Maybe you have a newer model PS2 and third party cards. They will block the use of third-party PS1 cards.

On my PS2, my most used PSX card is in the second slot. For some reason, whenever I switch out that card for any other card, it won't detect it until retrying it a few times. But when I put the one that's usually there in, it detects it no problem. All my cards are also official.
Maybe the PS2 remembers?

it is a slim 70001 ps2. i have had a little trouble with ps2 cards but got them to work by moving a little. think the pins are getting bent maybe? still don't explain why only some of the cards work. don't know if these are official.
