Just picked it up a couple hours ago. I'm so exited. I feel like a 30 yr old kid! i broke down and traded in my 360. I was afraid the dvd drive would start acting up at the gamestop LOL. it works fine you just have to jiggle it a little from time to time. I ended up getting a new ps3 slim for $220 after trade in. not too shabby! that's cheaper than the cheapest used 40 gb they sell. :)
I picked up mgs4 along with the system but i'd like to get another game as well. i'm thinking something online. I want a good ps3 showcase game. so anyway i just now unboxed it and it sure is sexy. looking forward to jumping in and playing around with xmb and all the goodies. I'll wait until tomorrow before playing.
now the bad news...................:( i have a hernia surgey at 7am in the morning. that sooooo SUCKS! i'll let you all know how it goes. i'll be sore for about 3 weeks so i'll have plenty of time to play with my new toy :)

Don't worry, everything will go superb in the operation!
And congrats with the system! It's a great machine, no? I just love my PS3...though I am currently getting pissed off at Dead Space, but in a good way! ^_^
Which model did you get? Slim? 80GB?

congrats..ps3 is an awesome system! i actually have the 3 biggies between the wii, ps3, and xbox 360.. i love the xbox 360 when its not red ringing...i'm only on my 3rd 360 console in 2 years.
anyway, mgs4 is a great game...u should look into killzone 2 if you want a great online game as well as resistance fall of man.

Best wishes on the surgery.
As far as game titles go you definetely picked one of the best you could get, you're in for a treat. Takes the franchise to new heights and online is a blast, for sure a great way to start! You should seriously be set for a WHILE with MGS4. The multiplayer in that game is well balanced, deep and the single player campagn is grade AAA.
As far as showcase titles I recommend Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Flower, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Motorstorm 1 and/or 2, inFamous, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Pain, Killzone 2, Wipeout HD and um.... yeah, just about every exclusive ps3 game is a showcase title.
Though that is a bit of overkill I would say the one game out of all those that is pure art and will be looked at in awe by everyone worth a hill of beans is Flower. To me it's the ultimate showcase title as it's original, artistic and everyone I have showed it to is always impressed.

MGS 4 is one of my all time favorites, good pick.
As for your other title, I would wait a couple of weeks and pick up Uncharted 2. It's going to be one of the prettiest games this generation and have both great single and multiplayer. You can play MGS Online until then =]
If you insist on buying another game now though, from the little I've played, I like Killzone more than I like Resistance.
Tron 2.0

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection:If you don't have a genesis ;)
Little Big Planet
Just to name a few good luck on the surgery man.

congrats. please enjoy! i LOVE the feeling of getting a new console. the glamour, the possibilities, the potential!!!!!
however i am sorry to hear you traded in your 360 for it, at least i was until i read that it is on its way to console death. i have both and i must admit the 360 is a better console for gaming, regardless man, dont let it get to you, the ps3 is still a great system. i hope you have a 1080p tv, you so can start taking advantage of the main reason to get a ps3 (over a 360): BLU-RAY! seriously, its beautiful and fantastic. beats out dvd in ever category. netflix is definitely recommended, however do visit cheapassgamer.com dvd/bluray forums for some sweet deals on movies. also blu-ray.com has a price tracker: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/deals.php?country=usa
enjoy!
as for games, i recommend checking out the AAA ps3 exclusives. i would also recommend AGAINST the genesis collection that was recommended. i played it for a bit and it was just an awful basterdization of some great games; i'd recommend the ps2 collection instead but i dont think the slim is BC. as for BlazBlue, i say go for SFIV instead.
other recommendations: Gran Turismo if youre into driving games and Heavenly Sword if you cant wait for God of War.
pardon me for saying, but i hope you go get a 360 Arcade to replace your dead console. at $200 its pretty cheap and you can get it for less w/ coupon from dell.com. you dont need a HD since you can play demos from ps3. they upgraded the hardware so failure will be minimalistic, and the 360 tends to have superior multiplatform versions (which reminds me, get Batman Arkham Asylum, supposed to be awesome on the ps3!).
again, ENJOY!

Thanks for the warm welcome to the ps3 community :) yeah i just love that feeling of opening up a new console myself. I even smell it. nothing like the smell of fresh console plastic LOL. mmmmmmmm... the new duel shock is nice. I was surprised to see that the duel shock 3 has triggers now.
feels strange visiting the ps3 section of gaming sites hehe... I've onwed a 360 since january 2006. feel like a lost a friend.....but I can always get one again in the future. the driving reason for me getting a ps3 was mgs4,demons souls, last guardian and and blu ray out of the box. everything else I want is multi platform. except for splinter convivtion. i will that for sure.
I'll miss xbox magazine. i really loved that mag. nice silky quality pages nice read form cover to cover.
What are some DP community online fav games? I'd like to play some of you guys.
oh i almost forgot to ask, I may get a 26" 720p lcd soon. will blu ray movies play in 720p? if i'm not mistaken the back of the ps3 box says blu ray only play in 1080p?? I thought they could be played in either 720p/1080i/1080p.

I'm pretty sure they can be played in any of those formats...
When you hook up your PS3 it should automatically switch to its highest resolution and ask if you want to keep it or not. I originally had mine hooked up to a 1080i TV and it played them fine and there was a noticable difference between Bluray and DVD quality.

Oh, maybe it means that you'll need an HDMI cable to get them to run in 1080p?

Uncharted
Siren
Valkyria Chronicles
Wipeout HD
Little Big Planet
Anyways, except for the flood of good looking exclusives that are coming to the PS3, most good games are multiconsole I think.
If you haven't played GTA4 yet, I personally think it's the best in the series with all the advancements they made to it from the others. The game will take quite awhile to finish for story mode and while there are alot of things to get outside of storymode, I'd say go to the online mode. The online mode has so much replay value and alot of people are on it daily(I have a couple people on my friends list who that seems it's the only game they play.) You'll get whatever experience you're interested in on GTA4 online mode in multipllayer, like Deathmatch, Race, a couple co op ones, Team Deathmatch, etc. It's definitely the game to get the most for your money. It's also cheap right now, which you can buy it on Amazon for 27.99.

That's close to what a customer I know was given for his console. $70 for the console, and I think a little bit more for the accessories. He was giving it in after Microsoft "fixed" his RROD problem, but he had had enough, since it was his 4th console screwing up.

Wow some of the posts in this thread wouldn't exactly instill a lot of confidence in someone who is thinking of getting a used 360. I wouldn't buy a used 360 in a million years. As far as a new one goes, maybe down the road if MS can prove they've fixed the thing once and for all.

Glad to hear you dumped your 360 and got a PS3. You'll forget about your 360 pretty quickly I think, and hey you can still get one down the road I'm sure for a cheap price.
Back to the PS3 though, MGS4 is a great choice for your first game. Best game released this console gen. and one of the top 5 games ever in my books. As far as some of the best games the PS3 has to offer, here we go: Uncharted ($30), Gran Turismo 5: Prologue ($30), Infamous, Killzone 2, Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Burnout Paradise ($20), Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, GTA IV ($30-45), Little Big Planet, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Motorstorm ($30), Motorstorm 2: Pacific Rift, Heavenly Sword (wait for a price drop), Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction ($30), etc. Don't forget about great and cheap downloadable games like Wipeout HD, Flower, and a bunch of great PS1 classics. Some of the big upcoming releases: Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Gran Turismo 5, God of War III, Heavy Rain, FFXIII, FFVIV, and MGS: Rising. Oh yeah and God of War 1 & 2 in glorious Blu ray HD this fall *drooles a little* !!
Now when it comes to 720p/1080i/1080p, most games are created to run at 720p, so don't drive yourself crazy worrying about 1080p, especially with the size of TV your're talking about, you'll never notice the difference any way. The PS3 supports 720p/1080i/1080p, if your TV supports 1080p, that's what the Blu ray movie will run at, if your TV doesn't support 1080p, the movie will run at 1080i or 720p, still both great resolutions. Like I said before though on a 26 or 32 inch TV, you'll never notice the difference. Enjoy your PS3!! : )

Good luck with the surgery, bro. Hope everything goes well.
I won't bore you with a long post. I'll just say that Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles are my two favorite PS3 games, and I heartily recommend them. If you do get Uncharted, make sure you download the trophy patch before you get started.

I'd have one right now but thing is if I get one now I'm gonna be mad at Black Friday so I'm waiting another 2 months to see what kind of deals black friday has. I like to go at midnight except I might be going to BB and I'm kinda scarred about that one D:

now that i've had a chance to play around with it. ps3 is reallyquite cool. I really like the Os. navigaing is very smooth and has a nice linux/osx feel to it. I thoguht the 360 has a cool eclipse-like boot up but the ps3 boot up is so awsome. it has that elegant violin sound theme and the silk smoke wave with the pixie dust. LOl so cooool. i just love watching the boot up!
I was surprised how good psn is. I dig it. so many people say how is sucks compared to live but i don't think so at all. i actualy like the psn interface. and the web bowser is fun. i was bed surfing last night and you know what? ....it's acualy pretty cool. not super fast but it's decent.
i put about an 40 minutes into mgs4 and i like what i've seen. jsut made it past drebin's into. it looks and sounds amazing!!! it still retains that classic mgs feel which is nice.
the other game i played is the Siren demo. I love that game. I'm buying the asian version of this game. this game just kills resident evil on every single level. the game play and camera have a sort of shaky hand cam feeling and the graphics and animation are just stunning. this has to be the best survival horror(true survival horror) game on any console this gen.
so overall i'm impressed and happy with my purchase.
btw, my psn id is "narcronomus" add me if your up for some mgo

WHOA DUDE! YOU MUST HAVE A WATERBED! BITCHIN! j/k
Yeah psn is like no different than Xbox Live, i've never seen any difference in connection. It's all a bunch of hoopla. Especially now since all the updates it's nearly identical in features, when it first came out.... not so much.
I'm still serious though, you gotta get Flower as a good showcase title.

Hey man, if you can find the difference between the Asian and UK releases, let me know.
I am still trying to decide which to get, and I keep reading conflicting news: one says the Asian version is better, while others say the UK version is better and has more "stuff" (though they don't actually say what in particular).
I also liked the game alot, and I do know the US version is censored. So I am after the "best" version, but which is it?

everything went well with my surgery beside being really sore. I can't do much at all besides lay around the house in pj's which is okay since i have mgs4 LOL. I'm in the mood for a fps. I think i'll try out the killzone 2 demo tonight.
not to sound like a fanboy but i'm lovin this console but dude the ps3 is 256-bit! JK :) but it's awsome to have scratch resit discs. my used copy of mgs4 has a mirror finish on the bottom. not a single scratch. these discs are as durable as a nes cartridge :) take then out the case, stack them up, use them as drink coasters, throw them on the floor or what ever. these things are idiot proof hehe..
I'm not sure about what version of siren is better. I'm thinking the asian version is petty close to the to the japaense version. i'd get the asian version if i were you.

I picked up a slim today and after a stupendous argument with my mother, returned it after an hour and a half later without ever even opening it. I already have a PS3 and became annoyed at me until I relented.

Heh parents are always like that. My grandpa actually talked me into not trying to collect every game and to just keep ones I actually like. It makes sense to me now because I'll never get to play all the good stuff if the junk is filling up the room and being useless.
I still collect all forms of systems though.
You should have mentioned how much money the PS3 slim would have saved your mom on her electric bill...
