I searched the forums, and I didn't really see anything related to my issue here.

So my SNES is from 1994. Some games works on it, some don't. I've cleaned some of the games with alcohol, but have not taken them apart. For example, Super Mario Kart works, until you press the L button and then the graphics get really messed up. Super Mario World works until the map screen comes up, which has garbled graphics as well.

So my question is, could it be the system, or the games? Is there a way to clean the SNES without taking it apart?

A white eraser and rubbing alcohol do wonders for cartridge cleaning. If you don't have the nintendo bit, I'd recommend getting one.

Usually, it is dirty games but that's not always the case. Cleaning the system itself is usually tricky unless you actually have a cleaning kit. If you know anyone with an SNES, see if they games work alright in theirs.

Thanks for the video link. I tried it but no luck. I am having a friend change/clean the connectors on my SNES. I just hope it isn't the games. Just out of curiousity, how often do you all come across dirty/non working SNES games?

Given the age of the system and respective games, dirty games are common, but since this isn't a zif slot like the NES, dirty games take quite a bit more before they don't work in my experience.

Still, as a general rule, I clean and polish the contacts of any game I get my hands on. Running out of polish though so I may have to figure out what's in the stuff or find something different.
