Is there any reason to use a Sega CD model 2 over a model 1? Right now I'm using my Model 1 Genny with a Model 1 CD, but I also have a model 2 Genny that I can use with my Model 2 CD. I want to use the combination that gives me the maximum amount of compatibility. After a few tests the only advantage I saw to the model 2 CD is that it was quieter and easier to change CD's. I'm inclined to stay with the model 1 because I think it looks better.

I am not aware of any compatibility differences. I prefer the Model 2 because it has fewer mechanical problems than the Model 1. I say that based on my own experiences and from reading about the various issues regarding the door mechanism in the Model 1s. Things do still happen to the Model 2, just not as many.
Also, a Model 2 CD connected to the Model 2 Genesis easily allows stereo sound. To get stereo sound from a Model 1 setup, you have to take it out of the headphone jack.
I also like the intro music of the Model 2 better.

I've heard that some older games crash on the model 2. I believe Lunar: SS and Dark Wizard were both mentioned.

I don’t know about the compatibility I think they are all about the same compatibility with official Sega games (Lunar: SS played fine for me on my model 2) but I do see a big difference in load times from my model 2 to my CDX. (I don’t have a model 1 or x’eye)The CDX seems to load at about ½ the time the model 2 takes.
I agree with Orion on the stereo I dont like the look of the model 1 with a wire coming out the front of the system (I unplug controllers when a system is off for this reason)

I could never get Mortal Kombat CD to work on the model 1.

There are some compatibility differences between the two versions. I can't find a FAQ containing games with problems on a specific SEGA CD, but I can only find a quote giving some insight on the SEGA CDX FAQ on Gamefaqs. Basically, YMMV with playing SEGA CD games on different versions of the SEGA CD. Someone may have trouble getting a game to work on one model while another can get it to work on that model.
As stated earlier, the SEGA CD1 also has some mechanical problems that occur quite frequently among SEGA CD model 1s whilst the SEGA CD model 2 seems to be lacking in this department.

My model 1 doesn't power on anymore while my model 2 still works perfectly.
Also, the 32x looks better sitting on a model 2 Genesis/CD combo rather than on a model 1 combo.

The only Sega CD game I've ever run across that had compatibility issues was Jurrasic Park, it won't work on a CDX. I've never had a problem with either Lunar or Dark Wizard on any model 2 system I've used.

See I think just the opposite. I like how the model 1 combo is all nice and compact rather than spread out. It saves on space and looks... beefy.

I played through both the first Lunar and Dark Wizard on my model 2, and never had any problems with either of them. The only game I ever had a problem with was The Mansion of Hidden Souls, and I think that was because I left it lying on my floor and managed to scuff the disc up. Actually, all of my Sega CD games from that era (with the exception of Lunar 2) are scuffed and dysfunctional now because I was an idiot as a kid. I left my cartridges lying on the floor all of the time, so I guess I just assumed I could do the same thing with my CDs. Now I want to go back and kick myself. I have this terrible urge to play through Vay again, and I just know that if I stop by my dad's house to pick up my old Sega CD I'll find the disc lying in a drawer somewhere, completely destroyed.
Actually, can anyone answer a question for me? Do Sega CD discs still work after being resurfaced? I'm thinking of taking all of my old games to the local game shop and having it done, but I don't want to break them even more.

I've had one or two resurfaced and they worked fine but they where only lite scratches that were making audio tracks skips.

Certain printings of the MK CD will not work with the model 1. Some sort of bug in the programming while working under the model 1 bios.
Also AFAIK, CD-R's are read more consistantly with a model 2.

You could have the most scuffed up CDs that wont read and a professional CD cleaner (like those seen in video game stores) can clean them up so well that they'll play with little to no problems.

I can vouch for that. I used to have a whole spindle of Japanese Mega-CD games(With modded region codes) and they all worked great on my model 2.
Just so you know, Night Striker kicks major ass on the Sega CD!
Don't get me started on the mechanical problems of the Model 1:
My aunt had one at launch and the problems added up soon after:
-Non opening CD Door
-Power Supply blown(not the plug, the internal one that processes the power)
-Stereo from the front
-Connection problems
-CD laser won't read the disc
-CD laser very sensitive(if there is even a minor surface scratch, the disc will not be read. We learned that lesson from her Hot in the Shade CD)
Oh BOY!
