I can't believe this isn't posted here yet, but I just read that the price of the US-market Wii is dropping to $199, effective this coming Sunday.

EDIT: If this should have been in Daily Deals..., feel free to move it on over.

The last week plus leaks for Target, WalMart and Best Buy's Sunday (9/27) fliers have been getting pasted all over Kotaku and the like. I honestly didn't give it alot of thought to repost here.

You're right about the thread, it wasn't official at the time, or at least not as official as it is now, with the flyers, etc.
I think the lack of response has to do with the consensus in that thread. Either you had the Wii already and they thus weren't concerned with the price cut, or a simple price cut of that amount still wouldn't be enough to justify the purchase.

$199 is still too much as far as I'm concerned. If they included the Motion Plus add-on and both Wii Sports 'games' I'd be a lot more interested.

I don't think it's being cut in Europe, but I believe Wii Sports Resort is being bundled instead...

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo brought out another edition with these items and an extra wii-mote/nunchuck for 299.

While awesome, it still does not save it from it's current library of games.
Once that improves, the Wii improves.
I like my Wii, but I had to do some...uhh...things to it to make it worthwhile. And even then, I barely play it.

Nintendo could probably package in all of the extra crap they want with the Wii, but they would never get away with charging $299 for it again with the PS3 and 360 Elite at that price now. I also agree that $199 is too much for the Wii by itself, maybe if it came with a decent game or two, it might be worth it? The Wii should be in the price range of the PS2 and the 360 Arcade, a $150 at the most considering all of the useless peripherals they make you buy, also the lackluster game library. It offers nothing more than those systems do except the novelty that is motion-sensing.

I agree with this. The Wii is not worth more than $150, at least for me. $200 once something is done to it (we all know what it is), otherwise no more than $150.

Well I mean for someone looking to get into the casual game market, I think the PS2 would be a much better choice than the Wii. It's half of the price of the Wii, and has upwards of 2000 games to choose from, most of which are $20-40 new, and even less used. The $199 price point is a pretty attractive price for any console, but the Wii has so few good games, so many useless accessories, and next to nothing good coming on the horizon, that for me personally $199 is still too much. Maybe when it's $100, I might consider getting one, but that's a big maybe...

Does the $199 Wii include Wii Sports? I know how Nintendo used to only reduce the price on their Gamecube once they removed the pack in game.

You can use the same argument against the 360 and PS3. Slim version's more reliable than MS's machine and offers more in variety and numbers than Sony's successor. A good chance most games for PS2 will play the same way for PS3 and 360, granted the sacrifice of prettier pictures and downloadable games.

*cough*Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Punch-Out, Fire Emblem, Wario Land, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime Trilogy etc.
Dropping off the big N....Madworld, No More Heroes, Zack&Wiki, Trauma Center, One Piece Unlimited Adventure, HotD: Overkill, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, etc.
next to nothing good coming on the horizon

Maybe I'm brand-deaf but nothing there interests me much, going by names, with the possible exception of RE Darkside (horrid name even for a RE title though). S&P 2 looked crappy last time I saw it; RPGs no thanks, "Boy of his Blob" err, a cut-down Dead Space, a sequel to a game which didn't get much praise in Red Steel 2. That leaves me with mario Galaxy 2, Other M, and Muramasa, all of which could indeed be system sellers. I'll wait and see.

I think it is about time for a price cut, though I think it should have been lowered to 150, maybe even 175. If it had an extra controller and a great game, I would pay 200 for it.

Agreed.
Sure, the Wii is getting a plethora of games, but will those same games cater every audience? What one person may like, the other may not. Some of you already know how I despise the Gran Turismo series, something that many of my friends disown me for. LOL
I see Push_Start's game list, and while some look interesting, I don't care for most in that list. But that is because of my own personal interest.
For me, the Wii is just a mediocre system. It's not bad, but it isn't all that good either.

Twilight Princess is supposedly worse than the GC version(because of the Wiimote controls) and doesn't look any prettier, why bring that title up? It's not exclusive.
The rest of them I think you just looked at top lists of the most favored games on the system. As for good ones coming out? Did you just decide to list every game coming out in the near future? That's what it looks like.
However, I'll agree that there's some on there that I would pick up, or look good, but most of them are either average or I'm not interested in. There are many more games that you could have chosen for that list that don't seem so average, alongside not mentioning nearly every AAA title soon to be released as only a few on that list really catch my attention.

Yeah once you get past the dozen or so great 1st party Nintendo games, the rest is pretty shitty. There's the odd good third party game, but far and few between.
I am not a Wii fanboi by any means, but what you guys are saying about the Wii, I say to myself all the time about the PS3 and 360. I have no idea what games people are buying these systems to play, because I don't see any that interest me.

I have and played all, if not, most of those Wii games I listed, though that's not counting backlog. I can put up pictures if you like. ;)

the same way Dinosaurs Understand Housing.
Of course, the list is coming from a guy who manages the RPG list for the Wii for this forum and frequently visits both Gametrailers and Kotaku for up to date news on future games.

According to your logic, the only systems exempt from this are the Turbo Grafx, Neo Geo, and Neo Geo Pocket Color cause really EVERY system has their own BIG steamy pile of sh!t. Yours and kupo's arguments are no different than some guy arguing Halo, MSG4, and God of War III are the ONLY good things their respected systems have to offer.
Don't forget, kupo. The PS3 started out horrendously in sales, severe lack of exclusives, and hugely steep price tag. Now, it's half the price, units are flying off the shelves, and it's got a strong line up for the fall. If the PS3 can change for the better, so can the Wii.

The PS3 and 360 have a lot more to offer in terms of games than the Wii, both 1st party and multi platform. The Wii and PS3 have been out for the same amount of time, and while it took the PS3 a while to get off the ground, it has a far superior lineup of games than the Wii. The PS3 has had a strong lineup of games for over a year and a half now, I just think the high price that prevented a lot of people from getting the system caused people not to realize this.
The PS3's lineup of games has consistently improved over it's lifetime, while the Wii seems to get 1 or 2 big releases every six months or so. For a system that's almost 3 years old, the Wii's selection of games is pretty lame.

All three systems have great games, all three systems have games that suck. Why can't people just accept that, shut up and play the damn games? Celebrate the games you love, but this "Well my system is far superior because blah blah blah" dick waving is complete garbage.

The PS3 was crap, yes, but even back then it was still better than the Wii, even if all the games it had that were good were multiconsole(haven't played Heavenly Sword, don't know if it's a good exclusive.)
Also, most good 360 exclusives were only exclusive towards the PS3. These same "exclusives" were also on the PS2 or PC. Unfortunately I can't get Dead Rising or Dead or Alive Ultimate for the PS2 or PS3(the only two games other than the Test Drive Unlimited 360 version that I miss the system for.)

Can you still softmod Wii's or did Nintendo patch that up with new hardware? Now that there's finally a price drop, I've been thinking about buying one but they can't be modded, I'll just get a used Wii.

Supposedly there is a runaround to the Twilight Hack...something about not needing Zelda anymore.
If it's true, that would imply the possibility of adding the Homebrew Channel (which is a total necessity, in my opinion).
Don't know much beyond that, unfortunately. :(
