This cabinet was left at my house when the last tenants left... they said they were taking it to Goodwill if I didn't want it. It's set up as Ninja Gaiden right now but it appears to have originally been Defender. The framing around the screen is from a Defender machine... and the shape of the cabinet looks exactly like it as well.

Here's a Defender cabinet...

How hard would it be to convert it back into Defender? It looks like all they did on the outside was paint over the side art and change the inlays. The cabinet itself is in pretty good condition but the marquee light needs to be replaced.

The control panel is just a slab of plywood so it won't be very hard.

You should look at the art and boardset to do a Multi-Williams conversion on it.

i'm definitely a novice when it come to this...

when it was left at my house it was my first experience with actually owning an arcade game. the most work i've done with this is plugging it in and turning it on, haha.

I would keep it as is right now, unless you are a die hard Defender fan... now is the time to collect parts, stuff is selling cheap right now!

With the duo sticks you could make it a Robotron 2084 if ya really wanted...

Doesthe third button on there even do anything? It's pretty likely that it was something else before after Defender. Ninja Gaiden is pretty fun though for a few plays through. It's quite different from the NES game. It's also pretty tough so I'd recomend adjusting the difficulty dip switch. If you need help with which one it is, let me know and I'll check my manual. If your wanting to sell it, the board and marquee goes for around $50 on eBay.
