Can anyone tell me what's up with this? Did the color just wash off of the top or something? (Is that even possible?) Or do I have some kind of bootleg copy? I cant open up the cart because I don't have the screwdriver to do it.

Looks like a Majesco re release. I bet it says Acclaim under that assembled in Mexico sticker.

Doens't feel like anything's under the sticker, and I'd rather not take it off. I found a screwdriver though

What he said. As you can see on the chip, it says Majesco right on it.

Yeh I realized that, but does that mean anything? Just no label is the only difference?

My copy of Hard Corps is identical to yours with the Assembled in Mexico sticker and Majesco chip.

I have one "Assembled in Mexico" cart, which uses that same normal star bit instead of the security bit most Genesis carts use. When I got it it was nonfunctional, and it still is. The "Licensed by Sega" screen you get because of the Genesis 2 appears, but then the screen just goes black and stays that way. I eventually bought another copy which actually does work, but it's weird... what could have happened to it?
I did open it up once, but I don't know what to look for so I couldn't see anything.
I actually have three other Genesis games which don't work, versus none for NES or SNES (indeed only one for any Nintendo console -- my Mario Bros. Deluxe for GBC cart died after a few years, for no reason I have ever known) -- a Vectorman 2 cart (had to buy a replacement later; screen just goes black, it doesn't even display the 'licensed by Sega' screen), World Heroes (system doesn't recognize it, the Sega CD just boots as if there was no cart in... I have World Heroes 2 for SNES so I don't care that much, but still...), and Syd of Valis (given to me because it was broken, so at least this one I didn't pay for. Like Sonic 3, it displays the warning and then just goes black. Unfortunately this one does have the normal gamebit security screws, so I can't open it as I've never gotten around to buying one of those bits.

spot on thunderkid..
Majesco for sure..
i was browsing around the forum and notice a few cool cleaning tricks that your carts may need.
you will also need those gamebits too. you can google them, but avoid buying the black ones. those black ones are garbage. they are sold cheap for a reason. get the shiny ones if you can manage to find them. if you can't find them then just let me know. i'll tell you a place who has the best ones for a reasonable price.
don't give up on those carts. those games can be saved. :)

It's just a misprint. Majesco was pretty bad with quality control when they reprinted certain Sega titles.

The Majesco Sonic 3 re-release says "Mega Hit Series" on it, though... so they didn't do the same with other re-released games?

re-read what the baby in the sausage wrote and all will become clear
@ HappehLemons: Nice find, thanks for sharing!

I have something similar, I recently got a complete copy of Shadow Dancer that's in really excellent condition(even has all inserts, not just the instructions). The only thing is, everything says Genesis on it except the cartridge says Mega Drive. I really don't think that it was just parted together as I got it in a lot of games that were all in similar condition(I really think they were from one owner as most still had all the inserts). I'm wondering if it's possible that the company used European labels or carts near the end of production, did anybody buy games new and found the cart to be different like that?
