PS2 repair 101 question

I have 4 PS2 fat systems, with the following ailments:

2x PS1 games work, PS2 games don't load, DVDs don't load
1x PS1 games don't load, PS2 games work, DVDs work
1x PS1 games don't load, PS2 games don't load, DVDs don't load (always reads "no data"

All of them are model 3001. Any suggestions on how to mix and match parts to get a working console or two out of this? Or are the lasers all dead or dying? Thought it was funny that some of them load PS1 games fine, and others load PS2 and DVDs fine, but none of them work 100%.

Tweaking the pot usually does the trick.

Try and find standard values for each type of lens and pots. Adjust them as close as possible to those values. Verify using a multimeter.

all you really have to do is clean the actual lens. you don't need to tweek the pot. it you tweek the pot you will probably kill the drive quicker.

There is always that possibility, but that is why one should never go beyond the established threshold for the potentiometer.

I've tried cleaning lens...and though many times it has worked flawlessly, there have been times that it simply did not work. But when I tweaked the pot to the "established" value (nothing higher than that, just very close), it works.

It's risky, but I rather do this method before actually buying a new lens.

before you tweek the pot you should adjust the angle of the lasers(it is those tiny white gears at the back but you should mark them first just in case it does not work so you can turn it back to where it started).

are you cleaning both lenses? there is a top that people usually clean and there is a bottom that a lot of people miss. don't know why they don't know this. watch these videos to se what i am talking about.

small update - went through the tutorial and was able to get two of the systems working! Thanks again for the link, was very handy. Next question, where is a good place in the US to get a new PS2 fat laser at a decent price? Hoping to get the next two working as well :)

if cleaning the len did not work on the other 2 then you might have to adjust the white gears at the back of the drive. the whit gears adjust the angle the laser points at. it is wise to mark the gears before you start play with them. i think this should solve the problem. i had the same problem with some ps2's i found for free8-).
