Does this need a specific memory card or does it work with any memory card?

Any memory card should work.
I purchased mine second hand through my then employer, GS. The copy I acquired had a memory card that was half red/half blue for Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire but I'm unaware if there was any pre-loaded save information loaded onto the card by Nintendo. I've never really had the chance to test my copy out as I've never been able to find a CIB copy of Ruby or Sapphire for a decent price and I refuse to pick up a cart only copy since my entire GBA collection is CIB. *_*
My copy came in the standard Gamecube packaging and I always wondered if it included an outer cardboard packaging or not. I assumed it did but a scan of eBay auctions as well as a Google/Yahoo! image search has yet to yield me conclusive evidence to an outer box's existence. I've long assumed that there would be such a thing because I thought I remember seeing it listed on the Nintendo website years ago as coming bundled with a GBA/Gamecube Cable. If anyone ever bought one directly from Nintendo I'd love to know for sure. :lovin:

It did come with an outer box, that housed the GBA/GC link cable, as well as the Pokemon Box software (the red/blue memory card was inside the Pokemon Box case). That special Memory Card was really there for those without the benefit of an empty memory card to use, as Pokemon Box takes 59 blocks of memory.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much this "game" is worth these days. The promo Pokemon are kind of nice...I just put enough in to get my Pay Day Skitty last night. Has pretty decent stats, so I'm looking forward to making this a wealth-generator (with Covet, Pay Day, and whatever else I can put on it).
Indeed, the outer box exists. The other reason it probably comes with its own memory card is that, IIRC, the save cannot be copied or moved (just like Pokemon Colosseum). Helps keep people from cloning that way, I guess (although they can always do it in Emerald).

Cant say I follow what you mean by cloaning. I know what it is and all just dont know how you would do it with this device. Also I didnt know you could get special pokemon with this software.

Cant say I follow what you mean by cloaning. And I don't know what you mean by "cloaning". :p
Presumably if you could copy the save file off the memory card and onto another memory card (using some exotic memory card tool), you could them dump all the Pokemon from each card into your GBA cart and have two copies of all the Pokemon you started with.
