What's this? A MAME Club post actually made on Monday morning? Yeah, I know...I just got lucky I guess.

Anyway, this week we have a sequel to one of the most classic side-scrolling hack and slash games in video game history. This week we are playing Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder that's right...the revenge of Death's accountant! Wait, what? Oh, not that kind of adder...my bad.

Now for the "official" part of the post

Club Rules

01. You do not need to sign up for the club. If you want to participate, simply download the game of the week and post about it!

02. At the end of the week, I will randomly select a game from a list of nominations.

03. The current MAME Club Pick of the Week can be found every Monday stickied at the top of the Arcade Alley.

One thing that always worries me about sequels is that they always feel the need to add something to a game. Whether it is a new attack style, or different modes, or the latest in graphical wows. And it really ruins the magic that made the original a classic. Of course, there is always the "why did they bother, this doesn't change anything" side as well. I wonder if this sequel adds in unnecessary bells and whistles? Or is it too much like the original?

If you need the ROMs... please search out our sources:

Flack will be hosting at http://www.robohara.com/mameclub/

and 2DSkillz will have the games ROMs at http://www.retrogoggles.com/

Please note: there are three different ROM variations for this game...the main ROM is the "world" ROM, there are Japan and US ROMs out there, if you get bored and want to see if there are differences.

Previous MMMC games: Jump Coaster, Rampart, Jungler, Ninja Emaki, Port Man, Psycho Soldier, Metamoqester, Gunbarich, Sengoku (series), Snacks'n Jackson, Metro-Cross, Moon Shuttle, The Real Ghostbusters, Moonwalker, Black Widow, Kid Niki, Joust 2, Super Contra, Shoot-Out, Raiden.

Have fun!

Has anybody here ever played the sequel to this game? "Revenge Of Black Adder"?

I reviewed this along time ago and gave it low scores.

I played it again a year later and will fully admit I was wrong. I don't know what I was thinking or what I saw, but this is a phenomenal beat-em-up. Not huge on the new characters, but the game literally feels huge, with massive sprites, epic levels, great magic, and wonderful mechanics. MAME doesn't play it 100% correctly (the scaling sections are glitchy), but it is still playable in all its glory.

I played this a little. Seems the same as when I tried it out years ago. Digging that the Rambo Chopper Fall Yell is still in. Other than that, it's pretty crazy stuff! Seeing the centaur girl get knocked down reminds me of Conan movies :(

I was able to give it a fair run this morning. Pretty fun little game, seems kinda standard as far as side-scrolling hack n slash games go. I do like the super attack animations...giant skulls = A in my book.

There sure aren't many comments on this game- did some not like it?

Just got done completing this a few minutes ago. I think the game is pretty well balanced, and if you're an experienced player you may be able to play through it on only a few credits. It doesn't feel like it's a real quarter muncher, like some beat 'em ups.

I played through with all the characters, and I felt like "Trix" (the little guy) had the quickest attacks of all of the characters- so I found myself using him through most of the game. His magic attack would probably be the most useful of all, because it gives you food to replenish your health. The other attacks didn't seem to take much power away from the bosses, so I just found it easier to use regular melee attacks- another reason why I liked Trix. My least favorite character to be the Centaur chick, because she seemed slow, easy to hit, and her attacks weren't very powerful.

Visually, the game is pretty to look at and very colorful. Despite it being a larger ROM, the game plays fine on my old P4 with 512 RAM, even if the sound does seem to skip a bit.

While Golden Axe 2 on the Genesis and this game are entirely different, I still found I liked the arcade version of GA better. I played through a little of GA2 on the Genesis the other day, and found it a little blah.

I'd hope that even if people don't like games, they would still comment. Maybe just an off week. Hopefully it'll improve a bit next week.
