"Top 5 best video game power-ups"

I was just looking on MSN.com earlier and came across this article.

1. Super Mario (Mario Bros.)
2. Power Pellets (Pac-Man)

4. On Fire (NBA Jam)
5. BulletBill (Mario Kart)

Opinions? What are your top 5?

I would have picked the feather or cape or a star-man over the Mushroom, but the rest seem pretty reasonable.

I would choose the shoe from Super Mario Bros. 3 as one of the best ones. Its so fun and basically makes you super powerful but so short lived.

Should we open the debate as to the difference between "power-up" and "secondary weapon?" (or can we say that a "secondary weapon, since it in theory boosts and attack, although not always, is a sort of power-up?) Or is that too nerdy?

Best power-up? Invincibility Star in Mario (and pretty much any other game)

Spread shot not a bad choice, although I view that and even the Rapid powerup as being just a normal item, not a temporary powerup like the Barrier.

The first thing that popped into my mind was the Contra Spread. Invincibility power ups not withstanding, that is my number 1. Star power is just about the lamest power up there is. Not a fan of MSNBC's "video gaming editor". He's a noobatron. (and I don't usually talk like that)

I have to agree with spread shot needing to be on there. Also in no real order - invisibility artifact from Doom, Super Sonic in Sonic 2, steroids in Duke Nukem 3D, remote bombs in Bomberman, homing missiles in Earthworm Jim Special Edition.

Badass powerup

After watching Dragon Ball Z obsessively from 2000-2003, I always wondered what came first: the Super Saiyan form or Super Sonic? When Goku(or any Saiyan) goes super saiyan, their hair turns yellow, their eyes turn green and they get much faster and stronger.....almost invincible. When Sonic turns Super Sonic, his hair turns yellow, he becomes much faster/stronger and is basically invincible for a limited amount of time. Coincidence? I think not.

As for power ups, I too like NBA Jam's "he's on fire" power-up(3 point shots from half court FTW) and Halo 3's active camo. I like sneaking up on people and beating them down from behind.

I gotta agree with this... Hammer Bros. suit was the best. Kuribo's shoe was pretty sweet as well, though.

If you get the star on mario kart on some of those levels it was basically game over. You could ease around the whole track in about 7 seconds.

Glad to see somebody mentioned Rise of the Triad, though I'd take God (or DOG!) Mode first. Although I think something's wrong in that vid too - I thought shrooms mode was supposed to be colorful...
