Hi folks, quick question, and apologies if this has been covered and I'm just failing at search. Can anyone point me to a list of theatrical movies that were released on CD-i during the CD-i's life span? I was in a Goodwill over the weekend that had about a dozen, most of the titles escape me now but I know one was Wayne's World. Also, are they worth anything to collectors? I didn't pick them up, money's a little tight right now, but I imagine they'll still be there if I go back.

Wiki: Shortly before the advent of White Book VCD, Philips started releasing movies in the Green Book CD-i format. While these used a similar format (MPEG-1), due to minor differences between the standards these discs are not compatible with VCD players. Philips' CD-i players with the Full Motion Video MPEG-1 decoder cartridge would play both formats. Only a few CD-i DV titles were released before the company switched to proper VCD format for publishing movies.

Well, format similarities/differences aside, I think these were specifically for CD-i players, since they had "Digital Video Cartridge Required" on the sleeves.

Save your money, they aren't worth more than a buck or two if they are mint/complete.

Save your money, they aren't worth more than a buck or two if they are mint/complete. I agree - I have a number of these of the CD-i movie releases and they are all pretty common. Don't invest heavily at all.

Yeah I've never seen these go for more than like a dollar or two.

If The Dirty Dozen was on CD-i, I'd buy THAT for a dollar!

The main reason I would be shy against buying movies on CD-i (unless they were awesome ones, I should have a look) is that they will be sub-LD and sub-DVD quality. Meh. Do any of them have DVD-like extras?

I have Silence of the Lambs VCD enhanced for CDi. The CDi VCD movies have just special features and menus similar to DVD's. I believe the CDi will play all VCDs when a digital video cartridge is installed. CDi VCD's play as normal VCD's on other media players that have VCD playing capabilities.

Why not just buy it on DVD? You can get the Robocop trilogy in one package for like $15 or less nowadays. Other than owning a disc or two for the novelty value, there really is no good reason for buying CD-i or VCD format movies.

Indeed. Most are poor quality (VHS at best, though sometimes worse), and are on multiple discs. Plus, you're limited to playing them on the CD-i unless you happen to have some other VCD player sitting around (some DVD players might support VCD, as the format was popular in Asia, but most have probably dropped that by now).
Then again, I have a fairly decent Laserdisc collection, so don't listen to me... :roll:

Do you mean CDV or VCD? CDi can only play VCD. CDV is a LaserDisc based 5 inch gold colored disc format.

While I agree with many that is not worth picking up, having some choice 80s and 90s Cdi movies to go with the system is great.

I only own 2 cd-i movies, hunt for red october and patriot games. I always thought it would be cool to have a badass cd-i movie collection, but then again, I am a sucker for dead formats (I also own some hd-dvd movies and if i knew where to get it for super cheap, i would also own a hefty betamax collection)

I collect dead video formats, but other than having the players and some software examples of each format, I can't imagine actually building a huge collection of the software. It just doesn't make any sense. It's not like video games where if you own the original on a dead system, you have the original, truest version of the game. For video, everything was originally released on film for the most part and home video versions are just mediocre quality imitations.
