I know the PS3 can do alot but like what? I know it can put Linux on it but what else? List some things below the PS3 can do besides play games, movies, and CDs

To add to my list I have a PTOM (PS magazine) and you can take out your "smaller" HDD and put something bigger in it like...a terabyte

It can cook a meaaaan hamburger......wait it's lost a lot of weight lately. I suppose it can't do that anymore. It can still do these though:

Internet Browser
Remote Play
Home (Not really fun.)
Emulation

I haven't tried it, but I've read about it. I don't know if it's possible on the slim (yet) though.

It can play imports thanks to being region free. But that ties into your "games" part. It can also cure cancer, or so they are trying with folding at home (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding@home).

I thought the xbox was region free also?

No sir. Actually, I heard that they left it up to the developers of each title, so some are and some aren't. But the majority of them are not region free. You can find compatibility list online.

And then you have to play horrible PS2 ports of next gen titles haha.

Seriously I don't want to hijack this thread but the 360 PS3 fanboy battles are getting SOO
old. Go mow some goddamn lawns and get both systems!!

Yeah, I never understood that mentallity, buy one system and defend it from all criticism.

I've got both a 80gig PS3 and the Red Resident Evil 360 system both have their plusses and minuses. I can afford to buy both, but I only bought the 360 because I wanted the latest Ace Combat game, no RRD yet (knock on wood)

Guys, my friend thinks the 360 will cure cancer, but I know the 360 actually causes cancer, and the PS3 gives blowjobs.

In fact, I believe you left the blowjob thing off the first post in the thread.

You could sell it and buy a Wii and have loads of mind-boggling fun...

Or you could just play games with it. Weren't we making arguments with game consoles not really needing to do much besides playing games at one time? Well I know I was when I was arguing about the superiority of the Nintendo Gamecube in the great Fanboy wars of the 6th generation of gaming.

Besides playing games on it, I use mine as the front end for my upstairs media center. Streaming across the network, I watch movies, view pictures and listen to music on mine.

If you have a PSP and you work in a place with WiFi (or, perhaps if you know you'll be vacationing in a hotel that has free WiFi and you don't want to bring a laptop) you can swap out the standard HDD in the PS3, load it up with gigs and gigs of music and movies and then use your PSP in "remote play" to access and play all of those movies & videos. This is helpful if you'd prefer to fill your PSP memory stick with games, not media.

And, you can access the PSN store via PSP remote play, so if you happen to be out & about on a day where a good game comes out on the PSN store that you'd like to be fully downloaded and ready to play when you get home - you can pop on to remote play, access the PSN store make your purchases and start your downloads so they'll be installed and ready to run when you get in.

Because, due to the mass volume of asshattery on the internet nowadays, people cant tell if people are screwing with other people to be jerks or just as a joke.

Because many XB360 fanboys often say things very similar to what you said.

That's only the 60GB model. Sony removed the dick port from all subsequent models as a cost cutting measure.

If you own a PSP, the PS3 also allows you to play any of those ad-hoc only games with anyone else who also owns a PS3. Currently you need to get a Japanese account to download it but it works with almost all PSP games no matter what the region.

The Wiki article hasn't been updated in some time because no more games have been officially announced even though there have been more updates to ad-hoc party.

Because that's the very definition of being a troll.

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional or disciplinary response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." Haven't you heard? The PS3 does everything! Or may eventually... I don't mean to harp on the BC shtick, but damn it's annoying to be toyed with when you actually care about the feature.

I don't care what John Koller was quoted as saying in the press: (specifically) "[Backwards compatibility is] not coming back, so let me put that on the table. But it's all people ever talk about!"

That's the same guy who flatly denied the existence of a new PSP being developed prior to this years E3, so he's been on record with misinformation in the recent past (for the sake of maintaining company secrets for a company that has a history of leaks lately, so I'm not blaming him).

I believe that once Sony fully retires the PS2 that we'll see the return of PS2 BC in some fashion. It may not be stick a game in the disc drive and play feature, but Sony went so far as to patent a new PS2 emulation process ... so we'll see how they implement it in the future. My guess would be selling PS2 games via the PSN store.

As I have said on the record many many times, the way both Sony and Microsoft handled backwards compatibility this generation was misleading and disappointing. I doubt I'll ever buy another console again based on its supposed backwards compatibility features. It's clear to me that neither company really wanted the feature included. I think they did the bare minimum to be able to back up their claims and discontinued supporting it when they found people still enjoyed playing their old games. [/soapbox]

As for the trolling in this thread ... it's really embarrassing and disappointing that we can't have a single conversation on here anymore without people trolling. Nowhere did the OP ask about the 360 or the Wii. I'm all for making a joke or whatever but ... damn, people.

They may say that BC will never come back but I have to agree that once they actually retire the PS2, we will see some kind of solution just for the fact that there are so many SCEA games out there that would likely sell very well as download games (I'm mostly thinking of the GOW series and alot of the RPG's, not to mention some of the better known action/platformers like R&C) the catalog of good games that they have easy access to is so large that they would be crazy not to come up with some way of selling them over the PSN. Does that mean that you can just go pop in a disc that you bought at Gamestop? I dont honestly know but I would be surprised if they could keep people from it unless there is some way that they would include the emulation with the download.

No wonder people have been coming to blows over the 60 gb model. I thought it had something to do with BC.

Back on topic, you can use your PS3 to upscale your dvds. However, I've always wondered if the PS3 can improve PS1 games graphics the way the PS2 can.

I think it just makes it look better in relation to resolution. PS1 is a bit glitchy on the PS3 though.

PS1 on PS3? Yes, you can make them look nice. You can turn on "smoothing" which basically just softens the pixels, and I'm pretty sure you can adjust the screen ratio just like on the PSP.

And as far as being glitchy, while I'm sure there are games that glitch out - I find the PS1 emulation on the PS3 to be much better than the PS2.

i am coming out and saying this is off topic, however what im saying is a negative comment about the 360 and i am a 360 fanboy if you wanna call me that. The backwards compatibility was very misleading on the 360. I was so excited that i could keep all my original xbox games and play them on my 360. While many do work on it, i find that all the ones i really do wanna play usually do not work on the 360, its very upsetting.

Given the recent announcement of GOW1&2 for PS3, I doubt Sony would ever restore BC just to resell their first party PS2 games.
I also think it's for the best, since I'd rather have native 720p instead of upscaling any day of the week.
If Sony gives Ico and SotC the same treatment as GOW, I say good riddance to PS2 BC.

No wonder people have been coming to blows over the 60 gb model. I thought it had something to do with BC.
HA!
Well played.

You all know the song, "Cause 4 out of 1200ish ain't bad..." What? Wait a minute, yes it is. It's an awful ratio! :beaten:

...But it's [PS2 BC] all people ever talk about!

You are not going to get a stronger argument for mid-cycle feature integration. Re-integration actually. :/ Sony has come a long way, but they still like to 'play in their world' at least a little bit still.

Fun things to do with a PS3? How about these!

1 - Play video games on it
2 - Play movies on it
3 - Surf the net on it

Other fun things to do:

1 - Dont create topics that are most likely going to degenerate into fan boy flame wars
2 - Instead of debating about which system is better, play the damned systems that you want and dont make it your damned business to torture people who dont agree with your oppinons.
3 - Dont spend more time debating the merits of one system over another than playing the systems you actually talk about.
