Has anyone ever heard of Sonic 2 being in a cardboard box? Drexel923 came across this, and we're not sure what kind of re-release it is. I've never heard of such a thing, has anyone else here?

I'll try to get a picture in coming weeks, or maybe he'll post one who knows.

was it one of the mejesco releases that went along with the genesis 3?

OK, what year was that? Want to see when it was actually released in a cardboard box.

Must have been around 1995, so 3 years after it came out originally?

Could this be a Canadian or TecToy release?

I have the cardboard release myself, it is quite rare I had posted a thread here a few years ago and nobody was able to come up with a true history for it. the best we could come up with was some people believe it was an early "sonic 2 day" release, but very little to back that up, 'd be facinated to see some truth to its origin.

here is some old pictures i took with my old uber shitty camera back then:

i can dig it out sometime this week and take better shots if needed.

Could this be a Canadian or TecToy release? It's definitely not a Canadian release. At least, every Sonic 2 I ever saw in Canada was the regular plastic box.

Yeah, a lot of Genny re-releases actually came out around 1997 as it was on its deathbed. Numerous games were put out in cardboard boxes, some with the red stripe on the side and a rating when they previously had none (Battletoads and Road Rash 2 also came out this way as well).
As a matter of fact, I think RR2 just looks odd in a non-EA cartridge, but there it is.

I have one in the box in my collection as well. Its very odd and I cant find any info on it.

My guess would be maybe a later issue of the game once they got rid of the plastic boxes. I know it's been said before, but sometimes whats the most simple is the right awnswer.

My guess is that it's a Majesco re-release akin to Sonic 1.

At least it doesn't say Not For Resale on it :D

I too have this box and I am very interested to see if anything has come up within the last year in a half. We have been discussing this over at cardboard box thread over at SegaAge and I'm amazed to how little is known about this box. Does anybody know the origin of this box?

A year and a half later I never came up with where/when this was released.

Are you sure this was an actual retail box? There is no bar code. It looks like either a shelf display box or a pack-in as there is no way it would have been sold on its own as this was well after every US release game had a UPC bar code on the box.

For what its worth- I remember buying this version in the cardboard box, and Earthworm Jim from a Super K Mart around late 94 early 95...... I specifically bought this Sonic 2 because it was only $14.99 and my pack in copy had been stolen.

Its really not all that uncommon. We're talking about a release of one of the most easy to find games around.

No, the game is not uncommon. But in the 22 years of Genesis game collecting and playing, I have yet to see a cardboard box for Sonic 2 - or even knew it existed until just now.

The only other "black box" game I have personally seen in cardboard is Jeopardy. Really any black box game in cardboard is rare, and I'd like to know the history behind them.

When Sonic 2 was released, the Genesis was at the height of its popularity, so it's possible they temporarily ran out of clamshell cases.

Eh, I wouldn't be so sure on that one. The cardboard variation looks to be unbelievably uncommon, I've never seen one show up on ebay and I've been looking for quite some time.

The Little Mermaid also came out in a cardboard box, thanks to Majesco.

Just wanted to inform everyone on digitpress that I have this cardboard Sonic 2 variant up for auction over on SegaAge.com. Everything is covered in the auction thread but if you have questions about anything let me know.

Could this be a Canadian or TecToy release?

all Tec Toy releases come in plastic cases except for sega cd and 32x titles. and there would be a bright yellow TEC TOY logo all over the package.

let me re-quote myself here. This is the truth. Its just a very rare retail release that was available for a very short time when people were NOT buying copies of Sonic 2......hence the rarity. Id also say but cant confirm, that it was only available at select retailers or even only at Super Kmart, as thats where mine came from and I can clearly recal the rack of Sonic 2s being full compared to the other titles there, cause nobody was buying them.

I'll give you five dollars for it. :)

I actually remember seeing a few of these as a kid. Pretty much ignored them since I had Sonic 2 already. The naivety of a child.
