been out of gaming for a while. about six months now. fired up my 360 yesterday an she starts up like new. well. I sold my hdd a while back and now with all the games out i'm debating if i should buy a new hdd or just sell my system. actually i'm setup for wifi in my house. I like having my console in my room but I don't have any dsl in my room. so i'd need to spend about$200 on hdd/wifi adapter :( plus a $20 live card before buying my next game. that kind sucks. that's the price of a used ps3.

Anyway i ws considering selling my system and picking up a used ps3. ow with the ps3 price drop (299) approaching would preowned system prices drop? checked gamestop.com adn they have a used model for $220...not bad. though i prefer the clean looking 20 gb model with no chrome drive. strange thing is that the 60gb model is cheaper than the 20gb model preowned LOL.
could i even sell a hdd-less 360? what would gamestop give me for my system in credit? should i check the local pawn shops? how would their prices compare?

not a fanboy either console is fine with me.just trying to get set up again for gaming online. pretty much same games on both consoles. but for $220 i can get out of the box wifi, free online gaming, quiet console operation and blue ray. and the temerary joy and newishless of the ps3 exclusives what few thee are. (not a halo fan :))

so please drop some feedback my way community.

Pack up your 360, take it into gamestop and exchange it for a used PS3. I would recommend getting at least a newer 80gb model for lower power consumption and less heat.

A barebones 360 should at least get you $100.00 or more.

that doesnt sound like such a bad idea...

I might do the same...

I would think that gamestop would low ball you... I would also think that craigslist or kijiji would be your best bet...

then again, you might be able to trade your 360 with what ever games and stuff you might have for a PS3 at a pawn shop as pawn shops haggle better...

if I do this too, maybe I could convince my bro to swap his 360 for my PS3 when mass effect 2 comes out just so I could play it though...

ok sounds good. check out the gaemstop and pawn shop prices tomorrow. I do have a question about the psn vs xbox live. dose psn have younger more immature players? i'm 30 and like to play with/against 20-50 y rold players. can't really deal with 13 yr old trash talkers. are thre many 30+ gamers on psn?

anyway thanks for the head up on the 20 gb model. i think i'll go for the 40gb :) if i can convnice the local pawn guys that the 120gb ps3 is now 299 new maybe i can get them to come down on price. I'd love to pick up a ps3 for $150 lol

Thats 50/50... I would say yes because the 360 was more affordable for the last 3 years than the PS3 as a gaming machine, so parents would have opted for the cheaper unit...

however...

Maybe parents instead chose a PS3 because of the Blu-Ray option, which they could then use, and the child could play games too...

I own one and 3 of my good friends own PS3s as well, we arent 30 yet, but will be in 2-3 years =)

You'd be better off not selling your 360 at GameStop, I just checked the trade-in thread over at Cheap Ass Gamer, and they should a core system with a wireless controller will only get you $70 store credit ($60 w/ a wired controller), granted that price was as of last week, but if anything it probably would've only gone down.

I've actually been considering a PS3 now because of the price drop, I would have prefered a backward compatible unit, but what are you going to do?

ditch the 360!

I sold my XBox 360 for 300$ + some D&D books and got a 20gb PS3 for 299.99 and stuck a 250gb HD into it....

Haven't regretted it since.

or instead of $220, you could:

get a 20gb drive off ebay (beware the chinese knockoffs): $20
cat5 cable (50ft): $10
xbox live 12mo: $40

$70 will set you up for a year.

or you could sell the 360 and try to find a cheap ebay ps3 via a misspelling. amazes me how many people don't proofread their auctions. misspelled = doesn't show up in searches = cheap:)

There are people capable of misspelling "PS3"? O_O

some folks don't put ps3. they put playstation 3, but can't be arsed to spell it right, so you get paystation 3's and the like. mostly BIN-games, but sometimes a system pops up.

You had me seriously wondering there for a second. The full spelling of playstation simply didn't occur to me. More like the bad movie joke...
"Somebody call 911!"
"I got the phone... What's the number to 911?"
*audience groan*

If you can get the 60gb model go for it. I would stay away from the 40gb model (have one) they have bad Blu Ray drives. X_x

I'd say sell your 360. The slim is coming out and actually looks good, also small and light. It has less USB ports in the front, but all first party PS3 controllers are wireless.

Most of the best games are multiplatform. You won't have to bother paying to play games online every year, and from what you hear about PSN, the difference in online play on both systems isn't really noticable.

The only thing you're losing from selling your 360 is the ability to talk to people while playing different games, or sending voice messages to another persons inbox. You're also losing the ability to listen to your own music while playing a game. Both of these things Sony said they were going to add in later updates, which I've still been waiting for the first one because that's the one I'm mostly interested in.

Sony PS3 fourms and Tech support. I was told not all 40gb models but they had a bad batch of BD drives.

You can stick USB hubs in the ports and add more USB ports! It seems to work ok on my 20gb model, though it sure aint pretty having 3 controllers, a light gun w/ sensors, a card reader and a hub thingy dangling around the front.

Comparably, I had more fun with a few weeks of SF IV and Metal Gear Online than I did with a full year of Xbox live + chrome hounds halo and some others.

........though the 3 years of xbox live prior to that with Steel Battalion blow both ps3 and xbox 360's online experience away :-D

no voice messaging in mail on psn? I like that about live. so on psn there is no way to leave a voice message?

overall how would you guys compare live to psn?

If you are going to why hasn't anyone mentioned the 60gig system as it has the build in WiFi that the 20gig doesnt have.

It is the best for the backwards compatability, as it is done with hardware not emulation.

You've been out of gaming for 6 months........you should probably see what games each system has to offer before you decide to drop one. XB and PS both have a number of exclusives, so if I were you Id just save some cash and buy a PS3 when there is something you really want, unless none of the XB/XBL exclusives interest you.

I know you are set for wireless, but overall IMO wireless just results in more problems than it is worth for online multiplay. I tried wireless and I have a really good router but it sucked and now my PC,XB360&PS3 are wired.

checked pawn shop and they have one for $250... eh. a little high. really wish i didn't sell my Hdd :( now i can't go on live at all.

Are you sure about the wifi and multiplayer? if i go wifi i can have my system in my living room or bedroom instead of hooked to my pc monitor at the family computer. I really like to lay in bed or lounge on the sofa while playing LOL.

It really depends.

For me when I played wireless and was on a game like Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 and playing on a good server, it didn't catch much lag until about 12 people or more were playing then you'd start seeing some lag issues like teleporting, etc. With wired, it's pretty much no lag(or no noticeable lag) until about over 12 people, then it's still not bad and you'll almost never notice any major lag issues like teleporting etc(on a good server you probably won't notice any lag at all, even with the maximum of 16 people.)

On Street Fighter 4 running wireless, about 70-80% of the time I wouldn't have any noticeable lag during fights. Running wired I think I've had only one person lag me and it was probably intentional it was so bad, then I got a disconnect % which was some bs. I've even played against Japanese players and showed a one bar connection and really couldn't tell the different than playing someone with a good connection.

Overall though, wired is better. it's much better playing a game such as Street Fighter 4 and having great connection almost all of the time rather than playing it and having a good connection only some of the time. Because it's not only your connection, but if another person has a crappy connection already and your connection is wireless, then it'll most likely not be a very good match.

Live is better.

live also costs like 9$ a month

live also costs like 9$ a month

Maybe on Neptune...

The fact of the matter is this: you get what you pay for. Live is $50, the Wi-Fi adapter is $100. They're expensive in comparison to the free stuff you get on the PS3. They're also better (surprise!).

Grab a $20 HD off of eBay, get a sub to live for ~$40 (Amazon has deals sometimes, eBay has deals a lot too), and get the Wi-Fi adapter from eBay for around $60 or $77 new from Amazon. That's about $130.

You say the PS3 is $250? If you sell your 360, you're max gonna get $120 or $130 (on eBay), less at Gamestop, more if you can sell it to an unsuspecting friend/enemy etc. Point is, it's gonna cost you the same to switch to a PS3 that it will to get your 360 up and running.

It really comes down to what games you want to play and if Blu-Ray is a feature you want. Blu-Ray is great. Crisp audio, crisp picture. The discs are also expensive. Probably 1.5 - 1.7x what you pay for a standard DVD, especially upon release. DVDs also drop in value faster. That being said, Planet Earth in Blu-Ray is amazing, and you can't watch it on your 360...on the other hand, I love my 360's media extender/streaming capabilities. I'd honestly buy one for $200 if it didn't play games; the media capabilities in that regard are fantastic and indispensable for me.

The PS3 has an amazing lineup this fall and beyond, particularly of single player games. Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, God of War 3...the list goes on. Uncharted and Ratchet have online multiplayer, but that's not really the main draw.

The 360 has Halo 3: ODST, some sweet stuff on XBLA like Shadow Complex, Mass Effect 2...and, in my opinion, a slightly more robust back catalogue of exclusive games.

Plus, all the multiplatform games you could want etc. There isn't a ton of exclusive stuff this fall for 360 beyond Halo 3: ODST, but if you're a Halo fan, that's big (I'm excited...heh). On the other hand, I'd love to have a PS3 to play a lot of that stuff, but I won't buy one with backwards compatibility.

Basically, your cost to get a "full" featured unit will be approximately the same...just go with the one with the games you want to play.

^^^^ i was thinking about exclusives, but... if you have a pc, bingo... you have all the xbox exclusives...

the fact is, everyones 360 is like your grandpa... you love it so much but you know that times got to catch up to it... no matter how many times your 360 gets fixed, sooner or later its going to die...

why not trade grandpa in for a sexy blu ray player while you can?

starting to get cold feat LOL. checked walmart and they have 60gb/3 month gold card/headhone mic bundle for $80. not bad really. but yeah as far exclusives, mgs4 and project trico(ico 3) but with mg risng maybe i can skip on mgs4.unless it's just a side story. but man trico looks amazing. it really is a system seller imo. then again 360 has fable 3, splenter cell conviction. other than that every thing i want is multi.

haven't used live since before the vitual mii's update..hehe.it's been a while. how is the live 1080p movie selection these days? how do 1080p live movies compare to bluray movies?

anyway the main selling poin for ps3 for me is trico and blu rays movies. every visit to the video store i am greeted with growing realestate of bluray.

but you can play it on hd-dvd, and for half the price!

just fyi jonnny, hd-dvds are the deal of the decade. no new releases but they're usually much cheaper than even dvds.

I think the best thing you should do is hold out for the PS3 slim to launch in a few weeks. For $299 you're getting built in Wifi, 120GB HDD, a Blu ray player, 2 USB ports, and HDMI ready out of the box. Go to Gamestop or where ever and trade your 360 in towards the slim PS3, you'll probably get at least $100 trade in value. You better get rid of your 360 while it's still functioning properly as well. Like you said it's gonna cost you $200 any way for a Wifi adapter and HDD, might as well put that $200 towards a system that's actually reliable, has great features for the $$, and has the best games coming out for it in the near future (and already has as good of a software lineup as the 360, if not better).

The other thing you should consider is that buying used systems can be sketchy. You don't know what retard owned the thing before and even if it looks clean, that doesn't mean that somebody wasn't running it 24/7. Also you might be getting some shitty refurb, especially if you're looking at getting it from Gamestop. Like I said before, I think the PS3 slim is the best way to go.

almost traded in my 360 today bu could not bring myself to it. I liek the 360 user interface. very colroful with lot's of graphic tabs. it's just fun to brows around on live, downloading demos, watching trailers, chattign with friends and ofcourse now playing with your vitual avatar.

the main thing holdign me back freom a ps3 is ui/psn. from pics i've seen on the web it just dosen't look as fun and bright as live. it looks so dark and text heavy... LOL is the ps3 ui the dos OS of the current gen consoles? hahaha. anyway below is my list of my biggest pro's of the two systems. am i missing something?

xbox 360
-live/live arcade
-project netal
-fable 3
-rare games including next banjo
-splinter cell conviction

ps3
-mgs4(still haven't played)
-little big planet
-last guardian (ico 3)
-web browser
-blu ray
-built in wifi

sorry if i'm beating a dead horse here. can't help it i'm libra. we are very indecisive people lol.

still can't decide. but like i said i will be going though a surgery very soon and i'll be stuck in the house for about 3-4 weeks. i wana be set up with some games/movies etc. so i need to makeup my mind here.

for ps3 really min thing i liek is mgs4, little big planet and last guardian. of course likei said the blu ray player is nice too, tho it will will be hooked to a 720/1080i tv. but i have to admit blu ray dose inject new excitement into buying a movie again. I haven't bought a dvd movie in years! and sure we got 300, dark knight etc. but i want "lost in translation" blu ray! gimme gimme!! haha

now for 360, the main thing i love about it is Live/arcade. not a halo fan. i have to admit there anen't many 360 exclusives that just totally grab me. so for 360 it's got to be live and project netal. everything else that grabs me is duel platform

how dose the new ps3 firmware 3.0 update fare>? sure live is still king but dose firmware 3 ateast approach the latest live update??
