They're going the Sony route, which is to say they're being stupid. Tout a machine's HD capability and then make the consumer buy MORE to get that experience?

It seemed to work fine when they included the component cables, since they had the component video AND the standard AV.

It boggles the mind, really. Kinda take some of the wind out of their sail, too.

Funny, every time I discuss a console's HD capabilities on a message board it's immediately followed by a string of responses from users who claim that they'll never upgrade from their standard definition 19 inch tube TV sets and that they don't need HD extras.

I'm sure those folk won't be complaining about the lack of the HD cables.

Was there ever a PS3 bundle that included component or HDMI cables?

Yeah you would think that by now Sony & Microsoft would just pack in an HDMI cable but, I guess it's more money for them to make you buy it on it's own. I don't think Sony ever packaged a PS3 bundle with an HDMI cable, friends of mine have bought launch units, recent bundles and even the Metal Gear release and non ever came with an HDMI only the standard Playstation AV cable.

They also removed the games that come with the Elite as well. Can't really say you're dropping the Elite bundle price when it doesn't come with anything major originally included in the bundle.

I dunno, they gave away the cables for the first 4 years of the console's lifespan. I can't really complain that now when they need to cut the price, they drop the component cables.

Remember, the first million units came with a free remote control too... I don't really hear people complaining about that.

Is it still going to have the composite/component hybrid cable then, the one with the switch? I'm thinking about picking one of these up...

While it sucks you need to buy your own HDMI cable, they only cost $5 so it's not that big of a deal.

Looks like no according to Gamestop(who has the new listing with the same price for some reason.)

They cost $5 if you're a tech savvy internet user.

Every other standard electronics outlet (and mid-range department stores like Target, etc.) are STILL price gouging on HDMI cables.

The lowest price you'll find one for at a legit retail outlet is $20, with high end prices still cracking $50.

Unless you want the Super Deluxe Monster High Def True HD 1080p HDMI Gold Plated 1.3b 3" cable that's guaranteed to make eyes orgasm in a flurry of color and visual stimulation!

Those will cost $100

To be fair, this isn't exactly "new". The 360 Arcade never came with component cables. Just plain old composites.

HDMI cables are $0.02 on Amazon. Not exactly the end of the world.

This really isn't that big of a deal. I don't know why people keep bringing it up? If you want HDMI cables, you can get generic ones for less than $25, and if you want to get the higher end cables from Sony and Monster, go to Ebay or Amazon and get them for dirt cheap in some cases. I got my Monster HDMI cable for around $35 on Amazon a few years ago, the same ones were $100 at "Best Buy".

I got my hdmi cable at Target for $10. I also see them at Goodwill and another local game store for $10 each. Maybe I should buy them all up and start making a killing. Actually, I'm pretty sure they can be found in every state for $20 or less at atleast one or two retail stores.

I guess they're just trying to make a buck on component cables while they still can.
Honestly, I'm impressed that sony and ms even bothered to put a standard video port on their machines to begin with. There's no reason HDMI couldn't be integrated into a proprietary port.

They have to, it's defined by the HDMI specifications they have to follow to utilize the technology, unlike something like composite or component that anyone can utilize how they see fit.
