View Full Version : Do you restore the boxes to your loose games?

Let's say you get a loose cartridge or CD set from any store or auction. Do you download/make a label and put the loose game in a media case, or do you just keep it loose?

I like putting old games in cases, so I restore packaging to my games.

I'm a weird guy. I keep all of my games loose except my optical discs. Even if I get a cartridge game complete, I take the cart out and (carefully) put the case/box in the closet. This may change soon though :P

I do have a few lose carts, I do not include those in my collection until they at least have a box. Basically this means one day I might get the game again, but boxed.

I only ever included two games with selfmade boxes in my collection:
Virtual Boy: Insmouse Mansion:

7800 Tank Command (I got a selfmade burned cart, as I was getting fed up seeing that game sell on ebay for $500 or more. So I made my own box, it was easy using a VCS plastic style box (the Aussie ones)):

I don't make my own boxes or inserts, I just wait til I can find "orphans." Or I end up getting the game complete and selling the loose copy.

I had never done this until recently. I had a loose copy of Pikmin, and a couple of loose GBA carts and I wanted to store them with the rest of my games, so I ordered some cases from nintendo and used my friends color laser printer to print DVD and clamshell inserts.
I've also made a few custom clamshell inserts for my GBA flashcarts. Emulator screenshots from the title screens of GBA games fit perfectly on the thin side of the insert at 300dpi. Being able to isolate the title graphics by layer also helps a lot.

I just noticed that I've got a (very badly) selfmade Block Out box:

I never make fake labels or boxes. I keep my loose carts loose until I get their boxes. And I don't buy loose cd/dvd games. I do have a few demos without their official sleeves but those I keep in a generic cd sleeve until I can find the original.

Recently I won 30 empty VCS boxes on ebay, that was nice, now they are waiting to be filled with carts.

I use covers from www.thecoverproject.net and media shelving cases for carts, including some that I have the original box for (such as Castlevania III - Dracula's Curse).

I do the same thing

A pawn shop I go to had a ton of NES games with rental cases. I got a few of them, but next time I'm going to check for more. I'm thinking of loading my games up in any cases I can find.

I prefer to get boxed games whenever possible but i do have a few loose ones that i would love to get boxes for
I have never thought of making my own how do you go about doing that?

Most of the time I just keep loose games loose. Rarely do I buy Optical discs loose as I usually get them in some container. I'm thinking about replacing the newer games' boxes with their actual boxes eventually though.

Carts I usually leave loose. I do have a "home-made" box for the Lion King on SEGA Genesis, but I wasn't the one who made it. It is basically made from an extra Genesis case (that is broken now) and has the Lion King written on a piece of paper stuffed inside of it. I bought it in a lot and it came that way.

I actually have put my NES games in some of there official storage containers (either the sleeves or plastic ones) and I once found a loose Tetris box that is now housing my copy of Tetris. Well I shouldn't say loose, it was housing a copy of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt...

I don't make bootleg boxes/cases for real games, I want all original stuff. I might just keep a loose game in a spare empty case to protect it(Genesis games), but I wouldn't go through the trouble or making a reproduction label for the box.

Cases (Works for mostly everything except NES):

Labels:

Alternate
http://www.cdcovers.cc - These aren't as high quality, but they have a lot of labels.

CD Jewel Cases (this is the best price I've found, if anyone has a better place for bulk jewel cases, let me know):

Jewel case inserts
I usually go to staples, they have the inserts there - 50 pack for 20 bucks.

I usually just leave them loose if they're loose, buy buy boxes if I come across them.

I must be the strange one here. I will buy a loose cart over one with a box anyday.

I think i play my games too much to bother opening boxes and finding homes for them.
My carts alone already take up too much space. I must have about 50+ boxes and manuals sitting in my mother in laws basement waiting for the day that we get down there to pick them up and sell em.

I prefer complete games, but I don't like homemade boxes. So if I'm really interested in a game, I try to track down a complete copy later and sell the loose one.

I put my loose SNES, Genesis & Sega CD games in replacement cases and make labels for them until I can get the original packaging for them.

on a similar note, has anyone thought that they bought complete games, only to a homemade case or manual?

I've always made custom covers for games if I had the desire to do so. Usually based off of the Japanese artwork.

The cover looks how I want it to and nobody could ever complain about it being "fake".

I actually just bought a loose box for one of the Konami Collection games off eBay, which is rare enough for me to do...I'm even less crazy about roll-your-own boxes.

I don't make any sort of homemade cases. I just keep the carts loose, unless I have the box, in which case I take the game out (so I don't risk damaging the box through repeated openings) and stack it with the other carts.

I'm a tad strange, I don't care about boxes, but I do want manuals. With carts i plan to get plastic cases and make my own make-shift labels.

I have a ton of loose GBA games and I want to put them in DS cases and print some nice artwork for them, but I haven't been able to find a place that actually sells empty DS cases here in Denmark, let alone Europe, and the american Nintendo store won't ship to Denmark.
I've tried contacting Bergsala (the Scandinavian Nintendo distributor) but they weren't exactly helpful.

Any thought or advise?

Any thought or advise?Perhaps go in on an order with an American co-conspirator to re-ship them to Danska?

You try looking on Ebay? It may be hard to find any, you may be able to find someone who is selling them. Otherwise contact Nintendo of Europe about it. Or just try and find some cheap shovelware titles to rip from their cases.

I agree here. Ebay would probably be your best bet.

I've made some homemade labels, but have never made homemade boxes before. However, uniformity is always important to me, and I used to make homemade CD and DVD cases when I would burn concert CDs. But game wise, I just never bothered, and I think part of the reason may have been due to having so many games without boxes or manuals...it would just be a mess.

@Gentlegamer: Those boxes look really nice. I especially like the Castlevania 3 box, and personally wish that Nintendo would have used clamshell boxes for their NES releases as opposed to the cardboard. The boxes look like they store well on your shelf too, and that is something that I find very important.

@bunnybum: Maybe we can work something out, maybe not. Check your PM.
