I was playing through some MAME games and came across Master of Weapon by Taito from 1989. Oddly, the game starts you off at date September 11. Even more odd is it involves flying a plane and blowing up skyscrapers. Granted, it's a shooter and that kind of happens, but it's weird, now, that a date of 9/11 is mentioned. Any other pre-September 11 2001 games that mention this date as part of the plot? I know I have seen some others, but didn't write them down and have since forgotten.
Propeller Arena for Dreamcast was an arena type game that involved fyling around and shooting down other peoples airplanes. One of the levels was based around Twin Towers type buildings and was one of the reasons why the game never got released.

Yeah I thought about that, quite an interesting game and quite fun. But it's not exactly what I was thinking, since it didn't mention the date or anything. Army of Two is a recent game that did, but that is post-9/11 so it's not what I'm going for either. The date specific.

Those are actually kind of funny.
Syphon Filter had a variant with a cover featuring the twin towers. The 1 2 P will likely post more about that.

Didn't GTA 3 have some sort of level where you crash a plane into one of the buildings?

I knew Master of Weapon was gonna get mentioned. Yep, that's one of the early entries in my "games with the Twin Towers / 9/11 / shooting buildings" games.
Just a coincidence of course - some shooters mention dates (often of the 20XX variety of course) and as there are only about 365 possibilities to choose from...

Allow me to share 1 non video gaming entry (most who know me knew this was coming). From the 1990 CCG version of the game Illuminati: New World Order...I present the Terrorist Nuke, and Pentagon cards...

I also know that one of the Playstation Spiderman games had a Twin Towers level (I defer to Dangerboy on this topic). And let's face some facts...who hasn't taken a jet or 5000 into those buildings in some version of Microsoft Flight Simulator?

In the game Combatribes, it's set in NY and it makes reference to the Twin Towers and the evil terrorist group is called "Ground Zero" much like the site of the Twin Towers was refered to after the attacks.

You can blow up the WTC in Sonic Wings 2 (Aerofighters 2) for the Neo Geo, and I think it even gives you a power up.

Not quite. There is a variant cover (both disc and game) that has Gabe Logan somewhat surrounded by green gas. We don't know the exact reason, but the whole Anthrax scare was going on at the time and it was pretty much pulled off shelves as it went on sale.
I also know that one of the Playstation Spiderman games had a Twin Towers level (I defer to Dangerboy on this topic).
It's Spiderman 2 Enter Electro. The final boss battle took place on top of the Twin Towers, the level was modified and it became one big building.

I'm almost positive you can see the Twin Towers in MGS2 on PS2. Jackie Chan's game on PSX has them on the cover.

Although I've also heard anthrax might have been the reason, it was supposedly more or less the image of Gabe and Lian holding up guns in front of the American flag(while also dodging wizzing bullets in the process) that got the developers/publishers alittle worked up. But I think they just wanted to distance themselves from the whole 911 thing as best as they could so a cover without the US flag was made.
Theres an import PS1 game called The Firemen that has the twin towers right on the front cover art. I have the game but all my PS1 games are still boxed up and google(and gamefaqs) only provided pics of the second game for the PS1.

The attract mode/menu animation in the PS1 JP import Crazy Climber 2000 features a helicopter barreling toward the WTC like a bit out of hell...and then suddenly flying up, parallel to the towers, in a way that a helicopter frankly couldn't fly without dropping like a rock. There doesn't seem to be an actual game level that corresponds to this - it's just in the animation.
