I bought a broken PS3 for cheap, but the drive doesn't work on it. I've opened it up to try and see what is the matter with it but I can't figure out what the problem is.
There is a little plastic piece that blocks the disc from being inserted. I have reset it by hand but once I put it all back together and insert a disc the little plastic piece comes up before the disc is in and won't let the disc get all the way in.
When I had it open I was able to get the gears to all move as long as I removed the motor but when the motor was touching the gears they wouldn't move.
If anyone has any tips or ideas as to how to fix this let me know,
Thanks

If something's broken in the drive I'd say probably the easiest way to fix it would be to buy a replacement disc drive. There are a few sites out there that sell the lasers and the carrier assy but the only place I've seen complete drives was on eBay. Is it possible that you can take pics of the parts in question? that might help to identify the problem

I've tinkered around some more and taken some pictures:

So I think the problem is the motor that is under the metal brace. I have taken it off and all the gears move smoothly but when I put the motor back on they lock up. I can spin the motor with my fingers so I'm not sure if that is the problem.
If anyone has any thoughts I would love some input.
Thanks

Does anyone know if this is even fixable?

Does it only lock up when it's powered up or just assembled? Also, what kind of gear is on the motor shaft? If it's a worm gear(like a screw) you won't be able to spin the other gears by hand.

Hi..
I think you should concern with a hardware expert may be it may help out to solve it..

Can you hear the motor trying to spin? I only asked about the worm drive because that could make it have the apearance of locking up when really it's acting normal. I should mention that I really don't know anything about PS3's, just electronics in general. From what VCR/DVD repair I've done(which this closely resembles) it almost seems like it could be a sensor problem(2 contacts that touch when a piece moves) or other mechcanical problem. Usually a pretty simple fix, but finding it could be quite annoying though.

The motor does try to spin when it's plugged in, but as the disc gets pulled in a piece comes up and blocks the disc from getting pulled all the way in. The piece is, I'm assuming, supposed to be there to prevent another disc being pushed in when there is already one there.

Can you just remove said piece? If it is indeed causing the problem removing it may alleviate the issue

I could just cut it off but I'm not sure if that'll fix the problem because I'm not sure if the gears are working correctly.
