So I turned on the power and got a " needs service" contact us message. Something along those lines anyway. It is an original xbox, and I don't wanna pay to get it fixed. Any advice. Is it generally an easy fix on an xbox? Is the torx size available at Lowe's?

It depends upon what's wrong. What number appears in the top right of the screen? Google that error number and you can diagnose what's wrong.
A standard torx will open an XBox, and inside it is basically a PC, so it is definitely a safe fix if the problem isn't too serious. It's not like opening a PS2 fatty or a GameCube. Good luck!
I have a local pawn shop selling the original xbox for $25. Makes more since to me to just go buy one then to put up with all the headaches...

IIRC, you need a T20 bit to open the case, and either a T10 or T15 and a phillips bit on the motherboard.

Try checking out these repair guides here and see if they'll help:

I just opened up my Xbox yesterday, I'm having eject issues with the dvd drive and its not hard to get in provided you have the right tools. Its definitely ALOT less of a headache than the 360

The number 12 is in the corner. Is it expensive to replace the dvd drive?
