I just downloaded the new 3.0 firmware, haven't played around with it much but it looks cool nonetheless.

I like some features on this one, hate others. It adds an incredibly annoying version of the Playstation Store under the Game menu and when scrolling through your friends it enlarges it so you can only see about six at once(but when sitting on the option above your name they look smaller.) I think they need to fix that and just have the box highlighted, but not increase its size. I don't like the new "What's new thing at the top either," or even the what's new box on the XMB.

The things I do like. The new XMB background is kindof nice, though if you really don't like it or it gets annoying you can turn it off. Your friends list loads up alot faster. Your trophy list loads alot faster.

The PS1/PS2 memory card utility loads fast now. The PS1 virtual memory cards were always pretty fast, but now the PS2 cards load just as fast. No more spinning arrow after clicking on a PS2 card icon. Nice.

hmmm, that never seemed to happen to me when I loaded up a PS2 or PSOne memory card before this update. Still doesnt happen, so I guess its good for people it happened to! :)

I HAVE noticed, however, a few small things with this update:

- I noticed when you stay idle for more than 5 seconds under, lets say the "Video" tab, and you have folders in that category, the names of the folders fade away until you press any button or the d-pad on your controller...

- Another thing I noticed is when you have a lot of music, photos or videos and scroll down fast through your list, a small bar appears on the left to show how far down the list goes..

- As stated above it is indeed slower to access a song or video than it was before. Maybe 1-2 seconds longer, but still a little noticeable...

- One major thing I noticed is you can no longer access your Music folder and play something while on the Internet Browser :( Don't know why it was removed...

Silly questions, but...

I have a Phat PS3 (80GB, last release prior to SLIM)...

1)Will the other option of "Install other OS" for Yellow Dog Linux still appear?

2)Can I install YDL or any compatible OS using firmware 3.0 on my phat 80GB PS3?

3)Are PSOne games still compatible using firmware 3.0? (using original PS discs)

Thanks in advance!

They took 'Install Other OS' out of the Slims... moving to 3.0 won't take that functionality away from a PS3 that already has is. PSOne games are playable from disc on any PS3. All PS3's are PSOne BC.

If you were planning to play Uncharted anytime soon, you might want to wait about upgrading to 3.0.

I'm on the PS3 browser and listening to music from my hard drive right now.

How?!? I used to enter the web browser then press the PS button which takes me to the XMB. I then move over to my folders, choose a folder and a song and when I attempt to play it, it says "Do you wish to close the browser?" which is what it never did!

I have also tried this on a second PS3 I have here and the same situation is occurring with the music....

Weird, I just press the PS button, go over to my Piano Classics folder, press "X" on the song and it plays.

I don't really like it. They shortened the orchestra when you turn on the system, and completely removed the jingle with the Spiderman PS3 logo when you launch PS3 games.

Do it the other way round. Start the music from a music folder, press the PS button and then go to the web browser. It works fine for me that way.

Strange that he would have to do it that way when I can go to the browser before starting music. Does it work for you Frankie? The only thing I've thought of, but probably isn't right, is that I didn't get my album information using the PS3s search thing. I manually put the titles in.

I've actually never done it the other way around and haven't tested it, but I assume if it works one way it works the other.

When I read that music wasn't working for some while using the web browser I tested it by starting a track and then successfully going into/out of the browser ... that was just how my logic worked.

Though, I assume that the music output Khz problem is the culprit in this scenario as it's been pointed to on various boards/blogs as the "fix".

That's exactly what is was. I always had it set at 48khz but, somehow, after the update, it was switched to 44.1khz. I totally forgot about checking that possibility out. Now that I switched it back, it is now back to the way it should have always been :) Also, when I switched it back to 48khz, there is no longer a slight delay when choosing a single audio track. Apparently, when the output is set to 44.1khz, when I chose any specific song and after pressing the button, there would be a small 2 second delay before playing the song. Changed it to 48khz...no more delay. Hmm, I wonder why that is....

One thing I noticed when I updated is that the PS3 no longer autoboots to a game when I turn it on if I already have one in the system; it only autoboots when I insert a disc while it's already on. Did a setting get changed? Is there a way to put it back to the old behaviour?

The only thing I can think of is that under "System Settings" there is an option you can turn on or off called "Disc Auto Start"...but you probably already have that on.

I wouldn't say the XMB itself is faster "maybe a tad" but the internet browser is faster for sure.

The font is of no concern once you get a dynamic theme as they smash any theme before them. This update is all in all a decent step forward, but doesn't include any of the key features I was looking forward to.

I imagine the grey boxes around user names is Sony's way of detouring people from asking for things like better ways to catagorize content, multiple instance XMB music support, faster messaging, faster downloads, video store download limit restructure, psp two account at once play and most of all some sort of ps2 emulation.

There are a few crutches in Sony's network and the console, never the less i'm sure the next update will be the option to turn the box around your name different colors. http://planetsmilies.net/confused-smiley-17429.gif (http://planetsmilies.net)

I hope not. I still remember the change from the long box to the crystal cases for the PSX. I specifically sold all my long box games because, I didn't like them to begin with, and I didn't have too many of them once the switch.

If Sony just changes the logo on the top to have the new PS3 that's fine. But anymore than that, especially case size, is going to pretty much piss me off. They have a great looking case already. Why change what already looks good.

They're just changing the format of the cover, not the actual case. Since the game case is similar to the blu ray's, it would be silly to suddenly change it and stray away from the very format they've been trying to push. Plus plenty of people would be pissed, since I'm sure a lot of us keep their PS3 games next to their Blu-Rays, it would make ones collection look very awkward.

I'm glad nobody on here has cried blasphemy about the cover format changing, since I've seen a lot of people whining about how it drastically changes the cover art for Uncharted 2, when the adjustment was almost unnoticeable to me.

Yeah. Me too. I mean look at this crap. Instead of having the awesome looking PS3 logo on the left. They instead have a big ass ugly as hell border on top(why so large of a border.) The top part is twice the size for only three letters and nearly completely empty the rest of it. Then they also have the tab look to say "only on playstation." Also the PS logo is no longer colored like before. They're changing it to the new look on the PS3 slim, but what about everyone who likes the old Playstation 3 logo? I'm sure there are more people who own an old PS3. Oh yeah, 20 million of them.

I mean that honestly looks really really crappy. Good thing they don't pull some bs like changing the size of the box.

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/9/2009/09/500x_uc2box.jpg

*edit*

Now that I look at it on the black background of DP, the original PS3 box looks slightly longer on all sides. Maybe the pictures aren't the same size? I sure as hell hope this is the case.

I was looking at walmart today and all the fatty systems are gone. I'm sure some stores still have the fats but they do sell fairly fast and with fall holiday approaching it looks like you may have to buy used if you want a fatty.

I don't mind the lack of ps2 BC. but why no linux?!? when sony unveiled the console they seemed so proud of the Linux compatible console "referring to it as the linux super computer.

that slim would make a super sexy linux machine. the only reason i can think of is that they want to shed the multi purpose image of the ps3 and get back to pure gaming image. but ps3's native Os is still linux based anyway. I wonder if tehy will block out the "other os" feature in the fats though future firmware updates.

As far as the slim design....It grows on you. at first it looked too toyish but when you look at it for a while it dose look quite stylish. makes the old fat bastard look big and bulky! LOL. hey atleast it dosen't run a version of windows like some off-white consoles out there :P

It's probably because only about 5 people actually used the OS feature and 2 of those 5 actually cared about it. It's no big deal, at least not right now, I'm sure it'll be tinkered with by the time this generation is over and eve then I doubt much will come from it.

that was mostly krazy kenny spouting those lines. ps3 linux was a gimmick. sure it's cool, but what can you do with it? not much. lightweight tasks like word processing, email, internet, and sd streaming video are about it (and a web server, for what it's worth). at least until someone writes a distro specifically for the cell. between the gimped access to hardware and the nature of the cell, you'd get a much more useful linux box out of a 5yo pentium4 machine.

It's the cost of updating the hypervisor and drivers for Linux. The hardware update means that the old drivers/software will no longer work. Since they were focusing on reducing price with the slim, they've said that they decided it made the most sense to cut costs by not spending time/money on this.

Netflix is not available on the PSN.

PSN on both PSP and PS3 does have it's own "video" section with HD movies and television shows for rental OR download for keeps. The service is growing rapidly with almost every major studio and TV network making new content available on a weekly basis.

You can also use your PS3's robust web browser to watch just about any online streaming video player service in full HD (Youtube, Megavideo, etc.) with the exception of HULU which recently specifically BLOCKED PS3 usage due to the fact that the consortium of television networks that formed HULU intended/intends the service to ONLY be available and used by devices defined as "computers" (Laptops and Desktops).

megasdkirby

I don't know if anyone is interested, but there is a program called PLAYON that lets you view Hulu and other similar services through the PC, as a Media Server.

Would love to see a Linux equivalent, like Media Tomb (?), but I don't remember if I can play HULU on it...I don't think so, since I don't recall that feature.

Netflix is not available on the PSN.

That's not true. --- though yeah Frankie, I know what you mean. It's not on the PSN like it is on the XBL.

http://www.netflix.com/

Sure. The 360 has Netflix integrated into the 360, like how XBL has been whoring itself to everything nowdays. Twitter, Netflix, advertisements, etc. However, Does it matter that Netflix is integrated into the PS3? To me it's a good thing there isn't so much bullcrap filling up space on the XMB that I don't want to be there.

With the PS3, you can just bookmark Netflix if you want it. I'm also fairly certain that the PS3 can stream the videos on Netflix as well, assuming you pay for them. Also literally any other streaming site can be used on the PS3(youtube has alot of series and movies on there now that are legit.)

Anyways. Bookmark Myspace. Tada. PS3 has it. Bookmark Ebay. Bookmark Amazon. It doesn't really matter if it's integrated, almost everything online works on the PS3. However, it works much better if you have a mouse and keyboard, because controlling everything using a controller blows. I unfortunately don't use my mouse and keyboard on my PS3, so I instead use my PC.

Frankie_Says_Relax
09-08-2009, 11:23 PM
Netflix won't allow the PS3 to be used to stream directly on the web browser.

But, yes, Kupomogli and Megasdkirby are right in that you can use your PS3 in conjunction with your PC as a media server and play queued Netflix movies via "PlayOn" software or stream HULU feeds. BUT, you'll need a PC in the equation and PlayOn is a 3rd party software that costs $40.

As far as the on-board PS3 web browser goes, those services won't work.
