid to love this game)
11. Resident Evil 2 (if you haven't played it yet on another system)
12. Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire
13. Tony Hawk 1, 2, 3
14. Wetrix
15. Worms Armageddon
This list should keep you busy for a while:)

Mystical Ninja starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure. I wish Konami would put them on the VC, since it seems it would be cheaper to get them on there than picking up the actual carts.

Banjo-Kazooie (Better than Super Mario 64 IMO)
Golden Eye
Turok 2
Pokemon Stadium
Mischief Makers
Superman 64 ;D

All the really good games were already listed, the other ones I could think of all come on the PSX except the wrestling games.
-Nightmare Creatures
-Mega Man 64
-Forsaken
-Southpark
-WWF No Mercy
-WWF Wrestlemania 2000
-WCW Revenge
Also, already listed, but I'd like to Ogre Battle 64, Jet Force Gemini, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Castlevania, and Castlevania Legacy of Darkness are some of my favorite N64 games(there's not that many I actually like for the system :P.)
How you noted Castlevania on 64, it's either a love it or hate it, which I can't really understand as you have all these people that love the terrible, extremely small staged, collectathon game like Mario 64, and the only problem with CV64 is the camera(just like Mario 64.) Anyways. The CV64 camera is worlds better than the awful Mario 64 camera, though it's still not too great. The game has huge stages, lots of good bosses, quite a bit of platforming that actually works well for how the camera controls. I love both CV64 and CVLoD as they're altogether great games.

Superman 64 should be free. Scratch that, you should receive 1000 Wii Points for downloading it.

This bit always confused me. Is LoD a remake of CV64, a sequel, or a prequel? From what I've seen it sort of looks like a remake with a different story line.

When I was much younger, I used to enjoy flying around on Superman 64 in the practice mode, it was kinda fun in a really pointless way... well, for about 5 minutes.

I've never played it but with the different storyline (takes place 8 years before CV64), the addition of new characters and weapons-you could almost count it as a prequel running on the same engine.
As for suggestions, people pretty much hit the biggies. Here's some I can recommend:
Space Station Silicon Valley (though it can't be played with the memory expansion installed)
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
New Tetris
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer (use two controllers to pilot your pod racer)
Body Harvest
Excitebike 64
F-Zero X

LoD is kind of like a "Special Edition" of the original CV64. They added 2 new characters with their own story, some new levels, bosses, music and the original levels sorta have slightly different layouts. Also added expansion pak support to clean up the graphics but honestly it slows the game down but, thankfully you can turn the option off.

So is it worth tracking down Castlevania 64 or just LoD?

If you're going to get just one of them get LoD.

I'd say LoD also. Technically it's both a prequel and the same game in one. You start the game off by playing Cornell, but you also get Henry Oldrey, Reinhardt Schneider, and Carrie Fernandez.
Mid game you actually have to escort Henry as a kid throughout the maze. After finishing the game you get him as a Knight with a gun, basically grown up. You get Reinhardt and Carrie by acquiring the kids and beating the game with him. Which with Reinhardt and Carrie, when it says that they go back eight years in time where they risked their lives, it's Cornell that they're talking about. Cornell defeating Dracula in 1844, and then eight years later in 1852, Reinhardt and Carrie defeating him.

Yes!
I'd also would have to reccomend Castlevania LoD, and many others already mentioned.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Rayman 2: The Great Escape. Awesome game.
Other games that haven't been mentioned yet:
007: The World Is Not Enough
Beetle Adventure Racing
Bust-A-Move '99
Ridge Racer 64
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
Stunt Racer 64
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (to me, this is by far the best Turok game)
I also second Mischief Makers, the two Castlevania games, and the two Goemon/Mystical Ninja games, especially Goemon's Great Adventure.
Just as a reference, here's a list I compiled last year:

Well Perfect Dark and Goldeneye should be on that list. Perfect Dark will never make it to VC(because Microsoft owns it) and Goldeneye actually could have made it to VC but Nintendo screwed up the deal between Microsft, Activision and MGM.

-Turok 2
I definitely didn't give it a fair shot, but I played the first level of this game in my expansion-equipped N64 and found it to be slow, choppy and frankly boring. I'm very interested to hear why it's worth my time to continue.

That's on VC though.
It is? Dang...sorry. I kinda rattled off-the-cuff and I haven't paid attention to VC for some time. Though to be honest, the N64 controller is the best way to control F-Zero X as it's more precise than the Classic Controller.

San Francisco Rush and Rush 2 were my favorite N64 racers, and I don't think either is on VC. I also recommend WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and/or WWF No Mercy, which are the best wrestling games ever made IMO.

Yeah San Francisco Rush is a fun game, but you really should play with the cheat menu to get full use out of it. You can turn time limits off and make it so that when you crash you respawn where you crashed (vs. back on the track) This makes exploring the secret paths more fun. There are also two secret car Skateparks... The graphics were kind of fugly even when it came out, but we had a lot of fun with it.

Turok 2 = impressive graphics, but a boring, confusing game. I found Turok 3 to be a much better single-player game.

I disagree. Mickey's Speedway seemed so bland to me. The tracks were too barren. It had a higher frame rate than DKR, but overall, DKR is the more interesting, enjoyable game.

I agree. Turok 2 was a real step backwards from Turok, which is an awesome game. Very, very boring and quite convoluted at times. Never tried Turok 3 though, perhaps it's worth a shot if it improves Turok 2 even marginally.
As for the topic, Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh would be a good addition as the cartridge for this 64 game goes pretty high. Not sure if it's already been released though. Also I agree with the Bomberman 64 (Japan) Arcade Edition comment, it's an excellent game.

OH YES! Definitely. I was one of the people that used to hook up my N64 to my VCR and make my own fed. I made my TV shows and PPV's.
A LOT of people did that.
Also, as a testament to the awesomeness of No Mercy, there are communities of people that release hacks to upgrade the roster and make combination shows. My two favorites are TNA vs. ROH and WWE Summerslam.
Also, there are petitions to release the game on the VC with TONS of signatures.
There is a rumor floating around that they might release an updated version of No Mercy(with current arenas and stars like the Summerslam mod) for WiiWare. But, sadly at this point, it's just a rumor.

I say Blast Corps also. That game is really fun.
Beetle Adventure Racing is a good one too.
