I am keeping in mind that this is a first gen game. since I just recently got a ps3 i'm late to play this game. but it was the first game i bought. I read all the reviews and most magazines/websites gave it a 10. Now, i've played and finished every metal gear solid game including the nes games. (didn't finish the nes games) needless to say my expectations were very high.
the beginning presentation is the best part of the game. the cinematics, animations, introduction to octo camo, the graphics and aI is al petty well done. The introduction to the first boss was very cool. but after that everything heads south.
all the boss fights were repetitive and very easy. i died like once of twice during the boss fights for the entire game. all the bosses had a very simple pattern and it was like fighing the same boss over and over.
act 2 was ok. act 3 was just filler and waste of an act imo. act 4 had cool weather effects but again bsicly an empty base. would have been nice to encounter atleast a few grunt soldiers decked out in snow camo guarding the base. and finally act 5. what a disapointment. so short and so easy. I thought i was going to have to sneak into the core of the ship with grunts guarding and patrolling the corridors. nope. i was disapointed with every act from 2 forward.
it also didn't seem like there were real reasons to use the octocamo, box/barrel etc. on top of that, you can buy ammo/guns any time in the game. that takes away from the combat survival. you never feel like you have to engage in cqc to reserve ammo.
I know some people love the game but I was disapointed with this one. I was far more impressed and surprised when i first played mgs3. isn't the cqc in mgs4 exactly the same moves as in mgs3? I was expecting deep cqc system in mgs4.
i remember playing mgs1/2 and if you were spotted and you were hiding under a tank or table they would bend down and look for you and toss a grenade or shoot at you. never saw anything like that in mgs4. feels like some of the ai was dumbed down a bit.
I'll play it again on hard and maybe it's better on the hardest mode but so far i feel like mgs2/3 were much better games.
