View Full Version : Who's Playing Halo 3: ODST?

I was going to get it tonight but the closest Best Buy(where I preordered it) thats doing a midnight open is an hour away and I have to be at work at 9 am tomorrow morning. So I will be picking this up after work tomorrow.
I've had this preodered for awhile and it's the first game I have preordered since Halo 2. Why? Because I want to play as Sgt Johnson. But judging by how many people have preordered this game I have a feeling that there will be very few people playing as ODST's in firefight mode. Everyone wants to play as Sgt Johnson.
Anyway, who else is picking this up either tonight or tomorrow?

This might be a dumb question, but what is Halo 3 ODST?
ODST = Original Something Soundtrack?

It stands for Old Dumbass Sneaky Trolls. But since someone else had already copyrighted that, it was changed to Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.
Also, remember that there is no such thing as a dumb or stupid question:wink 2:

I went to a midnight opening of Gamestation store here in the UK. Well, I say midnight... I got there at about half past and the shop was empty. They still had lots of copies of the Limited Edition (with controller) left but for £60... nah, no thanks. Maybe if I didn't already have three 360 controllers it would have seemed a better deal. Standard edition was £35, which isn't too bad since it's only a little more expensive than ordering online at Amazon/Play.com, etc.
Anyway, I'm on the second level now and the game seems alright so far. 12P, I'm gonna have to send you a friend request for some Firefight... with both of us playing as Sgt Johnson though. :D

I've waited for Halo 1-3 to drop in price before picking them up and I'll be doing the same with this one.
I wasn't a big fan of Halo 1 or 2 and I only thought 3 was ok so I'm in no rush.

Halo revolutionized the fps!!!! Best fps series evaaaaaar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*edit*
Typing in all caps every letter but the first letters of each word get reduced to lowercase. I edited it to make the rest of them lowercase, but yeah.
This post was also sarcasm. Because Halo was one of the best FPS on the XBOX doesn't make it the best. It does nothing more than make a FPS and do a good job with it. I've seen many that are way better and those sell like crap(Unreal Tournament 3 for example.) Overrated doesn't being to describe Halo 3 ODST.

The skinny...
Halo 3 ODST essentially is a 6-8 hour single/co-op campaign, + 3 new multiplayer maps. That's what's new. You also get the rest of the DLC and regular multiplayer maps from Halo 3 which most of us have had for years.
I've had this pre-ordered for 3-4 months now. I'll be picking up my game/controller combo today. I've got several friends that can't wait for firefight mode. I'm sure we'll be sticking quite a few hours into it. Halo has always been about being a social experience. Those who like to take shots at the Halo games can stay miserable in their lonely existence, pouting and playing games by themselves. Makes no difference to me.
Personally, I love the Halo universe, online is always superb and frustrating (simultaneously), and Bungie is the best in the business.

Believe it or not, there are people out there whose lives don't revolve around playing Halo and don't know/care what something that looks like OST means.

If it was on the PS3 first, you'd be worshiping it right now. While it is not the best FPS out there, it was the next step for console FPSes after games like Goldeneye and Timesplitters.
I've never been able to play FPS games on a console so ODST is a non-issue for me. The way heybtbm describes it, it's more or less an overgrown expansion pack.

You couldn't be further from the truth. Killzone 2 is on the PS3 and I don't worship that game. Infact, I don't even like the game. Other than a few FPS games, I hate the genre in general. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Unreal Tournament 3 are the only ones I do play. UT3 is the best this generation by far.

I don't see anyone here claiming it's the best game ever. In fact, no-one had even mentioned the original Halo until you jumped in to flame-bait the topic. You don't like 360 and you prefer PS3; we get it. Now please let just one topic be about the game instead of some silly console wars fight.
Back on-topic, I'm just about to start playing the game through on co-op. The little I played least night was good fun but will be infinitely better as co-op. Not checked out firefight mode yet, but will do later. :)

Very true. I'm not a huge fan of the series but I respect it. I find the single player to be pretty bland but the multiplayer can be really fun. I'll pick this up in a year or so.

Gameplay wise it IS an expansion, there's no arguing that. Your character is less durable, slower, and weaker than the Chief is in the other Halo games, which means every encounter has to be played a bit more carefully. I uh, may have learned this firsthand. But the story so far is tops, and I'd put it above the other three in terms of telling it. Very nonlinear. The secondary storyline, written by the Ilovebees guys and told in the same format - audio snippets located in payphones - seems pretty fantastic so far, as well.
Also I think it's safe to say Firefight mode is the new timesink for my friends and I. Played it for two hours last night and it felt like nothing!

Sounds good. I played firefight by myself earlier(because none of my friends were on yet) and it's alot of fun but with other players it will indeed be much better. I'll be back on later tonight in firefight mode too.
Only thing new with this one is firefight, and isn't that like horde?
Yes firefight mode is essentially Horde mode from Gears 2, Nazi Zombie mode from Call of Duty: World At War and the entire game of Left 4 Dead. Bungie had this planned for release with Halo 3 but they ran out of time and were unable to add it back then.
Gameplay wise it IS an expansion, there's no arguing that.
Very true. And thats why I was a bit hesitant about dropping $60. But I figured that Halo games have always gave me my moneys worth and I'll most likely be playing this and Halo 3 for the next several years so it's definitely worth it. But I don't blame people who want to wait until the price drops alittle bit.
I am on the second or third level/tier of the campaign and I'm enjoying it alot. You have to take a different approach now that you are moderately underpowered but it's still fun. I played firefight mode alone because nobody else was on yet but tonight I'm going to play it co-op. I don't have any complaints yet but the length of the campaign will probably be my first one.

I'm right there with ya on UT3. I played it on the PC exclusively. Damn, I had some fun times and have fond memories of that game. Great gameplay, killer levels, kickass community created levels (remember the Wind Waker inspired map?), fun vehicles and excellent team game types.

I've been playing it ever since the midnight release at a friend's house. The story imo was more interesting than I thought it would be. Granted I've only played Halo 1-2. I'm not really big on shooters and was kind of bored of the Halo series altogether, but I loved the campaign on co-op and Firefight is dangerously addictive. I may eventually pick up my own copy later down the road.

ODST stands for the name of the squad in the game, the soliders, the team, whatever they are called, I forgot it has been ages since I've played Halo.
I'm thinking about either renting or borrowing this game from a friend, it seems pretty cool.

Going to pick this one up today from Toys R Us. They're having the standard $20 gift card as an incentive, but you also get an ODST figure for free as well, which is just a fun extra. Plus I have a $30 TRU gift card anyway, which will mean I spend $30 and get back the game, the $20 card, and the $10 figure. Sounds like a break even to me!

I bought mine from Amazon yesterday for $46. Shipping out today so hopefully I will have it next week. Included was a $15 coupon good towards my next video game purchase, so that was pretty cool.
Unfortunately I do not believe the maps in ODST can be downloaded and played in Halo 3.

Got mine at TRU today and it's a two disk set, with the second disk being "The Complete Halo 3 Multiplayer Experience". It comes with all 24 maps, including the ones in pervious map packs that were downloadable. If you were like me and never spent the MS points on them, this is just even more of a bonus.
My TRU was out of the game itself, but had 2 of the free figures left - not sure how that math worked out. So I was sent to another store to get the game, was told they had 8 in stock but when I got there they were down to 3 left. Oh, and they were out of the free figure. So I got the game and went back across town where they were able to give me their LAST free figure to complete the set. After all was said and done with my gift cards, the game, figure, and $20 gift card cost me just over $8. Not bad!

First off, it's got Halo 3 right in the title. Out of everyone who has owned a 360, who hasn't played Halo 3. Honestly? Halo STD is a game that is about nothing more than a less durable character than Master Chief with, most likely, all of the gameplay mechanics that make Halo 3, Halo 3. Big fucking whoop.
But yeah. I forgot. Halo redefined the FPS genre. A shitty first party FPS that only received the rating it got because it was the best on the system(and a first party game with a good multiplayer system when Halo 2 came out.) The best FPS on a system of mostly FPS titles that sucked. The first FPS most people have ever experienced other than hearing the words Duke Nukem or Doom thrown around on the internet.
But yeah. 2 million sales of the next FPS in a series which has always been average since the first game. That's not overrated. Not one bit. You're right.
*edit*
And during that previous post of mine, the game already had over a million preorders.

I mostly agreed till you made this statement.
The first game "at the time" was a godsend for me. The campaign from the first game was a masterpiece and the other 2 have been garbage and nowhere near as masterfully paced.
The game has really evolved into mostly nothing but multiplayer and that saddens me. The first Halo "imo" is a masterpiece that will probably never be re-created. To me it was perfect in every way.

Heh, I have the opposite view, sort of. I really, really liked Halo 1, both campaign and multiplayer, but I will be the first to also state that it had flaws in both fields. Overpowered pistol in multiplayer, recycled levels and the Library in campaign. I mean, the story was quite well done, but it could have been done better gameplaywise.
Whereas I actually really liked the story in 2 and 3(though 2 definitely did have pacing issues) and felt the Arbiter was a really interesting character. I liked the added dimension for the Covenant through him. All the Halos did do FPS gaming right on console though, from the controls to the LAN play (so much easier than lugging in all those computers!) to the online matchmaking system.
Nevertheless ODST does have excellent pacing, and they brought back a few Halo 1 gameplay bits for campaign - the pistol, the health packs, the fall damage, etc. - so you may want to at least rent it. Personally I love the Halo series, and find the storyline and universe, the gameplay, and the ease of even playing it to be fantastic. I can't get into stuff like Unreal, the character moves too fast, the mouse and keyboard is weird, storyline isn't as gripping. Just stuff like that. Maybe there are better ones out there, but Bungie's games shouldn't be discounted just because they're popular.

That's akin to saying Super Mario Brothers is the same game as Super Mario Galaxy, because they both have Super Mario right in the title. FAIL...

Microsoft didn't develop Halo, Bungie did. And yes Microsoft did own Bungie but to me that's not a first party game. And it got the rating it got because it was and is a great game, period.
2 million sales of the next FPS in a series which has always been average since the first game.
Love the PS3 and hate the 360 all you want, but the Halo titles are awesome games in campaign and multiplayer and are WAY better than average.
I did pick the game up on launch day and have played the campaign by myself and in co-op online and it is extremely fun and well done IMO.

No. It's akin to Street Fighter 2. You're naming two entirely different games that obviously don't try to say they're nothing more than expansions. Such as Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST.
Other games that could be used. Armored Core(three games under AC1,) Armored Core 2(two games under AC2,) Armored Core 3(two games under AC3,) Armored Core 4(two games under AC4.) Under each series is the exact same gameplay mechanic. No differences to the engine just extra weapons and different missions. I don't know which series Ninebreaker is under, though I do know Nexus and Last Raven use the same engine. They are all expansions, reason why they're all under one identifiable name.
Dynasty Warriors whatever number you wish to mention Extreme. Same game, can be played standalone, or unlocks the entirety of the specific Dynasty Warriors game. Created obviously as an expansion and the main gameplay mechanics are all the same.
The US name of Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. the Lost Levels, also works. Since we already know that the game is really SMB2 though, it really doesn't. But if it was really called Lost Levels, it's obvious it's nothing more than an expansion(and other than the fact that SMB2 was released here as a different game, most likely why Lost Levels acquired its name.)
So yeah. You failed a bit more than I did. If Halo 3 ODST wasn't going to be an expansion of Halo 3, why not just name it Halo ODST. The entire series storyline from 1-3 carries over to the next game anyways so the storyline is intertwined regardless if it's named Halo 3 ODST, Halo ODST, or Halo 4. Halo 3 is added there due to the fact that it most likely carries the gameplay or extremely close to it, with possibly minor differences like a Street Fighter game, regardless of story differences or mission differences.

1) Have you played this game that you claim to know SO much about?
2) Why are you posting juvenile fanboy crap in a thread entitled "Are you picking up ODST?" If you don't like Halo (to each their own) and don't plan on getting it then why even be in this thread with those of us who like good games even if said games are not on the allmighty PS3?

I just quit for the night, having finished the mission where you take out the Navy Intelligence base (ZOMG Spoilarz). So far, so good: it's more Halo, and that's a good thing.
I'm not certain I see the difference between the ODST characters and Master Chief, though: I'm straight up melee killing Brutes and whacking hunters with the same wild abandon that I always have. I'd head you were going to be a bit more fragile this time around... But so far, not so much. I'm not fond of the 'no health bar' on the HUD, and the silenced MP5 thing sucks... But Goddamn, is the campaign well done so far. Worth the retail price for this dude.
Hopefully Reach is as good. Keep 'em coming, Bungie.

The hammer brutes I agree with, but I didn't have any real trouble with the hunters, or at least not any more trouble than I had with them in the first three Halos. I was playing co-op with a friend though: they're easier when you have bait. :)
