well, I always wanted to get Utena, but that's because i'm a RGU fan.
good luck with Radiant Silvergun, but otherwise the entire KOF series is out there. You can actually play '95 since it's an import saturn and you aren't using a 4-in-1. all the 2d fighters import seem to be top notch, so if you like that genre I wouldn't shy away from it.

Saturn Import Time!
If you're into fighters, Capcom made a bunch for the saturn that are nearly arcade-perfect and MUCH better than their PSX counterparts. The Saturn is also considered the best shooter console (with the possible exception of the PC Engine)

Batsugun (crazy shooter)
Battle Garegga (second-best shooter after RS)
Blast Wind
Bokan To Ippatsu! Doronboo Kanpekiban (Time Bokan) (funky shooter)
Bulk Slash (awesome 3-D Mech/flight game)
Capcom Generations 1
Capcom Generations 2
Capcom Generations 3
Capcom Generations 4
Capcom Generations 5
Cotton 2: Magical Night Dreams
Cotton Boomerang
Darius 2
Dead or Alive (better than PSX game)
Deep Fear (Resident Evil rip-off in English!)

Dungeons and Dragons Collection
Elan Doree’
Elevator Action Returns
Fantasy Zone
Fighters History Dynamite
Fire Prowrestling S 6Men Scramble
Galaxy Force II
Gals Panic SS (Qix with women)
Game Paradise, The (another great shooter)

What, 7800--no Choaniki recommendation? That's just gay.

Where there any great 2D platform games released in Japan that never came over here?

These are all great platform games or platform/shooter hybrids that were never released for the Saturn in the USA...
Assault Suit Leynos 2
Capcom Generations 2
Dracula X: Castlevania (Like the PSX game with more characters)
Dungeons and Dragons Collection
Elevator Action Returns
Keio Yugekitai (Keio Flying Squadron 2 with a lot of platform segments)
Metal Slug
Mizubaku Adventure
Prikura Daisakusen (great isometrical game)
Princess Crown (with RPG elements... best 2D on the Saturn?)
Psychic Killer Assassin Taromaru (way expensive)
Pu-Li-Ru-La Arcade Gears (bizarre... very Japanese)
Silhouette Mirage
Steamgear Mash
Super Tempo
Warriors of Fate II (Tenchi wo Karau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai)
Wonder 3 Arcade Gears (contains an AWESOME platform game)
I thought about including Choaniki, but it's just... too gay. (No offense intended or implied towards homosexuals.)

Of those particular games, which of them are closest to:
Astal
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2
Bug
I love a good platformer.
Oh, also, what cartridge thing should I get to be able to play the import games?

Hmmm... if I remember correctly, these are the most similar to the games you mentioned...
Capcom Generations 2
Keio Yugekitai
Mizubaku Adventure
Pu-Li-Ru-La Arcade Gears
Super Tempo
Wonder 3 Arcade Gears
There are several different choices for convertor carts... the simplest is the KEY-something that is merely a convertor. Others contain memory for game saves, and a few have the 1 and/or 4 megs of RAM (for certain games, mostly Camcom and SNK fighters) built into them... just depends on what you want.

thanx guys you were a great help! I thought saturn was great with just the US stuff now it looks like I have my hands full... yeah Astal is one of my favorite games of all time, its probably the most beautiful 2D platformer ever, clockwork knight 1 + 2 rock too, dont forget 3 dirty dwarves..i thought that was a lot of fun too, and i kinda enjoyed scud as well. Anywho's one more question, I have Gunbird 2 for dreamcast, is that one better than the original or no?
